hey raven x knight, looks like microsoft will be increasing specs after all

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps4-more-powerful-than-xbox-one-but-microsoft-alwa/1100-6421940/

i hope sony follows suit.

raven x knight........lol ( but I guess I had that coming ).

yeah.........the article is a bit more nuanced than the headline suggests.

it didn't really say MS is boosting hardware specs ( such as changing the RAM or GPU ).

the dev just says that MS is continually improving with stuff like DX12.

however, in other articles that I've read, other devs have said that even with DX12 and freeing up the Kinect constraints, that's not going to magically overcome the X1's hardware "limitations."

no matter what, the X1 will always have slightly inferior hardware.

ya, you certainly did, lol

not sure wat you mean by nuanced pal... i wish my general vocab was better.

and your quotations on limitations is spot on, because the key word there is SLIGHTLY inferior hardware. when you compare both the xbone and the Ps4 to maximum PC, they're both together waaaay off from the top and in that sort of scale, they're basically the same (right?).
then why is yoshida being doubtful about it?

It's not that he doubts. It's that he isn't sure. But there is no reason not to.
Either someone at Microsoft or Square Enix (can't remember which) have already confirmed this is only a timed exclusive.

well, nuance means a small or subtle difference. When you say something is "nuanced," it usually means that you can't just look at something straightforward. it might have "hidden" meanings that you have to look deeper to perceive.

I'm not sure if that was the right word to use, though.

but basically, the point I was trying to make was that if you read the actual content of the article, it says MS is constantly improving the X1, but it didn't really say anything about adding better hardware. it's more about tweaking and optimizing the performance of the existing hardware specs.

sometimes, with articles, the headline will say one thing. But, if you read the actual article, you'll realize there's more to the article than what the headline suggests.

at a time like this it's either you're sure or you're not sure. I remember waaaay back after FXIII was announced multiplatform, after an uncertain amount of time later, rumors began circulating about FFVXIII and Sony cryptically said they don't know; 2 years later, it is announced multiplatform.

ah, I see. but was wat I said about the bigger picture accurate?

bigger picture........as in the X1/PS4 compared to a high end PC??

well, that's always gonna be true until the consoles match high end PCs. the consoles are always going to fall short spec and performance wise.

that being said, I think the consoles cater to a slightly different market than PCs. gamers who play on consoles usually are the type who don't want to spend a lot of money buying and building a high end gaming rig. or else they just prefer to sit on their couch or bed with a controller ( vs keyboard and mouse ).

and as for the consoles themselves, yeah, it's not like there's a huge drastic difference between the 2. the difference is slight.

but, while the average consumer probably couldn't tell much of a difference ( I'm sure I probably couldn't ), it does seem like there' enough of a difference for devs ( and not just one ) to comment on it.

The problem with gaming PC's, is the cost, and like any PC, they're very complicated, and as a result, will have all kinds of technical issues.

The more consoles become like PC's, the more problems they have.

and as a gamer, I don't want to deal with the costs and hassles.

I've certainly entertained the idea, but when I look at the cost to put together a gaming rig or a gaming laptop, I'm like......no thanks........lol.

and I prefer controller vs keyboard and mouse.

I think the Steam Machine will probably not do great at first, but that is where the future is heading. The difference between PC's and consoles is getting smaller, and smaller, and eventually, there will just be a box that wirelessly connects to your monitor and your television.

I think the next generation of video game consoles may be the last ones that use discs. Hell, we will probably get an Xbone and PS4 without disc drives in a few years. Mark my words.

yeah....the consoles are becoming more and more like PCs, especially with last gen (PS3 and 360), with the consoles having hdds themselves.

and if consoles ever go discless, then that would spell the end for stores like Gamestop and other brick and mortar game retailers.

they'd have to switch to an all online digital business model. and offer some kind of incentive for buying through them vs buying directly through the PSN or XBOX store.

the landscape will certainly change, that's for sure.

not sure if gamers will be totally ready for that............I mean, look at the X1's initial DRM concept and the backlash it received.

oh, and if games do eventually go all digital, they better come down in price a bit, since we're not paying for the physical media, shipping, etc.

I imagine they will. Steam has radically altered PC gaming, and it will continue to do so.

PS Now, and Xbox Gold have already made prices a lot more flexible. Combine that with the radical rate games depreciate at, and, really, the future might be surprisingly affordable.

Cutting out the "brick and mortar" businesses will also reduce prices.

