Yeah, I was just going to mention that I finally shelled out and got a new DS3 this past week because I desperately needed one.

But I guess it makes sense since the DS4 has features that the DS3 can't do. It really does seem like Sony is trying to cut ties to the past generation.
The only significant thing the DS3 does not have is the trackpad and I doubt that will be an essential function of every PS4 game. The ONLY reason I can see for them not letting you use a DS3 on the system is to make new purchases on a more expensive controller. Both use Bluetooth. Both have the same buttons (Select/Start could be emulated for Share/Option). The headset connection isn't necessary. It stinks especially for minor things such as PSN content and the inevitable PS1/PS2/PS3 bc via PSN purchases or Gaikai streaming. Is the DS4 really needed for that stuff? I think not

i was talking about the older systems, so they don't just dump them when a new one comes out. they still keep the systems alive. so you don't have to worry about your ps3 it still has some years left in it.
I traded in my original PS1 towards the purchase of a PS2 bc I knew I could play all those games on my new system. If my PS2 was in good working condition, Id have done the same for the PS3. It would be good if I could do the same for the PS3/PS4 bc it would definetly make me get one at launch while resale value for the PS3 is still high.

I wonder if Insomniac will ever make a PS exclusive game again? I don't want Ratchet and Clank to be done with. :(
I think I read that they will make future Ratchet games but I could be wrong on that. I definetly think they will make another PS exclusive. I don't think Fuse will do well unfortunately and will most likely get lost in the shuffle. Not that Resistance was a big seller, but it is defiantly regarded as one of the better series on the PS3 and they were really respected and well known within Playstation ecosystem and community. Plus Sony treated them really well. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a Sony exclusive project within a year or 2

Wasn't there a cable you could get to use your DS2 controller on the PS3?

Sony needs to think this through.

If gamers even suspect greed is the motivation for no BC the backlash could be fatal.

Remember netflix and Sony cannot afford to lose further ground to Microsoft.
What? The PS4 looks incredible in its own regard, and if you already have a PS3, just keep the thing... It's a moot point, and I'm glad they're not compromising the potential of the PS4 to include the Cell processor for BC reasons. It's really Sony's own fault for spoiling gamers by including PS1 with PS2, but that was really just a bonus, not a necessity.

With all the social gaming additions&focus for PS4 I'm surprised Sony didn't announce major upgrades to PS Home.

I guess the're dropping it!?,I really like Home But it needs way more interaction options than walking/dancing&chatting for the most part

It would have been cool if they could have included ps1 and ps2 BC, if the cell processor really was an issue. But it does look like Streaming is their answer to BC.

Streaming Sucks. :(

At least downloading doesn't suck when you can now play the content as the're downloading

I don't think so. I remember the older dualshock having a different type of connector, PS3 was all USB.

Why though?

The reason the online was better with Live was mainly (especially now) the fact of cross chat. And a significantly better console how? Again I think about games and Sony has TONS more exclusive games then MS does. And if you look at my list above it speaks for it self with just IP's.

I don't use the cross chat features or have yet to use them on the 360, the reason the online seems like a better experience is that everything is a little more user friendly I feel. Access to everything is usually less than 4 button presses away.

The menu system on the 360 is just so much easier to navigate, not that the PS3's is difficult, however you do more scrolling on the PS3 from left to right, then top to bottom etc than you do on the 360.

By significantly the better console I'm talking about all round. Performance for example, I don't play Call of Duty on the PS3 or Xbox as I play all shooters on the PC, however I've seen comparison shots in terms of the graphical quality in regards to the latest Black Ops 2 & the difference is very noticable. Of course the PC demolishes both in terms of graphical capabilites, however the differnce between the PS3/360 looks alarmingly big. Not to mention the PS3 gets lower FPS (at least on CoD & FIFA) than the 360 & anyone that plays games online will tell you, having more FPS can be the difference between winning/losing or life/death in certain games online.

