No you don't have to pay to play which is the point of the system. Stuff you pay for is additional content, but isn't necessary. Of course some companies are better at it than others but paying for stuff is optional.

So what happens when not enough gamers pay? The game gets shut down, and the paying players get screwed.

I find in the vast majority of free to play games you almost always end up hitting a "wall", whether it's something like constrained inventory space or just overall game difficulty, the developer finds a way to hassle you in the game so you'll want to pay. Obviously you don't have to pay, otherwise they couldn't call it a free to play game, but more often than not the alternative is that the developer expects you to do a totally unreasonable amount of grinding to move on. And that sucks.

It seems to me that there's a certain subset players who really just don't seem to "get" free to play games. They see "free to play" and they think the game should be totally 100% free and they're offended that the developer even puts the option to pay for things in the game. There are definitely some good free to play games out there though. Few and far between as they may be. Unfortunately, I feel like most developers of free to play games, even the good ones, get the balance completely wrong, or worse still their entire approach to the business model may be rotten. God help you if your game itself sucks on top of having a bad business model.

For me personally, if I'm enjoying the game, I have zero problem throwing a couple of bucks at the game every once in a while. The way I see it, it's almost like a tip jar where you get something in return.

I haven't spent too much time with the F2P games. I have Warframe, Blacklight, and War Thunder, Which i havent tried yet. I really enjoy the gameplay of Warframe. Its kinda mass effect-ish. I'm not a huge fan of having to do a whole ton of grinding though. No matter what game it is.

right now, if I want to have fun with some online play, I turn Battlefield 4 on.

Sorry if this is being discussed elsewhere, but is there a firm release date for the PS TV?

The PlayStation 4 is struggling in Japan, according to figures released by analyst Media Create (via Eurogamer). Between June 23-29, the console only managed to shift 8,000 units, compared to the PS3's 8,500 and the Wii U's 10,000 units. Since its February 22 launch, the PS4 has sold a total of 620,000 units.

Anyone else find that weird? Japan is considered gaming central. I guess they are more into mobile and stuff now

Well the Vita is huge there, not really sure what games for PS4 are Japan only though but there has to be a few right?

Not really. Look at the library. Most of the big Japanese studios havent released games on the system yet. As much as we here in the west complain about the PS4's lacking library, it must be worse for a Japanese gamer as the games on the system are primarily geared for a Western audience

Vita is definetly doing better than the PS4 but I wouldnt say its huge. It also has a better library but thats to be expected given its age

Just a quick glance at this, it looks like the main Japanese centric games out now are Metal Gear, some Tecmo titles and Yakuza

I can understand why Sony hasn't focus on Japan as much so far. The US and Europe are more important than Japan. Japan only accounted for 12% of PS3's sales, while North America represented 34% and and Europ represented 39%. It makes more sense to cater to those territories, especially considering that Western video game companies have become technologically on even scale compared to Japan. Why immediately try to cater your one of your smaller demographics, especially considering that North America has the potential to be the their biggest market.

Where do I go to check out videos that my friends have uploaded on the PS4? Is that in the Share Factory?

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm still searching.

Japan is pretty much dead from a home console standpoint. It has been slowly happening since last gen, but with the launch of the Wii U and PS4, it's pretty much official. Japan's primary focus is handhelds and mobile.

There was a point that Japan was technologically superior especially considering that for the longest time the dominant consoles were Japanese consoles since the first Nintendo. But western technology finally caught up to the point at it managed to sway public interest away from Japan for the most part, with the Xbox consoles being the biggest examples of a console maker not doing too well in Japan, and yet being still successful.

Series like Halo, GTA, CoD, and Mass Effect with each release were slowly putting the nail in the coffin for Japanese gaming.

Wait until Bloodborn hits.. Sales in Japan will jump through the roof.

Or some stupid dating sim...

I don't get the crazy appeal over handheld systems now days. I lost interest in them around the time when Gameboy Advance was the big thing.

I would rather play a game that runs smoother and looks better coming from a console. Not to mention, it's annoying to have to stare at a small screen and ****ing up my back and or neck hunching over. I honestly don't get the appeal with the PS Vita.

Downloaded War Thunder and it has some cool aspects but overall I find it pretty boring and just meh,I guess I'll just be sticking with Blacklight and DC for a while,Planet 2 will be truly awesome but it might not come out till late this year and it's already been delayed a few times

For Japan, it's an issue of portability and space. There tends to be long commutes in the country and apartment spaces are generally small. Most people don't care about power as long as they like the games.

I get the appeal. Being able to take games anywhere with a controller unlike phones.

With that I'm in the same boat as Figs. I haven't had a handheld since the original Gameboy Advance. I'd like to get a PSVita, but I'd rather not have another device in my pocket (already have a Phone, wallet, 160GB Ipod), and I hate the prices of those memory cards.

They show up in the feed that says "What's New" when you log in. You just scroll over them and select them and they will play. I honestly don't see many people sharing videos though
