The Official Goku/Justin Chatwin Thread

Was that comment necessary?

I am expressing my opinion on your comment and I feel that this movie does not deserve a sequel nor does it even deserve to make it's bank at the BO though it probably will due to false hopes like Spiderman 3.

I don't know what Goku you refer to because Chatwin isn't neither. Goku clearly looks asian and fits that realm. The whole culture is oriental based and was definately so since the 80s. It only got translated early 90s and was terribly done with all the censorships. I love the asian culture that is expressed through dragon ball (THE MONKEY KING) and such. Chatwin doesn't, never has, and never will look like Goku. He looks puny and pathetic and the costume on him looks rediculous since that fashion style is more based on someone who can distract you with CULTURE and real martial arts skills that you don't care about the hokey pokey designs. At least is they had some serious choreography for the action then maybe chatwin being miscast would be bareable, but it's not. Did you actually like the movie? like seriously???? and how old are you????

Listening to a teacher call a white suburban high-school kid "Goku" was just painful. Not to mention Roshi's " you have to find the Goku in you.."

His acting and portrayal of Goku was just terrible. He wasn't even just bad as Goku, he was just plain bad.

Dragonball, another of my favorite anime series ruined by hollywood.

Am I the only one who doesn't mind the whole Americanization thing? For me, it's like watching Ran or The Wiz. It doesn't destroy the original concept, it just provides an interesting cultural perspective. I'm not saying DBE is on the same level as those, but I think you guys see my point.

I think it might be due to growing up as a mixed kid. I can identify with a few different races and I like seeing stories told from those various points of view. I feel like I learn more about others' cultures and about the original work when they do that. Like "The Departed" helped me understand "Inferal Affairs" a little better. Plus, I was able to look at "The Departed" and say, "This reminds me so much of the Irish-Catholics in my family." I hated "King Lear" up until I watched "Ran."

I just look at the whole Americanization thing as blaxploitation for white people. :)

i do love me some blaxploitation... but no mater what culture this movie may or may not reflect it's quite the stinker.

Well yeah, if it sucks the it sucks. I just don't chalk the suckiness of an adaptation up to the fact it was adapted to reflect a different culture. I think it'll say a lot about us as a people, when we can watch maybe a black Superman and not feel as though our childhoods were raped. I understand people feeling that way. A black Superman isn't even something I'm ready for. But at the same time, we need to get past that kind of artistic segregation.

That's your opinion, but I, on the other hand, wish the film nothing but the best.

It was always going to be hard to find people that actually resembled the characters, and for me, it doesn't matter if Goku is portrayed by an Asian or caucasion, because he's not either, he's a Saiyan, so you can go either way. As I've said already, I haven't seen the movie, and regardless of my age, I'm allowed to enjoy or watch whatever I want, so my age is irrelevant to the discussion.

AAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

this is how gokus pants and boots looked on the set

this is how it looked in the movie

bravooooooooooooo FOX.this is just insane. fans wanted the pants under teh boots and be visible. but nooooooooo goku needs skater pants he needs baggy pants because this is cool right?

so we were complaining that he has those martial arts shoes. but now we seee that he had boots and it looked amazing on the set.

bravooooooooo

That sounds like something Rothman would do Dark. I imagine he said something like "Make Goku look like Goku as much as possible on the set but when action is yelled make him look like Geeko & not Goku". I can imagine Rothman telling the guys something like this on set

Sorry, but boots or not, it still looks stupid. DB doesn't translate well to live action, any actor wearing a wig to imitate Goku's hair or the freaking tail would look ridiculous, etc, etc. They should leave the anime alone instead of doing these idiotic movies.

I think Dragon Ball would have worked if Stephen Chow directed. You can't watch his films and complain about them being ridiculous. That's the whole appeal of them. Apart from the awesome martial arts battles.

Absolutely true.

:csad: All you young kiddies here search for God of Cookery on Youtube, chilax with a few friends and a bowl of popcorn in front of your PC and lose your **** laughing. I wish DBE had been as crazy as that movie, eh, maybe the sequel. I'm an optimist, people.

Agreed. I think a lot of us were against this movie from the beginning.

i was against it from the minute i found out who's going to play goku and saw the first leaked picture

I wasn't till I saw the white piccolo (good thing that wasn't true) and the first trailer.

actually, the behind the scenes footage shows Marsters in peach-colored makeup hanging from a wire...so i'm pretty sure they originally intended for Piccolo not to be green, but then saw the fans complaining and decided to color him green in post-production.

I think they, like you said, originally thought they could get away with a yellow/pale Piccolo, and James kept saying he NEEDS to be green, so they simply reshot his scenes in green make-up, as shown in the rock pic.

I wasn't planning on seeing this movie, but now I almost want to just because I'm sick of so many people opening their critique of it with "ZOMG NOOOO they made goku WHITE HAU DAR THAY! NNOOOOOOO my poor childhood is RAPED!" The movie will almost definitely be crappy, but you instantly lose your credibility if you think one of the movie's biggest problems is the race of the main character.

i assure you that goku being white is the least of the problems this film has and strongly urge you to save those $10...because with that money you vote in favor of crappy films like this and i don't think you want to subject yourself to that just to prove a point. if you have to see it wait until it comes out on dvd then talk a stupid friend into renting it.

I already stole $10 from fox when I downloaded Wolverine, so IMO I've already stuck it to them. This movie is gonna bomb at the box office anyway, since Fox doesn't even want to promote it.

You'll be better off sitting comfortably at home watching the season finale of SCC (thats what I'll be doing at least) instead of cashing $10 for this movie.

All aesthetic complaints aside this movie is bad on its own accord. Even if this was an original film it would suck because of its tattered narrative and it ridiculously "lets touch on this for 4 seconds and move on pacing".

Looks like all recent Fox movies tend to be lacking in the narrative (dialogue and plot) and editing department (probably attributed to Rothman's strategy, which is undermine your audiences by giving them no story or character development and giving them short running times to rack in more cash).

thats the problem. its not only a bad DB movie iMO.

its just a bad movie.