I've had both consoles & I've had the Playstation, Playstation 2 & Playstation 3, so it's not like I'm some Microsoft 'fan' or anything like that. But between the PS3 & the 360, the 360 is my gaming console & the PS3 is currently my Blu-Ray player.

Microsoft has exclusive things as well besides just games, they've some sort of exclusive deal with the UFC for PPV viewing through the 360, which I don't use as I get them all on ESPN as part of my Sky package, however if I didn't have that I would, also has the Sky Player which enables you to watch your sky channels through your Xbox without needing another Sky+ box & all it's cables wired into the room.

Now the PS4 with their new PSN has cross chat, amazing online features with Gaiki, and can do what live can do plus a whole lot more. Unless you really like Halo/Gears I would say that Sony may have more to offer. And their online service rigth now beats anything MS has. However we will have to wait to see what Live has in store with the third Xbox but without cloud servicing I doubt they could do the interesting things the PS4 can do like the sharing of stuff and virtually helping your friends which is such an amazing feature. I have a feeling you did not watch the whole event, did you just see the game trailers or did you see the whole segment they spent on the PSN?

The PS3's online service beats the current Live? If that's what you are saying then you are completely 100% wrong. The PSN at the moment is garbage in comparison to Live, I'm sure the PSN will be significantly improved for the PS4, however given it's current state it would be impossible for them to go anywhere other than up.

It will be the same for Microsoft & Live though as well, come the time the 720 is released they'll have improved on their current service & it's features for their next console.

there were 3rd party adaptors but nothing supported by Sony

PlayStation seems to treat Sucker Punch, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog really well and at the same time they seem to have had a great relationship with each other in the past.

I'm speaking in regards to PS1-PS3 games. Unless those are downloadable. It sucks IMO. :p

Not in my opinion. Seems to work well for Netflix, and I've used Onlive before and it worked fine.

I use Netflix all the time, but streaming games would require a constant good connection I would think. And if your internet is down or you don't have internet you're kinda screwed.

I don't think so. I remember the older dualshock having a different type of connector, PS3 was all USB.

I found this. :D

I saw this great tweet that said "The best console, the SNES, was not backwards compatible." I gotta say, I understand why people would be upset, but its not like Sony is required to make it that way.

It also makes me wonder if the reason for this is because the tech simply wouldn't allow it to. I mean, like they wanted this super powerful system and in order to get that, they needed to cut back on some things from the PS3, and this was just one of them. If that's the case, I don't mind, but I feel like a lot of people are assuming that Sony was just to lazy or money-hungry to leave that out.

I can understand Sony not having native backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4, but they could have made the transition a lot smoother. As someone having a PlayStation for 17 years now, taking backwards compatibility and taking the saves I had with them onto the next system has become something that I (and many gamers) have taken for granted.

There are so many things that Sony could be doing like at the very least being able to transfer your saves onto the PlayStation 4 and then be able to keep all the hard work you've done (like on LittleBigPlanet) when playing a streamed game. Or maybe buy an accessory that has the parts necessary for backwards compatibility and customize the system to have it. Or maybe offer two SKUs, one without it and a more expensive one that does have it.

They really could have easily found a middle ground here and they chose not to take it.

As long as Sony continues to support the PS3 after the launch of the PS4 I will shut my mouth after time hehe. A reboot idea is interesting. But I had this crazy dream idea of Naughty Dog doing through 4's for the PS4. Crash 4, Jak 4, and Uncharted 4. :awesome:

I wonder if Insomniac will ever make a PS exclusive game again? I don't want Ratchet and Clank to be done with. :(
I doubt we will ever see Crash again since I believe those rights, along with Spyro and some other characters belong o someone else who has done nothing with them in years, hence why they still haven't appeared in All-Stars.

But I can definitely see them promoting some of those games at E3, unless they they do another kind of Golden Abyss game with Uncharted.

