The Dark Knight Rises The Official Jim Gordon / Gary Oldman Thread

I want Oldman puffin' a pipe in this one.
I can't really see Oldman's Gordon smoking for whatever reason. And that isn't a bad thing, even though the smoking is apart of the iconography of the character along with the glasses, mustache, and overcoat.

I'd love to see a moment where Gordon comes to his commissioner's office at night, turn on a lamp, and see Batman standing there. Then after a brief exchange, Gordon turns his back for a second to sit down and Batman's gone, the window's open, and the curtains are blowing from the wind.

You mean like that scene from Batman Begins? :) "You're only one man."
"Now we're two."

A bit smoother than that, since Batman's grown and improved so much. And maybe less unfriendly/scary. :funny:

Definitely less unfriendly. Especially judging by the appreciation and friendliness that oozed between them in the final scene of TDK.

I actually have the opposite opinion regarding this - I'm drawing from the first scenes from Dark Victory when we see Batman in Gordon's office, and it's a conversation between a more reserved, cold Batman who's shut everyone out even more now, who isn't showing any sympathies for Harvey, and a frustrated Gordon over that.

For me, the finale of the film should be about Gordon and Batman's finest hour.

I really must read that..

That office sequence is one of my favorite moments in BB.

"Watch for my sign..."

"You're just one man?"

"Now we're two..."

"We?"

Would this be too unconventional or unusual as a final scene between Gordan and Batman in Nolan's franchise...?

Something along these lines could be very effective... Even if it's not quite as friendly.

I don't know about sharing coffee, but definitely end the trilogy with a scene between the two.

Absolutely, the last scene needs to be a Batman/Gordon exchange to round it all off. It's been like that in the last two films so just stick to tradition a little right? Maybe it will end with something that suggests that 'this is how the legacy of Batman started off' and we from this we come to a firm conclusion about the 'early years' saga.

We end with the status-quo of the comics/classical 'Batman' mythology established, and Chris Nolan and his team concludes the story about how myths in their making are as realistic as they can be? Okay I'm pushing it there :P But yes, definitely a firm conclusion with the two. Maybe with the bat-signal reconstructed?

Speaking of status-quos, exactly what can we say is the "definitive" or "classic" status-quo for Batman? The TV Series? The Animated Series? Any particular era of the comics? The current continuity of the comics? Just wondering.

well for me the definitive status quo is the nineties one, bruce as bats, dick as nightwing, tim as robin, cass as batgirl, oracle, etc.

although I love the current bat status quo, especially damien, and I'd like it to stick around for as long as possible

I'm sure it's different for everyone though

It makes sense for their to be a moment between Gordon and Batman at the end of this. While I'm not expecting another rooftop scene (but hey, you never know) I think there will be something where Batman and Gordon meet up and talk after all the events.

It should relate to the theme of crime in Gotham. That it never stops. It keeps going no matter how big of a threat they stop. Batman told Gordon at the end of BB that they could bring Gotham back. How is that going to be at the end of this? Bruce did have that naive thought that he wouldn't be Batman forever, so maybe that viewpoint could change. Either way, the moment between the two should be great.

I love how Gordon's character grew throughout the two films - he started off as this beat cop, and as things unfolded we see him bearing the responsibility of Gotham City, standing on that podium addressing Harvey's eulogy, but in reality talking about Batman. He's always been pressured by machinations around him but he learned to work with the things he had, we see the same pressure bearing on him as he destroys the Bat-signal, arguably a symbol he helped create. This is just as much as Jim's war as it is Bruce's. I wonder how the new commissioner will fare against the freaks of Gotham's underworld? Or the likes of Bane?

Happy birthday Gary Oldman!

Cool! Many happy returns big guy. :) He brought to life some of my most favourite characters on fiction: Jim Gordon, Sirius Black, Count friggin Dracula!

For me, the definitive would be the Rucka/Brubaker era after No Man's Land (pretty much up through Hush and excluding the few books that hack Hama did - stick to GI Joe buddy!). Those were some of my favorite stories. Though, Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan Batman of the mid to late 90's was pretty damn good too.

I agree, one of my favourite actors all time.

I'd imagine the end of the film be Batman and Gordon meeting again after everything is soothed over and with batsignal and a talk sort of like Batman Begins to give us a round circle only this time its an established Batman who is now not as niave and knows the war on crime is for life.

As for Gordon I'd like him and his wife to be seperated in the next film kind of like in Dark Victory to give some consequence to the Two Face incident

The fate of the Gordon household is tricky. I want to see him happy, but I think he's going to have to stick with his fate in the comics.

And yeah, for me the status quo is the one from the 90s, but at the same time I think the ideal one is BTAS / late 70s era Batman. Maybe with these trilogy you can end with that status quo, minus Grayson and Barbara that is.
