not necessarily, people didn't really fully adapt to blu ray, hence why after 8 years on the market, blu ray is still being outsold by dvd (I think) granted it's just another physical format that is more expensive than DVD, but blu ray did not outright replace it.
that may be true......but Blu-Ray and DVD are essentially the same medium ( they're both physical discs ), just difference in quality and capabilities.
probably a better comparison would be the shift in trend from buying movies on physical discs ( like DVD and Blu-Ray ) vs streaming them online from sites like Netflix.
right now, as consumers, we have the choice of how to watch our movies ( either on physical discs or streaming ). just like, right now, we have a choice of how we buy our games ( physical vs digital ).
however, if a console ever came out with no disc drive to support physical discs, then we would be forced to switch to all digital to play the new games.
that would be like if they stopped putting movies out on DVDs and Blu-Rays and stopped making Blu- Ray and DVD players, and instead only streamed through sites like Netflix.
either scenario would represent a dramatic change in how we consume that particular media. we'd almost have no choice but to adapt and change.
Another example........look at video tapes/VHS. In the past, that was the medium of choice to put movies on for the home market. But, that has since been replaced by DVDs and Blu-Rays. They don't distribute movies on VHS anymore ( at least I'm pretty sure they don't ), so consumers have been forced to adapt and switch to DVDs and Blu-Rays or streaming to watch movies at home.
Now, I actually still use VHS tapes and a VCR to record stuff off of a TV at home. but, if they ever totally stop making blank VHS tapes and VCRs, then I'd have to adapt and move on to a different technology ( like DVR ) if I want to continue recording shows from my TV.
The point I'm making with all of this is that, when there's a drastic shift in technology, and one form gets phased out, then consumers almost have to adapt and change to the new technology if they want to keep enjoying the latest and greatest games, movies, etc.
