The Official Lanterns News & Discussion Thread

No telling how accurate any of this is, but hey…

Isn't this the guy that got a brutal takedown by Gunn? Lol

Probably one of my most anticipated shows of next year. I think this and Supergirl are going to be the moment of truth for this DCU experiment and it’s continued longevity as they’re both the first projects being worked on by someone other than James Gunn. We’ve seen what this cinematic universe looks like with him directly involved. Now, we will see how it fares with other creatives at helm and whether audiences will get on board. That’s going to be the real test.

If they can clear that then I think we’ll be all right.

I feel like generally any fandom has pretty much gone down the gutter.

It's just not fun anymore. Just people being constantly cynical (in an attempt to vent out their frustrations?).

If its not exactly what people have dreamed about while reading decades of comics then it's bound to be bad, apparently. It's been pretty easy to not engage with DC fans lately.

If they had made a young Hal Jordan series, people would complain about John Stewart not being the focus.

So, whatever.

It's pretty easy not to engage with fandom, period.

Pierre is actually the cover story; but his article doesn't tell much about Lanterns.

Thought this bit from the showrunner interview was interesting; is this new info?

Our story takes place in a couple of different time periods and so the challenge was for the characters be consistent at their core. John's sort of a different person in one of them than he is in another. And I do think the physicality and magnetism that Aaron brings to the role brought that all together.

So it's only one magazine, but I hope with this latest promotional push, there's a teaser trailer before Christmas.

Is it really that shocking Hal fans wouldnt be happy their character is aged up and likely going to die in season 1?
With a concept like Green Lantern that’s focused so much on the legacy/mantle? Surprised, no, because fanboys gonna fanboy when it comes to their faves. But find it ridiculous, yes. This DCU ain’t gonna be around for 20 years, so if we want to see characters other than Hal Jordan in the spotlight, starting at the end of Hal Jordan’s tenure makes the most sense. Hal may have the most famous stories but he’s also the most boring (and most problematic) GL as a character so there’s simply better characters to focus on. Getting him out of the way quickly so we can get to them is 100% the smart play imo. They are perfectly teeing themselves up for some type of version of Emerald Twilight, which is the point where Lantern lore started to get interesting, so I think that’s pretty ideal.

We also saw a relatively faithful take on Hal’s origin in a blockbuster movie already, even if the movie as a whole was bad. It’s also been solidly adapted into animation at least a couple of times. Frankly, it’s not an interesting enough origin to keep harping on like Batman’s anyway lol. When put next to that of other Lanterns, pretty standard. And Hal’s “glory days” are not worth centering a franchise around. His fall (and potential resurrection) and everything that happened after that is where the good stuff is.

Hal has gotten plenty of focus in GL media and stories in the past. It’s time for others to get their time in the spotlight.

And for the record, I predict Kyle Chandler and his portrayal will be better for Hal Jordan’s rep than just about anything that came before, so yeah, I’m finding it hard to feel bad for Hal Jordan fans at the moment.

I would ask them are they fans of Green Lantern or simply Hal Jordan? Hal is not the original, he was never the only. If people need their usual bland cis straight white male lead, the DCU will have plenty of that for them.

This is the constant state of DC fandom. I just think a lot of people enjoyed the proceeding decade because it was real fun to dump on the DCEU. When the shoe is on the other foot, people grow defensive.

This is why I've learned to just care what I think about stuff.

Any fan would be mad if their fave was aged up and possibly given 1 movie or 1 season of a show. Superman fans would be livid if he was possibly replaced after one movie. Same with Batman fans. ANd they have decades of adapations.

Green Lantern ain’t Superman and is not remotely defined by a single character as the lead. That’s a terrible comparison. Hal was my own intro to the mythos. Yet I discovered better characters/leads for the title. That’s what happens with a franchise designed around a whole Corps of characters. You can have a fave without getting mad others are getting the spotlight (with your fave still as co-lead no less!) after years of getting your fave in the spotlight.

Yep. Superman is Clark Kent. Batman is Bruce Wayne. Wonder Woman is Diana.

Green Lantern, like Flash, encompasses multiple, thankfully very different characters. Hal isn't even the original Lantern.
