The Official "I Loved Raimi's Spider-Man' Thread - Part 1 of 99 Luft - - Part 11

I've often said that Spider-man 3 still has the heart to it the other 2 films have. Raimi never went the way of Michael Bay and just gave us non-stop action and CGI. Sam never lost sight that the entire trilogy is about Peter, and to a lesser extent,Harry and MJ as well.
I still love that ending scene in Spidey 3 when, after all they've been through,Peter and MJ embrace and are willing to forgive each other. A very touching moment. Like many have already said,it's just a shame we never found out what might have happened in a part 4,5 or 6.

Absolutely

While not a perfect ending, it is a bookend to the trilogy. Peter moves past his grievance, learns the power of forgiveness, and we can assume MJ and Peter get back together, after reconciliation. It's quite poignant, really.

I agree. For the first time he's not swinging away from MJ at the end. He's staying with her. It's low key but appropriate.

I watched The Evil Dead 3 for the first time a few weeks back. I can really see how Raimi grew as a director from the first 2 - while it's unadulterated cheese (and good cheese I might add!), it marks his first steps into bigger action sequences, bigger sets with dozens of extras and busier scenes. I could really see a lot of Spidey in it, and vice versa :)

You mean Army of Darkness?

The heart in Spider-Man 3 is what more or less salvages the movie for me. Spider-Man 3 is flawed and not even in the same league as Spider-Man 1 and 2, but I still found myself caring about the characters and the things that were happening to them.

I've said this before, but one of my favorite moments in Spider-Man 3 is when Peter and Aunt May have their talk about the responsibility of marriage. Aunt May's story about when Uncle Ben proposed to her will always punch me in the feels.

While we're on the subject of Aunt May, I also love the scene after Peter thinks he killed Flint Marko, and he initially tells Aunt May that Spider-Man killed him. Rosemary Harris was just so damn good in these movies. Love her. :)

The end was made even more fitting by the franchise discontinuing. The whole story began with Peter pining after Mary Jane, and it ended with his love for her.

Rosemary Harris is one of many great casting choices in Raimi's series. Along with Cliff Robertson, J.K. Simmons, Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe and James Franco.

It's unfortunate the casting wasn't as great for the two main characters.

The casting for the two main characters was top notch. Tobey was terrific. As was Kirsten.

To each their own (obviously). I personally feel Tobey and Andrew are about in the same league. Good in some ways, bad in other ways. Far from perfect. Looking back at Tobey, I feel that while it could have been a lot worse, it could have also been better.

When it comes to Kirsten, I just feel that she put no heart or soul into her role. She was fine in SM1, but in SM2 and SM3 you could tell that she basically wanted to get away. That, along with how she's written, just makes her damn too unlikeable to me.

To stay on topic though, almost every other role is spot on. The only two other actors I didn't feel was as well cast are Topher Grace and Thomas Haden Church.

I agree with every casting decision made in the trilogy. Even if Topher Grace wasn't anything like his comic version, he was actually perfect for the vision Raimi had for the character but the problem was that we never actually got to see any of that in SM3

I would have loved Anne Hathaway as Catwoman(don't even mention that Vultress fake BS), even Nolan stole the idea and casted her as Catwoman and she was awesome in the role.

I forgot to mention that I once saw an Andrew Garfield interview and he was asked which villain he wanted to see in one of the movies and he said he would love John Malkovich as The Vulture which we all know is who Raimi wanted to play the character, I wonder if that's why Andrew said it.

Here is the interview:

Guys, we should probably move away from the Raimi vs Webb discussion in case the mods come down on us.

I've loved Kirsten Dunst since I saw her in the first film, but I have to admit that her badmouthing of the series really ticked me off.
I think that she signed on for the first film because she thought it would be good for her career, but eventually got tired of the same stuff(getting captured, screaming and being rescued). But still, you don't badmouth the series you're in.
I know she said some stuff, but that was so long ago that I forget. Does anyone remember some of what she may have said or done?

Agreed. I love both of them in these movies, especially Tobey Maguire.

I think Tobey's finest moment as Peter Parker is the moment where he decides that he is Spider-Man "no more." The exchange between Tobey and Cliff Robertson just pulls at my heartstrings. It's so well-done.

My favorite moment with Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane is when MJ finally sees that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Her facial expressions said it all: Initial shock, and then tears of joy and vindication. Her suspicions were finally confirmed, and she understands everything that's happened between her and Peter. It's a great little moment.

T-Mags is great. I think one of my favourite moments with him as Peter is the hospital scene where he confesses his feelings towards MJ. Delivers it so well.

I'm not sure if she's ever really bad mouthed the series. I remember watching interviews where she made a joke about getting kidnapped all the time though.

I remember being drawn towards Tobey as a kid, and I still think he made a great Peter Parker. However, looking back on it, I just didn't think he was a great Spider-Man.

While I loved what Raimi did with Peter and MJ, I just never sensed any passion from Kirsten Dunst in her acting, but that's just my opinion. Raimi himself was brilliant in terms of the roller coaster of emotions that Peter and MJ went through.

Overall, no matter how good any future Spidey films will be, the cast from the original trilogy and the three Raimi movies themselves will forever hold a special place in my heart as a fan. I can still go back and enjoy them as much as I did when I watched them for the first time.

I think both Tobey and Kirsten were perfect in SM1 but not so much in sequels.

Looking back at the films, I think they are still among the best films when it comes to directing. The camera angles, the visual style, the colors etc. are pretty much perfect and still better than most CBM films.

Yes. The cinematography of Spider-man 2 and 3 are phenomenal. Only Snyder's Watchmen betters it in terms of photographic artistry.

Would definitely agree with this, they are above the rest and visually have a uniqueness compared to most.