And while it sucks for the folks losing their jobs, for the most part, good riddance IMO.

Whether he is sure or not doesn't change the fact that this is timed exclusive. If the people behind the game says it will be multi-plat, then it'll be multi-plat, regardless of what Yoshida thinks.

and yeah... Uncharted 4 is tentative proof that the slight difference... is actually significant.

well how do console become better/more advanced/upgraded while avoiding becoming like PC?

i'm not sure I would like that at all. I like having a collection of **** that I like, blu ray movies (I'm glad I didn't buy that many DVDs), Ps3 games, Ps4 game (eventually), even my old Ps2 and 1 games. They're there as a reminder that it was a huge part of my childhood. However, I can definitely see how these physical things just ultimately take up space which is a nuisance when there is a disembodied alternative.

timed exclusive that will then come out on PC, no doubt, but I'm not 100% that it will come out on Ps4.

cool avatar, btw.

The fundamental appeal of a console is that it is a simple, easily accessible machine that play games well. And it would be good for it to have some multimedia support as well (since that increases its value).

It's inevitable that gaming PC's will be able to do more. And that's okay. They cost twice as much, if not more, and they are user unfriendly.

Also, there was a time when games were designed for the console, with it in mind. In an odd way, though I never cared for it, the Wii might have been the best example of that. The Wii offered an experience you just couldn't get with a PC.

I would say this is Microsoft's biggest issue. They need to stop letting their games go to PC. Ryse is a prime example.

Thanks.
Given the history of Tomb Raider, and how well it sold on the PS3, I wouldn't doubt it coming to the PS4. Actually, not even for a second I think that this will be absent from the PS4. As for the game coming to PC, I wouldn't bet so vehemently.

I don't see why there wouldn't be a PC release though.

I really think Microsoft probably just got them to agree to delay the PS3 / PS4 release by a year. Or something like that.

yeah....I'd say you're correct. when compared to high end PCs, the PS4 and X1 are pretty close to each other.

and yeah......I wouldn't like it either if the industry moved to all digital. but, I guess I'd just have to adapt and change if that indeed happened.

or maybe the vanilla game is exclusive to the Xbox platforms, and then the PS platforms get it when the Definitive Edition comes out.

That's not unlikely.

and if the MS exclusive period is a year or whatever ( or even 6 months ), then at that point, you'd probably want to wait for the Definitive Edition to come out before you buy it...........lol.

not necessarily, people didn't really fully adapt to blu ray, hence why after 8 years on the market, blu ray is still being outsold by dvd (I think) granted it's just another physical format that is more expensive than DVD, but blu ray did not outright replace it.

that may be true......but Blu-Ray and DVD are essentially the same medium ( they're both physical discs ), just difference in quality and capabilities.

probably a better comparison would be the shift in trend from buying movies on physical discs ( like DVD and Blu-Ray ) vs streaming them online from sites like Netflix.

right now, as consumers, we have the choice of how to watch our movies ( either on physical discs or streaming ). just like, right now, we have a choice of how we buy our games ( physical vs digital ).

however, if a console ever came out with no disc drive to support physical discs, then we would be forced to switch to all digital to play the new games.

that would be like if they stopped putting movies out on DVDs and Blu-Rays and stopped making Blu- Ray and DVD players, and instead only streamed through sites like Netflix.

either scenario would represent a dramatic change in how we consume that particular media. we'd almost have no choice but to adapt and change.

Another example........look at video tapes/VHS. In the past, that was the medium of choice to put movies on for the home market. But, that has since been replaced by DVDs and Blu-Rays. They don't distribute movies on VHS anymore ( at least I'm pretty sure they don't ), so consumers have been forced to adapt and switch to DVDs and Blu-Rays or streaming to watch movies at home.

Now, I actually still use VHS tapes and a VCR to record stuff off of a TV at home. but, if they ever totally stop making blank VHS tapes and VCRs, then I'd have to adapt and move on to a different technology ( like DVR ) if I want to continue recording shows from my TV.

The point I'm making with all of this is that, when there's a drastic shift in technology, and one form gets phased out, then consumers almost have to adapt and change to the new technology if they want to keep enjoying the latest and greatest games, movies, etc.

you're a champ for still using a vcr and recording **** with it

and yeah, movies and games are two things very often compared as forms of entertainment but there are certain discrepancies. games require way more space than movies do, and this may be just one reason why the physical format will be alive at least with games.

other than that, i'd say you are spot on.
