The Official Lex Luthor Casting Thread

I don't why, but when I first looked a that Fishburne pic I was thinking "did he go to the Matrix premiere in that" then realized the scene it was from.

but there are plenty of white actors that fit Lex perfectly. there's ABSOLUTELY no reason to cast a black actor as Lex other than for the sake of change.
You're right, a black actor shouldn't be cast just for change. He should be cast because he has the greatest potential of all the actors going for the part.

btw, just because a character is fictional and their name doesn't indicate their race doesn't mean they could or SHOULD be played by someone of a race other than regularly depicted. Lex is white, has always been depicted as white, and there are plenty of white actors that fit him perfectly........so just drop it.
What if none of those great white actors want to play Luthor? Would you still prefer a mediocre white actor, just for the sake of being accurate as possible to the character's looks? That's just wrong. You'd be putting something that isn't that important ahead of a potential great performance.

when names like Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hardy, Jason Isaacs, and Billy Zane are being thrown around....you think that Laurence Fishburne has more potential than ALL OF THEM to be the best Lex Luthor??!! i don't say this often, but you're a frikkin' loon!!! nevermind that Laurence Fishburne, regardless of race, doesn't even LOOK like Lex Luthor....what more is that his acting of late has been lacking. what a ridiculous statement!

i'll eat that, and spit it out right back at you. what if Laurence Fishburne doesn't want to play Luthor??? doesn't matter right? this is all hypothetical casting talk anyway! regardless of who actually WANTS to play Luthor, it's crazy to think Laurence Fishburne is the most QUALIFIED.

well then if you're going to open up the arena to Blacks, then it also should be open to Asians and Hispanics........in which case i think Ken Watanabe would make a much more menacing Lex Luthor than Laurence 'i haven't done anything worth remembering since the Matrix' Fishburne! PLEASE drop this crazy talk! this type of stuff tends to turn viral on the hype...and that's something we really don't need.

the hard truth is that race DOES matter. i'm sorry, but it DOES! you don't cast a Black Clark Kent or an Asian Peter Parker....so you don't cast a Black Lex Luthor ESPECIALLY when there's rising talent out there such as Tom Hardy! the only reason Michael Clarke Duncan was cast as Kingpin was because there were few other choices and he was hot $#!+ back then and the only reason Samuel L. Jackson was cast as Nick Fury is because they based the newest rendition DIRECTLY on him with his OWN approval! the truth of the matter is that race most CERTAINLY matters when casting a fictional character that's always been depicted as a certain race. as Cenk from 'the Young Turks' likes to say....'it's not right, but it's real!'

If Hamm is Superman in the new movie,Lex Luthor simply can´t be Tom Hardy.
Hardy is very young to play an Superman/Jon Hamm´s enemy.

I'm talking about black actors playing white characters in general. I never said Fishburne would be great, I said I thought he had the ability to be good.

Watanabe sounds even better than Fishburne.

Tim Burton didn't seem to think so with Billy Dee Williams playing Harvey Dent. Gotta wonder what Idris Elba would think about a statement like that, considering he's playing a character based off of the "White God" of Norse mythology.

that's basically the same thing...but whatever helps you sleep at night.

Never said he was the most qualified.
you said, quote "he has the greatest potential of all the actors going for the part".....again, that's basically the same thing as saying he's the most qualified. it's not word for word, the same thing....but the essence is the same.

even though i wouldn't want to see Watanabe play Lex, at least we can agree on something...

these are minor characters in their respective movies. it seems they were also made simply for the sake of making a more racially diverse cast, since all of the main character were/are white. Idris Elba in Thor is also a bad example, since him and the Asian actor look very much out of place even within the context of the film. that being said, drop your pride and let this argument go. there are very few exceptions where changing the race of a character is okay and most of the time they're not the main character(s). try making the Flash or the Punisher Black and see how that works.

At this point, it couldn't hurt.

lol...don't give them any ideas. it's already bad enough that i mentioned it, hehe

Not Luthor... but Brainiac.....:o
BRILLIANT!!!! WOW!!!

he needs to work on his accent though. there were some parts in Inception where i couldn't quite understand what he was saying.....and i'm Asian, haha

Based on his current and past work it should be pretty obvious that Mark Strong will be either Luthor or Brainiac.

RIght?

haha...you would think. seems he's the new goto guy for 'menacing/evil/sinister' villain. i'd take him for Brainiac, but i feel they won't find a better Lex Luthor than Tom Hardy.

i think that with a huge movie with superman, changing a characters race would be a bigger story than the movie itself. "so lois lane is black" how about that?

not opposed to it, but i think it would more a publicity stunt than anything else. this is true even if lts say will smith was the best possible actor to be supes, it is so different from the character that its an issue. i am not racist, its just that something this drastic would have ramifications. thats how this country works.

I do not think a black actress would work for Lois. At the same time a more exotic look would be interesting though. It can still look like the comics if a lighter mixed race woman played Lois. In the case of Lex, it has been talked about that many people thought the TAS version was indeed black. I could see Denzel knocking it out of the park.

"He," wasn't in reference to anyone specific, like how the South Park rednecks say "they" took err jerbs.

Tom Hardy please!

I'd been trying for ages to figure out which actor would be best suited to play a Lex Luthor who is the same age as Superman. I think Tom Hardy is it!

 really??? let's just cast Denzel Washington as Superman while we're at it! i like Laurence Fishburne (though he's been losing likability lately) but Lex Luthor is white....not black. let's not 'Kingpin' him please.

Actually, Denzel has been my "outside the box" choice for Luthor since the end of Casting War I. Now that it appears the Hype world may be on the brink of Casting War II, I'm going to go into it saying that Denzel would make a great Luthor. Though if they insist on staying white and younger, this suggestion of Hardy that I see everywhere and Olyphant both seem adequate to me.

My reasons for choosing Denzel are that he can be quite charming himself, his performance in Training Day certainly showed a dark, ambitious side, and I would vote for him (I'd love to see a politically ambitious, successful Luthor, but even if he's not, that fact is important)

I'm almost 100% positive that Lex will be played by either a big name actor, or an up-and-coming film star (like Tom Hardy). However, just in case they go the unknown (or little known) route, what do you guys think of Titus Welliver as Lex? He's best known as The Man in Black on Lost, and has played other villainous and sympathetic roles quite well. I think he could be an interesting Lex.

I love Denzel as much as the next sentient being (along with Laurence and Ken), but I can't really see him as Luthor. I do think that the way a character is traditionally portrayed should be a definite factor in casting, but I'm still willing to bend things if it's not an iconic character (which Lex has become) and if the actor suits the role better than any white actors. Of course, a case can be made that Supe's supporting cast is heavily white-washed, and I agree to an extent, but the only suggestion to amend that that really works for me is Danny Glover as Perry.

i'm not a big follower of the comics. Can u explain this story more specific? I always thought Superman an Superboy was the same person.:whatever:

In the Silverage they did the whole before Superman was Superman he was Superboy fighting crime in Smallville. So they was the same persons, their just been multiple Superboy's since then.

And just like in SV tv show Lex Luthor was a fan of Superboy but then hated him cause he cause him to go bald and lose his hair. And he hated Superman because he jealous of him mainly.

It went something like that I think.
