The Official Lanterns News & Discussion Thread

CC is a 22m episode series. Most of those are formulaic. That's kinda the lay of the land there. That show doesn't really suffer from it. It has other actual flaws.

But even with its similar set up, I get something different from it than I did Peacemaker, or even TSS. So yeah, no part of me believes this will be like any of those. Nothing really suggests it tbh.

When I was watching it as it premered, it didn't bother me but I lost interest for a few a weeks then binged the rest and it felt like a ****ing slog to get through. The finale was embarrassing.

My concern wasn't that it's gonna be typical Gunn, my concern was its going to be dark and nihilistic like True Detective because WB keeps comparing it that everytime there's an update for it then you get the showrunner from Ozark which is another nihilistic show. I love both but I don't see that particular tone working for Green Lantern but like you said, they're likely just taking the cop dynamics and the murder conspiracy angle and you're right. I doubt we'll be seeing Hal Jordan regurgitate Thomas Ligotti.

I do think this series doesn't need to be TVMA... Green Lantern isn't really that character, but I kinda feel it may end up being that way. I think kids should be able to enjoy GL too. Idk if HBO has ever done anything that's not mature.

I do hope we see more Lanterns! This is my most anticipated series by far.

Well they’re currently doing a Harry Potter series, and while I haven’t been following it, I presume that won’t be TV-MA. His Dark Materials was also relatively kid-friendly. I’m expecting Lanterns to be a heavy-ish PG-13. Maybe some swearing and sensuality but nothing extreme.

Ah, I totally forgot about His Dark Materials!

I hope that's what it is!

That would be TV-14.

"X-Files intensity " would seem about right for this.

Some of the stuff even in Geoff Johns' run was pretty violent and gruesome, by the way.

Yeah, I've read the Johns runs numerous times, and sometimes I think it went a little overboard tbh. I still think it's the best comic book run of all time, though. Haha!

You still knew exactly what I'm talking about when I said it ergo it's not "empty" and has meaning. You just don't like that it's dismissive which is fair, you're clearly invested in this project.
Yes they are.

I think his JSA run is better but I love them both.

I preferred Tomasi’s concurrent GL Corps run over Johns’ main run tbh. Johns’ run was my intro to the character/world though so I’ll always have a soft spot for it, despite not liking him much as a writer, and despite Hal no longer being one of my faves.

Tomasi's run was a chef's kiss to be sure. That was was where I fell in love with Kilowog and Guy. It was the perfect complementary piece to the Hal book!

Creature Commandos was a miserable chore to watch but I have zero concerns this will remotely evoke it in tone, style or quality. CC didn't even really feel all that much like the prior Gunn projects it was shamelessly regurgitating.

I pray to Zod the other DC projects differ from a lot of the Gunn flavor. Too much sweet is bad for everybody. I get that most have to follow a certain tone and what not, but sweet Lawd had to stop that CC mid way. His SKwad also didn’t have much rewatch value at all. Eh.

I'm a big fan of Gunn's movies but I need the Gunn tone... maybe once every several years. That's all.

Lol you wouldn't believe it :o, but people are mad at that quote.

Lol CC is not that bad, sheesh. Look at the creatives though. This is not gonna be like Gunn's work.

As far as Creature Commandos, the ending was a tad slapdash, but I otherwise thought it was fine. But circling back to what kicked off this whole line of discussion, I really don’t see what a Suicide Squad-adjacent series scripted by Gunn has to say about a series that’s completely outside that bubble and written by other folks entirely, just because it’s been described as “grounded”.

Kind of just seems like another example of “I don’t care for Gunn so let me stomp my feet a little bit.”

No but we are going to see Hal turn into Parallax, mutilate Kilowagg and the other Lanterns, and a bunch of little blue Guardians.

Poorna said that they start shooting on Tuesday. She was doing a interview with Collider.

Yup. Specifically, they're pre-shooting (or "camera testing") starting Tuesday.

Which is basically just jargon for "they're shooting before the officially scheduled 'day one' of shooting."

Don’t get me wrong the combination of Superman/Peacemaker will be a fun movie/streaming pairing but Supergirl/Laterns has jumped to the top of my list. DCU slow and steady.
