Curious how almost always the second part of a super-hero franchise are the most critically acclaimed. My notable list:

Superman 2
Spider-Man II
X2: X-Men United
Hellboy II
Captain America: The Winter Soldier

And of course: The Dark Knight

Seems to be the trend for most movie franchises in general.

1. A good first.
2. An excellent second.
3. A disappointing third.

So far, there are only four trilogies that have broken this mold:

1. The Original Star Wars Trilogy (my #1 favorite film trilogy of all time, by the way)
2. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
3. The Indiana Jones Trilogy (nope, that fourth movie never happened :p)
4. The Toy Story Trilogy

^ Hear hear. 11 years later and it's still awesome. Until TDK it was my favorite CBM, now it sits at a comfortable 2nd favorite after TDK for me.

Hey, if a comic book movie were to replace Spider-Man 2 for the #1 spot, The Dark Knight is a great one to top it.

I have yet to watch The Dark Knight trilogy in one sitting. I think I'll do that sometime this Summer, if only to watch The Dark Knight again (it has been quite a while since the last time I saw it, now that I think about it). TDK is such a fantastic movie. :)

I went to the triple feature showing when TDKR was released, it was awesome to be able to see them all like that, even if I was tired of sitting there by the end. :woot:

I've really gotta do a rewatch of the Raimi films though, can't get enough of them and it's been quite awhile since I've actually watched them.

Raimi movies work great in a movie marathon. Even though 3 not as good as other two it still feel like a continuation and conclusion of Raimi's story.

The one 3rd film in a franchise that pops into my head that was utterly awesome was Nightmare on Elm Street 3. In some cases,I'd consider it better than the original.

Im extremely happy that Raimi still got to direct SM3, without him it probably would have been a complete disaster or just something utterly forgettable like X3

Movie wasn't going to be good anyway. Raimi should have pulled out and saved his reputation.

Always angers me when I read from people that Raimi is "The guy that ruined Spider-Man 3" and they forget about the other two great ones he made.

Raimi was contracted to do 3. I don't think he could have pulled out. Same with Dunst and Maguire.

Bourne Trilogy
#1 is great, #2 is amazing and #3 is absolutely incredible. In my opinion of course. But that trilogy definitely got better with each film. Not counting the Damon-less, Renner lead 4th film.

I love this.

Tobey's body here was excellent. Lean and ripped. Looked like Bruce Lee

He got even bigger and wider for the actual movie.

Yeah, that is a bit weird how Tobey seemed to get bulkier with each film. I wouldn't say fat,but you could tell he put on some pounds. Of course, the suit did come with some extra muscle padding to make him appear physically bigger on screen.

I think it was really only the first movie when he really put in the effort physique wise

In the second he was still lean but we didn't get to see anything physique wise and honestly by the 3rd he was downright puffy looking with the double chin and all.

I would have liked to have seen a reinvigorated Toby in mind and body coming back for a 4th film, to make things up.

Definitely. The Captain America series could be a new contender on that list as well, next year. Really anticipating Spider-Man's appearance in that.

I think that being in Seabiscuit (which was after the first Spider-Man movie) took a toll on Tobey Maguire's body. That's when his back problems started, and why Jake Gyllenhaal was actually considered to replace him in Spider-Man 2 (apparently).

I remember hearing that due to back issues, Maguire didn't want to go through the strenuous task of getting his body back to his physique in the first Spider-Man movie. That's probably why his physique looked best in the first film compared to the others.

Yes I'm aware of the back incident and that probably played a role.

It was a little disconcerting seeing how smallish he looked in his peter park clothes though and how muscular he was in the spider-man suit with all the molded muscles under-neath though.

I see where you're coming from. Makes sense. :)

In a way though, I personally think it works: How can puny Peter Parker, of all people, turn out to be Spider-Man?

(PS- I am mesmerized by your avatar. It's awesome.)

Saaaaaaaaame.

It's probably 5th or 6th for me. I watched it with my oldest daughter last year, and I told her how the scene in Peter's apartment at the end brought tears to my eyes when I saw it in the theater.

S2 has aged surprisingly well.

It and X2 are probably the only comic book films from that era 2000-2004 which don't feel absolutely dated.

I rarely put stock in movie critics' opinions of CBMs because it's obvious that most of them don't know or understand the source material from which the movies sprang. However, Robert Ebert was an exception and he called SM2 the best comic book adaptation to date.

Also, I would put Blade 2 in the mix of 10+ year-old comic book films that hold up quite well.

Definitely. The Captain America series could be a new contender on that list as well, next year. Really anticipating Spider-Man's appearance in that.

I have a great feeling about that film. It has a chance to venture into territory that other CBMs haven't touched, and it could be quite special.

I remember hearing that due to back issues, Maguire didn't want to go through the strenuous task of getting his body back to his physique in the first Spider-Man movie.

I can't fault him for that. I don't know the specifics of his injury, but even the jarring of cardio work can aggravate several types of back problems. Plus, I didn't see a huge difference in his physique between the films. When was saw his back and chest in the church scene, he was in Spidey-like shape. Perhaps the 6-pack was gone, but we never saw his abs to my recollection.

As incredible as the TASM2 suit was, part of me still prefers Raimi's. I really loved the sharpened eyes.

IMO TDK, Spider-Man 2, X-Men 2 and CA: TWS are the epitome of cbms.

you forgot The Bourne Trilogy (ignore legacy)

I totally did. Probably because I have only seen the first two films (which was a very long time ago). I keep forgetting to watch all 3. I've heard several times that the third movie is the best one, too.

It's funny, because I've read the books, and I love them.

Gotta stop coming to this thread too many nostalgic feels...

Really though I don't know what's gonna happen with the next iteration of Spider-Man? but it's gonna tough to live up to the Raimi legacy even now. TASM series was proof of that.
