Playstation The Official PS4 Thread - Part 13

If you're oozing with money, well, sure.
But for the reasons you said, I wouldn't. Even after the Pro came out, I bought the Slim version (2TB). I'm perfectly happy with it. That was my first PS4.

I've seen people commenting that the difference is not that huge between the Pro and the vanilla. If you don't have 4K HDR, then it should be even less noticeable.

Thank you, I do appreciate the above info.

So the PS4 Pro is $399.99 and PS4 Slim is $299.99 (1TB) which will save me $100.

I think I'll go with that. I'm just wondering if this is worth it at all since the PS5 is likely coming out in a few years. Maybe I should hold off if it's just for hard drive space.

Is PS NOW worthwhile? It seems like there is a good selection of games from the PS3 console, but I am concerned with the quality of gameplay, particularly with speed and lagging.

PlayStation CEO: PS4 entering final phase of life cycle [Update]

(But how long is the final phase?)

PS4-End-Life-Cycle_05-22-18.jpg

PlayStation 4 is entering the final phase of its life cycle, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera said at Sony Investor Relations Day 2018 in Tokyo today.

The platform first launched in North America and Europe in November 2013, followed by Japan in February 2014. It has shipped 79 million units as of March 31, 2018.
While PlayStation 4 entering its final phase should result in a negative impact on sales, Kodera noted that recurring revenue via membership services such as PlayStation Plus should mitigate the blow.

Kodera also noted that while Sony is investing in first-party, it is not entirely for the creation of new IP. The refreshment of existing IP and development of successful IP as franchises are also part of the company’s plan to strengthen content.

According to Kodera, Sony’s current medium-term management plan period, which runs until March 2021, is expected to be a momentary squat to further strengthen the PlayStation business.

Regarding PlayStation VR, Kodera said that while the platform continues to sell, the growth speed of the market as a whole is lower than predicted. From now on they will aim for healthy growth with a more realistic outlook.

As for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s strategy for fiscal year 2018 (which started on April 1, 2018), the company will enrich and utilize exclusive titles for PlayStation 4, leverage the platform’s install base and active users, and grow and improve recurring revenue (PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Store, PlayStation Now, etc.).

Thanks, @Mochi_WSJ (2, 3, 4, 5).

Update 05/23/18 at 2:00 a.m.: In an interview with Bloomberg Japan, Kodera said that Sony Interactive Entertainment is considering “various options around the PS Vita.” This comes after his predecessor, Andrew House, said in fall 2018 that portable gaming is not a big market. Kodera added that while PlayStation 4 and PS Vita are separate platforms, Sony is continuously looking for ways to offer unique game experiences. While he does not specifically mention “PlayStation 5”, Kodera reiterated that PlayStation 4 has entered the final stage of its life cycle and that Sony will spend the next three years “preparing for the future.”

Thanks, @SerkanToto (2, 3).

I still have my PS Vita. I think it's a great system that was never utilized correctly. The games are just lacking, but you do have some good ones.

Still a bit early to be entering the last stage though isn’t it? I reckon it should be at least ten years.

What would you want to see with a ps5? To be honest, more powerful and better graphics isn’t quite as exciting as it used to be

Other than better graphics, one things I want out of my PS5 is:

- bigger library of VR games
- ability to play 4K Blu-Ray
- backwards compatibility

I can't really think of anything else. Obviously the graphics will be better, but I don't know. The main reason for getting the next gen console is to get newly released games that won't be available on the previous gen.

Which is why I usually wait a year or two before buying a new gen console.

Yeah I reckon cheap VR will be the goer. This gen should have been the vr gen. But I’m not sure it really worked out.

Just hopefully next gen isn’t the data stealing generation

I've only just got myself a PS4 and will get all I can out of that first, before even thinking about a possible purchase of a V5.

It would be great if the next gen machine could play previous gen games but that's never gonna happen, a company isn't going to lose profits just to accommodate the 'nice' factor.

I would still be pissed off if Ps5 came out next year. I just bought a new Ps4 pro and I expect it to last me at least 2 years, and by last I mean be my primary console without a successor. The pro hasn't even gotten a price cut yet

PS4 VR still utilizes the move controllers from PS3, so I can see them keeping the same VR headset for PS5.

I think the VR games I really want to play on PSVR are:

- Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
- Creed: Rise to Glory- DOOM: VFR
- Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Are there any other ones I should look out for? The ones I've play so far are:

- Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul <-- my favorite one :)
- Batman: Arkham VR
- Job Simulator
- Skyrim VR
- Surgeon Simulator

Even if the PS5 were to come out next year, you'll still get good mileage out of your PS4Pro as most games in the first year are crossgen and the exclusives tend to not be worth buying a new console for. The PS4 didnt have its first must have game until arguably Bloodbourne in 2015 and even that was niche

Move is fairly old tech at this point. A new VR headset will likely be made around a new controller. I'd imagine they will also find a way to reduce the number of cables and connections bc that is a barrier to entry that keeps people from wanting to use their VR sets that they own

PS5 may not utilize the move controllers, but I think the current VR headset will still be compatible. I'm guessing they will release a new wireless version as well to avoid using so many cables.

A new controller is probably likely, but I think it would just be the same controller that will be used for standard PS5 games. The standard PS4 controller is used for some VR games as well.

I have a question for you guys.

Right now I own the original standard PS4 game console. My television is 4K SDR.

I was interested in getting the PS4 PRO, but my friend was telling me that it is not worth getting unless I buy a 4K HDR TV.

Would you agree with him on that one?

I was thinking of getting the PS4 Pro since it has 1TB of hard drive space and it could look better on my 4K television.

Another concern of mine is that the PS4 is starting to near the end of it's life cycle, which I believe is 2021? I don't want to invest $$$ into the PS4 Pro and then have the PS5 come out just a couple of years later.

What do you guys think, should I get the Pro?

Honestly if you're interested in more hard drive space I'd just buy a bigger hard drive, it's pretty easy to install, you can even buy kits that come with the hard drive, and some additional tools and tutorials to make it easier. It would be dramatically cheaper to just buy a 2 TB hard drive than to buy a Pro or Slim.

I'll probably end up doing that. Is there a recommended kit to choose from?

I used the OWC PS4 2TB kit if I recall correctly, it cost me 120 dollars, so it wasn't exactly as cheap as some of the other options, but I didn't want to take any chances and it's worked very well. Another option would be an external hard drive since the PS4 supports them now, even easier install, though the OWC kit should provide some tools to allow you to use your old hard drive as an external. I'd reccomend doing some research on them yourself to see what the best option is for you, since things may have changed since I bought mine.

I'm gonna want new hardware if it exists, I hate playing gimped versions of games. But that's true, Ps4's first big hit did not come until it's second year

The Dualshock 4 is limiting though. The Move is so much better in alot of the games Ive tried. I think there will be a new VR specific controller.

I like when the new console can play BC games to a better standard than the previous console.

Dualshock 5 might work well for VR, who knows? :)

I would love to see a historical one, like ancient Egypt or renaissance Italy

If PS5 doesn't play 4k blu ray I'm not going to bother. As it is, the only reason I bought PS4 Pro was for the new Spider-Man game.

I finally got my Pro hooked up to my 4K set with HDR even non pro enhanced games look decent but when I popped in a true pro enanced game (detroit become human) I was like :awesome:

So silly how the PS4 won't play 4K Blu-Ray. I'm sure the PS5 will have that functionality.
