I'm just glad he's included in that story arc... And he appears to be right along side Cyclops on the issue. I'm also curious why they chose him and not Beast to side with Cyclops, since Bobby has always had a problem with Cyclops' authority, ever since he told him not to follow Alex and Lorna when they left the mansion ("What Lorna Saw" story).

Which was stupid to begin with, because it seemed like Cyclops was blocking Bobby so his brother could get to her... Again, one of the other reasons why I thought he should have been Apocalypse's horseman and not Gambit. That, and the fact that Lorna left him, Emma screwed up his powers, and no one else on the team seems to give him respect. He had nothing to loose.

The story opens with a reckless fight between the New Warriors, filming a reality television show, and a cadre of villains in Stamford, Connecticut. The battle goes awry for the heroes, resulting in villain Nitro creating an explosion that destroys a local school and the surrounding neighborhood, and kills all but one of the Warriors. This event catalyzes a government movement to register all super-powered beings as living weapons of mass destruction. The event also turns public opinion against superheroes, as many of them are blamed for the incident. Due to this, many superheroes -- most notably Johnny Storm, the Human Torch -- are attacked in public by angry civilians. Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to recruit Captain America to become part of the team that will force superheroes to register. Cap refuses, and after being attacked by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents for non-compliance, goes underground to become the figurehead of the anti-registration movement. Iron Man, on the other hand, supports the act and tells the government to leave Captain America to him and the other pro-registration heroes.
The act is soon passed, and a day later Captain America and the Falcon, of Captain America's underground resistance, rescue the Young Avengers from a S.H.I.E.L.D. prison convoy. They bring the teen superheroes to a secret facility that Nick Fury has allowed them to use. Meanwhile, Peter Parker, after deliberating with his wife, Mary Jane Watson, and Aunt May, unmasks himself to an audience of the world press, showing his full support for the registration act. This action causes J. Jonah Jameson to faint, as the thorn in his side for so many years was right under his nose. Norman Osborn, in prison, remarks that Peter broke a deal they had. Meanwhile, Wolverine is hunting down Nitro and the Thunderbolts are recruiting villains to the cause of registered superheroes.

Is the purpose of including them part of creating an internal team dynamic and conflict or because of your passion for the characters?

There is a passion for the characters. I only chose characters who I thought I could voice and move convincingly, characters I felt I could get inside. I do like both of them very much.

If you think of that team, you know the shape of Solomon’s star? The six pointed star? You’ve got a triangle pointing up and a triangle pointing down and they connect to make the six points. Think of my team as being like that. There is a stable triangle, Rogue, Iceman and Cannonball and then there is an unstable triangle, Sabretooth, Mystique and Cable; but then there are points of contact between each of the vertices of the two triangles, links that bind them together.

I wanted characters who went a long way back with and could convincingly who Rogue could trust, rely on, who she would know well enough … these are guys she knows can have her back. With Cannonball you’ve got the whole Cannonball-Cable thing, there’s a history between those characters. With Iceman I was thinking it would be very cool to use him … I have idea for things we can do with his powers and with his character arc that made it a very cool idea to have him in the team.

The cover to X-Men #190 sees Iceman in a very very bad way, and what we do with that, it’s not like a ‘What If?’ that never happened, what you see is what you get, and how he recovers from that situation is, I think, quite interesting. Iceman’s laying on the ground, shattered, only his torso left intact, and Mystique is kissing him passionately on the lips. Roar! It’s a great cover.

Is this then the new relationship you were talking about?

It is, but it doesn’t necessarily proceed in a predictable fashion.

Well, where would be the fun in that? Hooking Mystique and Iceman up - given she's a shapeshifter and he's long-rumoured to be secretly gay, is this an in-joke to fans who like to fantasise of such things, or a deliberate move to encourage that speculation?

No, I can honestly say that never crossed my mind. I guess sex with a shapeshifter would be sort of interesting in that respect, though - and there are obvious echoes there of Bobby's relationship with Cloud, which became strained for just that reason.

But what I'm doing with Iceman and Mystique is different, and I think it will show unexpected facets of both characters.

What do you think will most surprise readers about your X-Men run when they finally pick up the books?

I think they’ll be surprised by some of the things that I do with the characters and with the powers. There are some very very cool beats in the opening arc where powers are used in innovative ways and powers are being developed in odd directions. I think those will surprise and I hope excite people.

Looks like Carey CONFIRMED the Iceman and Mystique relationship....WOW!!! And I'm glad he addressed the shapeshifter & closet gay rumor floating around, because I'm sick and tired of people considering him gay. Not that I have a problem with it.

As long as you don't pick up the Wolverine edition of Civil War. That's the one where he is burned down to his bare skeleton by Nitro, and fully recovers three pages later to seek revenge on him.... What a load of crap. There's an entire thread discussing it.

Okay fellas and gals, I'll throw this out there:

Do you think Iceman is gay or bisexual?

I've been debating this topic for some time now on another forum, and no one has come up with any valid proof. Since his creation, he has been in hetrosexual relationships, and although none of them worked, the relationships did exist. That's the bottom line. There were also times where he's been in compromising situations where it implies he's gay, but nothing more than that.

What do you think?

I think it is possible. It wouldnt make a difference in how I see him as a character. I think if he is gay it would make him more mature, somehow?

Hmmm.... , but would he really be gay if he slept with Mystique, she still a woman in any form she takes. Huh!!?

I don't think Bobby gay but who knows in this day and age anything possible. He could be bi-curious.

I always say if you get a person drank enough, you never know what they might do. Let's just say I've wake up with some unattractive girls before.

In all cases of him realizing his potential, he really didn't do anything... At least the writers didn't do anything with him, other than keep him on the current X-Men team.

1) He realized he could convert his body into organic ice.
2) He realized he could melt into an ice slick (on the ground), and reshape his body.
3) He realized he could add a tremendous amount of moisture to his body to gain mass and super strength.
4) He realized he could add sharp spikes to his body for offensive manuevers.
5) He realized he could freeze large areas (the size of Tokyo).
6) He realized he could unfreeze what he has frozen.
7) He realized he could see the thermal signatures of any living being (like infrared vision).
8) He realized he could detect moisture in his nearby area.
9) He realized he could extract moisture from any living being (killing them in the process if he took out every drop).
10) He realized he could travel in different ways without the use of his ice slide.

Emma never taught him any of these abilities. So you can see why I get pissed off when people say Emma taught him everything he knows. In most of these cases, these things happened BEFORE Emma got a hold of Iceman's body. And even after she occupied it, he's done a lot more than she ever did in that short amount of time she possessed him.

There are still lot of things he hasn't discovered about himself yet. And that's the problem. Iceman is content with the way he is. He never really pushes himself more than he has to. But this time, Carey says he's going to change all that, and make him discover some of that potential.

1)As mist. And also by melting into a water source, like a river, and travel through the water current.

2) Tokyo... in his mini series. And in the Ultimate Universe.

3) During "The Draco" he did this to a demon attacking his team mates. He was only an ice head then, and needed moisture to recreate his body. That was the only way to do it.

4) During X-Men Forever, after freezing an entire space ship, he unfroze certain parts, in order for his team mates to gain access. Otherwise, they would have been frozen if they touched any parts of the ship he froze.

5) I'm not too sure about that, but I would assume it would hurt if they got stuck with any of the sharp icycles.
