The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0747946/

While the low quality images we've already seen look less than stellar I have to take into account that Mayes did a fantastic job on the costumes in Apacalypto.

Christopher Reeve was still pretty built, especially for an actor in the late 70's. it wasn't until the 80's that the body builders like Arnold and Sly came around. even still, Reeve was undeniably handsome. Chatwin, on the other hand...not so much.

There are a good few hundred thousand teenage girls who would disagree with you, lol.

uh....no. just because he's an alien doesn't mean he can be puny and still whoop someone's @$$. how would it look if Brandon Routh hadn't put on the weight that he did? it would look ridiculous because he'd be a skinny guy who can do amazing things. how many martial arts movies have you seen where the main character is a scrawny guy that can kick everyone's @$$? exactly....and out of those movies, how many were taken seriously? exactly...

True, I would agree, if it were a film based solely on martial-arts, with no science-fiction twist to the story, and Goku were just a fighting prodigy of the highest order with no alien background, it would be almost impossible for his character to be taken seriously by any audience.

Brandon did get in some bodybuilding, but it couldn’t have been much more than Chatwin is undergoing now. If it were, there wouldn’t have been a musclesuit underneath his costume.

And there most definitely was, heh.

well, for one, Chatwin's not an average sized guy. if he were...i wouldn't be complaining about his build. for two, it doesn't put the focus on the sci fi element unless James Wong makes it that way and i seriously doubt he's going to go into detail to explain how a skinny alien can whoop on a bunch of Earthlings. there's simply no good or legitimate reason why Goku has to look so scrawny.

There’s really not that much to explain. The details of Superman's origins were covered in that quick 5-10 minute monologue by Jor-El. "Even though you have been raised as a human, you are not one of them. You have great powers, only some of which you have yet discovered."

And look on the bright side, while giving him the benefit of the doubt. We haven’t seen him in full outfit or action yet, as he is intended to be seen. Better than wallowing in disappointment that his characterization is going to suck terribly before we even get a trailer. Even if it IS, don't be so quick to suffer, lol.

The one detail that keeps his character's build from looking disproportionate to his abilities(in this first film, anyway), is that Goku's strength doesn't just come from his training and a chiseled physique, it's his Saiyan descendence that makes him stronger than any human could possibly be.

If it weren't for that, his amazing feats would be incredibly disproportionate. Then you'd be right, people would say "how can a skinny guy like that be one of the strongest fighters on Earth?"

i said Reeve was undeniably handsome and Chatwin not so much. that means Chatwin is DENIABLY handsome...and for every teenage girl who would disagree there are probably 5 who would agree with me. he's not exactly heart-throb material the way Leo DiCaprio was when he was 25.

even with a science fiction twist, it will be hard for people to accept this guy as a bona fide hero. yes, with special effects of course ANYONE can look like they can punch through a brick wall with no problem but it's harder for people to accept it if the person doesn't look like they can actually do it.

the muscle suit was no more than half an inch thick and it used only to give the suit definition. since the outer material squeezes muscles, you lose definition...hence the muscle suit. as for Brandon's training, he had at least 5 months to get in shape for Superman and considering his appearance before he was cast, he gained quite a bit of muscle.

the problem with that is that they shouldn't have to rely on the "alien" explanation, alone, for his power. the more you back up your argument the more believable it is. if you only provide ONE reason then it's not as good as TWO reasons. him being an alien would be one reason, him having a decent physique would be TWO reasons. it's like saying "Kratos doesn't NEED to be muscular, he would have his powers regardless of his body because he's the God of War!" i find it ironic that James Wong cast a caucasian actor as Goku as a means to appeal to the Western audience more, but didn't realize that Western audiences also like their heroes to be buff and tough. i'm not saying Goku HAS to be super built or uber muscular, but the least they could've done was given Goku a DECENT body. unfortunately, Chatwin doesn't even have that. my beef isn't that Goku isn't muscular.....it's that Chatwin is so skinny.

You guys are crazy, Goku was skinny when he was a teen.

Well, Kratos’ muscular build is an integral part of his character. He has to look utterly ripped in order to inspire fear and intimidation. Goku is meant to inspire oblivious innocence. He’s the happy-go-lucky kid at heart who inexplicably always manages to beat down the biggest meanest bad guys that nobody else can handle. He’s the perfect image of innocence trapped in the body of Earth’s mightiest warrior. The fact that he doesn’t have the physique of a world-class fighter is a tribute to his character scheme.

Also, let me bring one more thing to light. If this guy, Morihei Ueshiba(the founder of Aikido), were alive today, he could kick the stupid out of Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris, Van Damme, or any of Hollywood's greatest martial-artists in their prime. And he won't do it with a sculpted 10-pack.

Martial-arts are hardly about having a chiseled body. It sure helps to keep your endurance level high, and it’s a common trait among seasoned fighters, but if you haven’t got the technique, you haven’t got anything. There are single-strike techniques in Tai Chi that could kill a 300-pound mountain of muscle when applied by a 110-pound master of the art.

I’m with you 100% that he needs to undergo a physical transformation, in the manner of Tobey Maguire, Thomas Jane, and Ben Foster for the sequel.

If you threw 20-50lbs. of muscle on him now, it wouldn’t give us any opportunity to watch Goku grow stronger, both physically as well as mentally throughout the film series. It should be a journey.

rinse and repeat.

true, but he's not in a semi-fantasy movie being marketed towards the Western audience.

if you threw 10 lbs on Chatwin, he would at least have a DECENT build. if you threw 10 pounds on top of that he'd have a GOOD build. throw 10 more lbs and he'd have a GREAT build. he doesn't have to start off SKINNY to be able to have room for visual growth. as i said, there's no reason for Goku to be as SKINNY as Chatwin is. a regular/average build would've sufficed but Chatwin doesn't have that.

I look quite a bit like Chatwin (muscle wise) and I consider myself average... lol

I think that may be the idea.

what DorkyFresh is trying to say is that..he doesnt think Goku is hot enough

lol

The lighter he starts out, the more amazing his journey will be. It’s the story of a kid from the woods who becomes the strongest fighter in the world, and eventually the universe. It'll be that much further his character has come in his journey.

There are standards, of course. 10 or 20 pounds less, and yeah, Chatwin would be on the verge of looking anorexic. I consider him average, though. To me, DJ Qualls is scrawny.

I think he'll look good with full costume and make-up.

LOL..Dorky fresh wants a steroid using Goku...lol

I agree ...I could see DJ Qualls playing Goku...lmao j/j
