The Official "Nova" Comic Book Discussion Thread - Part 1

How can you say the Annhilation wave could not work, there insects of various shapes which look great CGI.

Most of the action in Anny was gunplay and space combat in the main book.

-You have basically a "Riddick rip" in Drax, a gunsmith in Peter Quill, and a human space ship in Nova. All that stuff would translate fine to the silver screen.

I don't think you can capture an epic like Annihilation in a compressed 2 hours. Even with half the cast. Just so much storytelling going on, so much that will be needed to be done. I'd rather it not even be attempted.

I'd take anything to pimp Nova...looks like Loeb is calling the shots now though.

I predict an earth based Nova series featuring this new guy with hardly a mention of the last crew and "retcons a plenty."

We'll never find out what was up with Garthen Saal and Tarcel dammit!

I wouldn't mind an Annihilation animated movie. Live-action, though, I'd have to agree with Morningstar: it wouldn't work with the rights to the FF's entire stable of characters split off under Fox.

And that's the heart break really. Even if they weren't going to continue their run, DnA left plenty of threads for new creative teams to pick up on and spin their own tale.

Saal, Tarcel, the Blastaar-Nova animosity, Namorita's return...a lot of material for them to build on.

****, without even referencing I remember the closing credit of #36 was NEVER THE END!

Already Marvel is undoing that.:sbr:

The thing that bothers me is that the Old NOVA was never a bomb, especially in light of the lack of promotion the article talks about, he actually had decent sales which slowly dwindled into a zone where cancellation was actually very premature (in fact the book was described to be on hiatus, not cancelled)

What should have happened was the usual that happens to a decent book in need of a spark:

-Creative Team change
-cool hero guest star
-Spotlight with a major event/team (heck being featured in a cartoon)
-possible duty on a major team (Avengers or Defenders)

Some of these actually happened..in that NOVA was featured on Secret Avengers. While this book sold well, it was a horrible showing for NOVA who was insulted in this appearance.

I do think it is "neat" to have Mark Waid writin a nova tale, but after all it's one story.

Nova fans have seen this before with Erik Larsen, and nothing needs to be said about that run.

Personally, I think the story of Annihilation should have been considered for a feature film. Virtually all the characters are available (save SS and Galactus).

Certainly the cosmic setting would equal a decent budget, but when Marvel is sending Wanted and Kick Ass to the theaters....why not consider this for the silver screen.

DnA's NOVA series was the longest running volume the character had - lasting 3 full years before the era of double-shipping. It did launch on the heels of ANNIHILATION, but virtually all ongoing series launch off an event these days. I honestly think the death blow for NOVA's sales was the surge of $3.99 priced books. Before that, NOVA's sales were rock solid, never falling below I think 25k for an entire year. But after more and more $3.99 books started to force shops and fans to spend more to read the "important" books, NOVA started to drop. When the bigger books (i.e. the Top 40 books) cost more to buy, most retailers and fans compensate by culling the smaller books. I've seen people dump AVENGERS ACADEMY for similar reasons.

In hindsight, linking the space books to SECRET INVASION would have made sense, but I wasn't looking forward to the idea of Bendis writing Nova and/or the space characters. Then again, if back in 2007 someone told me Ed Brubaker would write Nova in an Avengers book of his own and it'd suck, I'd not have believed them. Yes, the appearance in SECRET AVENGERS wasn't flattering, to say the least.

I don't think a live action ANNIHILATION film could work with certain characters off limits, but an animated DTV could be glorious. It would involve a lot of characters and condensed origins, though.

That is a shame, and I share your prediction. Loeb hasn't been a boon to any story or franchise for years now. The reason is tragic, but I grow weary of his "therapy" being mangling franchises which up until then were doing fine without him. I feel he's more about meeting deadlines and pleasing the focus groups then having a soul to anything he works on anymore, and while that may be a boon in working on TV, it's not usually enough for actual quality stories.

And that's the heart break really. Even if they weren't going to continue their run, DnA left plenty of threads for new creative teams to pick up on and spin their own tale.

Yes, there is a wealth of material left over. But, so long as it's still there, someone can revisit it someday. I mean, INVINCIBLE is all written by Robert Kirkman and even HE takes 2-5 years to follow up some subplots.

In some ways the quality of NOVA was dropping, I did not care for the Sphinx Arc. But it was an easy fix. Thanos Imperitive was very underrated.

What we should have got..was a hybrid book of the casts from GOTG and NOVA, characters we bonded with and already had the track record for mid level sales.

Annihilators was a "decent" idea, but you could see the faults on the concept a mile away.

I just never imagined a marvel where there were 0 cosmic books. Jack Kirby would be horrified at this marvel U.

Nice to know guys like Marv Wolfman and Jim Starlin are banned from Marvel....and lets not forget Marvel drove away Giffen after annihilation too!

Loeb is such a butcher. He messed up my Hulk after a beloved arc, messed up Ultimates (actually the whole line till now), now he's going to mess up our NOVA! He'll probably mess up 616 Avengers too, and make us pine for the days of Bendis and his witty Sentry stories.

Yeah, that Sphinx arc was a bit of a bore. A hybrid GOTG/Nova book would be awesome, but I can hear people complaining about it feeling "crowded" already.

Personally I'd make 3 books minimum

Cosmic Avengers (Nova, Quasar, Moondragon, Beta Ray Bill, Mantis)

GOTG ( Groot, Rocket R, Star Lord, Captain Victory, Jack Flag)

Nova book

Surfer's a great supporting character. He can get stale I guess to some in an ongoing.

I would give a new Surfer ongoing a shot if they decided to go that route. Could be a way to reintroduce a few characters and clean up some loose ends without having to resort to too many new books that might get us all OMGOMGOMG and get cancelled after 5 issues (S.W.O.R.D., Atlas...).

Watch, SS would be one of those books.

I wanna know what the rest of Galactus' heralds are doing too, now that I think about it. I mean, we know they're off finding snacks for him, but surely there are some fun stories to be told about their adventures.

If Marvel did a cosmic title that was 64 pages long and had 3 or 4 stories from different creators in it, would you guys buy it?

Assuming it would be monthly, it would probably be about 5 bucks a pop. I would totally get it.

I think that's what Marvel needs - a little contraction. They could do a "mega-zine" for the Avengers, Spider-Man and the X-Men lines. They could even drop some titles then, especially in the case of the X-Men.

man, **** the digital comics movement. I REALLY want to read this book. It's Mark Waid on a cosmic book. Even if it's not Rider. But I don't have a tablet of any sort, and I refuse to read comic books on my phone or laptop when I can read a paper copy.

Get your **** together, Marvel.

I wouldn't mind a return of the old Unlimited series. Rolling out once every 3 months, several backups behind a main story, I would definitely get those each and every time they come out.

One of my favorite books back in the day was Midnight Sons Unlimited.

His mini last year was actually pretty darn good. Pak wrote it.
It was okay except for the fact that it hinged on the Surfer losing his power. I tend to view stories where uber-powerful characters lose that power to be the weakest kind, indicative of writers who are uncomfortable with playing to a powerful character's strengths.