But, but ...... it has a cool light on the top. :oldrazz:

Not in my opinion. Seems to work well for Netflix, and I've used Onlive before and it worked fine.
I had all sorts of problems with my online connection, especially with Netflix, but once I connected it directly to my Ethernet, I haven't had any issues, unless it was something on my end.

While it started off that way, I really think it's a stretch to call PSN garbage in comparison to Xbox Live at this stage. Asides from cross-game chat, what services does Live offer that PSN doesn't? And at least PSN offers free online gameplay, PlayStation Plus gives you free games galore, and you don't have to subscribe to PlayStation Plus in order to access the content.

It will be the same for Microsoft & Live though as well, come the time the 720 is released they'll have improved on their current service & it's features for their next console.
I dunno, I really don't see how either Sony or Microsoft can vastly expand their offerings asides from improved social functions that Sony announced with the PlayStation 4. I think that Xbox Live and PSN will pretty much be at parity with the next gen consoles.

As a massive Spyro and Crash PS1 fan I know they haven't had the rights since the PS1 era. Thats why its a crazy dream!! :D I mean at the conference they even had Crash music! (I was hopeful they were going to appear in All-Stars anyways with the likes of the Big Daddy and Dante in there...)

I kinda hope Naughty Dog continues to develop Uncharted. I haven't played Golden Abyss and I plan on it being my first Vita title(technically I already have it because of Plus ;)) but Naughty Dog is just perfect at Uncharted.

I agree, PSN has grown into this fantastic thing that can pretty well rival Xbox LIVE. Plus its free. Its funny with the 10.00 credit that happened recently I saw this comment saying "we pay Microsoft to play online but Sony pays us!" It just makes me think how Sony is so cool when it comes to their service and sales over what Microsoft has done. PlayStation Plus to me is kinda like the equivalent of Xbox LIVE Gold, except you get free games too and its cheaper than Gold as well!

Yes you do. Without a subscription, you don't get access to any of those free games

First the menu is changing for the PSN, and that is just the case. Additional the "performance" for the PS4 is different now, because the architectural structure is based off of PC no longer the Cell processor which is why there was such problems with transfer of third party games. So the PS4 and the XBOX 3 speak the same language. Second, from the source that has been right about everything so far, the PS4 also is faster, it runs at 1.84 terrabytes while the Xbox 3 only runs at 1.48. So now the graphical difference between them will be none at all, or the PS4 runs slightly faster.

In terms of those exclusives you are talking about have nothing to do with games, and if that is important fine, but I buy my console for GAMES, and Sony does much better with that.

The current PSN is not "quite" as good as Live, but close. However the new PSN shown with the PS4 is better then the current Live, so many more features, and the cloud technology of Gaiki is just stunning. That and I love I can turn off my console, leave turn it back on and it goes right to the game I was playing and right at the moment I left. With the new designed PSN and all those features, the XBOX Live really does not have much to brag about "right now". They very well may show many more features. PSN as Hippie said does a lot, PSPlus does even more with it just in terms of service. You can say you don't prefer the menu, but it clearly is changing with the PS4. However the PSN ha become much more user friendly over the years. It started out bad, but except for Cross Chat there is not much more that Live does above and beyond. But the New PSN really in terms of features blows it out of the water currently.

Haha nice.

Thanks for these.

I'm guessing that Sony will not block used games, but developers/publishers will probably start making access codes that are needed to play used games.
Yeah, developers definitely want it and have probably applied pressure to both Sony & Microsoft. This would be the way to satisfy them all. Online passes are already getting more common and that is a partial attempt towards a full used game license.

Why would you not make you console backwards compatible?

If anything, having a much larger library would make you console more desirable.

If the 3DS wasn't backwards compatible, I wouldn't have bought it.

I think it will be though, why change it now?

Because building and maintaining a faster, more stable, online ecosystem costs money. MS doesn't just charge for the hell of it, and XBL is a better experience as a result.

Also, Sony has seen the kind of cash-flow that MS has been enjoying this entire generation.

There is no guarantee that online play will be free until they say it is.
