you're a champ for still using a vcr and recording **** with it

and yeah, movies and games are two things very often compared as forms of entertainment but there are certain discrepancies. games require way more space than movies do, and this may be just one reason why the physical format will be alive at least with games.

other than that, i'd say you are spot on.

yeah......like I said above, if gaming consoles are going to go all digital, then they're going to have to provide bigger drives to store all that stuff. and if the consoles are going to be discless, the drives will probably be like the solid state drives. and those are more expensive, I believe.

so, really, until the price of those drives comes down, and until it becomes cost effective for Sony/MS to put drives with 1 tb, 2 tb, or more, then we probably won't see the shift to all digital until then.

then why is yoshida being doubtful about it?

You're reading what he said in an extreme way. I wouldn't say that he's "doubtful". He can't say because it's not a thing yet obviously. There's a timed exclusive deal, so it's not like S-E is all over Sony about getting the PS4 version out at this point in time. They can't be, because there's probably a contract in place, hence the whole point of the dammed thing. Do you think Sony knew "for sure" that any timed exclusive game or content would come to their system? No, of course not. It's really a useless question, anyway, because no one is going to outright say that it's going to come to other platforms at this point. If that's the only thing that's going to satisfy, then you're just going to have to live in fear, I guess. We aren't going to know "for sure" until it's officially announced for the PS4. We can only assume based on past examples, common logic, and the vague use of language so far. I mean, I'm sure myself. There's no doubt in my mind that it'll happen.

I feel like the drives are big enough already. I mean, I have maybe 3 games installed at one time...but no more than that. After I finish a game and there's nothing else worth getting for it I just delete it...if I ever get the rare urge to play one again I just download it again.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I really can't see Sony supporting "MKV" files.

Between their Blu-ray royalties, Sony Pictures and Aniplex, that's just bad for business.

So, at best, we might see limited file support (mp4, wmv and avi). And maybe not even all those files types.

Supporting MKV files was an obvious swipe at Sony by Microsoft.

You keep saying that but I don't see why that would be the case considering Sony makes HDTVs that support MKV

Do those HDTV's have a built in blu-ray player designed to play blu-rays?

I'm actually not aware of any Sony TV's that support them, but I don't have much experience with Sony smart TVs.

No, they don't have a built in BRP.

Its not limited to their Smart TVs. Pretty much all Sony TVs manufactured today have native MKV support

Why do you consider MKV to be such a special case? I really don't get what separates that from any of the other file types you posted.

That seems... odd. Actually, now I'm kind of curious to test it out.

Ah, I see. Well, I mean, technically though aren't they are potentially pirateable formats? I don't see much point to supporting one over the others, honestly. If you're going to do it, you might as well push it all the way like MS did.

Here's their current line of TVs. If you check the specification on any of them you will see a long list of supported formats and sure enough MKV is one of them

The PS3 and 360 did not support it. It's basically the pirate file type of choice.

Also particularly for anime.
Both support MP4 and pretty much everything is in MP4

True, but MKV has – for a number of reasons – become the format of choice. So if you already have a decent pirated collection, or plan to pirate in the future, that's most likely the file you will find whatever you're looking for in. It used to be "AVI", but that's gone completely out of style.

It's actually quite a hassle to convert file types.

Not really. I know for the PS3, there was actually a program called mk2vob that made it as simple as possible. Theres also media servers that transcode that for streaming without the need for actual conversion

Reading about it, I think you and I may disagree as to what constitutes a hassle.

the upside to the X1 getting Media Playback in the next few days is that maybe, MAYBE that will finally force Sony's hand to act sooner rather than later.

Honestly, I wonder if Sony really cares that much. They have a sizable lead at this point, and I kind of have doubts that most people give a **** about this stuff, at least as much as some of you guys do. I know the 3D Blu-ray thing happened, but I do wonder if that's a coincidence. I assume these patches actually do take time and it's not feasible to just make me purely as a kneejerk reaction (though I say this without any real technical knowledge of how it works). Could be the two were just thinking of the same thing at the same time. Guess this'll be a good test.

the 3D Blu-ray support was so "out of the blue" (........pun intended) that it definitely felt like a case of "one upping" the X1 on that feature.

I know it seemed that way, but what I'm saying is that they could've had it in the pipeline and the timelines just happened to coincide. It's not like these updates are always details months away of time, and the 3D blu-ray thing is fairly niche really. I'm not saying for sure, but coincidences like that happen from time to time. If there's another sudden update like that with media features, though, it probably was.

It was a coincidence. It didn't happen simply bc MS did it. They announced the firmware update like 2 days after MS. It would take weeks for that stuff to be put together and tested through their QA process. New features cant be added at a flip of a dime.

3D Blu-ray is a good positive for me even though I don't watch in 3D at the moment. Most of the blu-rays I've bought have been 3D for when I upgrade TV or projector.

Well, I don't know if the Xbone will force their hand, but Sony really needs to put some kind of media playback on the PS4. Even if it's just what the PS3 had.

They can't just ignore that forever. It just makes the PS4 seem rather... limited otherwise. Even if it's just mp3s and mp4s.

whether or not it's coincidence or not, the reality is that the PS4 is slower to add new features compared to the X1.

and now, the X1 can legit claim it offers a feature ( and an often requested one ) that the PS4 doesn't.

just like once the price of 4KTVs comes down (which they actually are) no one's going to care about em, but that's going to be the new standard.

I'm surprised he did not even know that TR was gonna be exclusive... I would think when 3rd party developers get an offer like that when there was no prior history of exclusivity on said console, they'd reach out to the other side and say... hey, this is happening, do you wanna say/do something about it? before it actually happens. it's actually kinda uncool to me.

I feel like the drives are big enough already. I mean, I have maybe 3 games installed at one time...but no more than that. After I finish a game and there's nothing else worth getting for it I just delete it...if I ever get the rare urge to play one again I just download it again.
maybe you don't really put many games on your HD and buy most games in blu ray. coz some people got like tons of games on their HD, you know. and they want that extra room for cosmetic **** like pictures and music and movies and what not. but I agree with you, I think 500GB alone is a lot.

The PS3 and 360 did not support it. It's basically the pirate file type of choice.

i'm pretty sure Ps3 supported MKV. So if Ps4 never does, that's another step back.

Not really. I know for the PS3, there was actually a program called mk2vob that made it as simple as possible. Theres also media servers that transcode that for streaming without the need for actual conversion
the fact that movie files are huge to convert makes it a hassle alone in my opinion, even if there is a convenient program to do it

Reading about it, I think you and I may disagree as to what constitutes a hassle.
I think so too

their lead isn't sizable; it's easily over doable. has the brolic august update been released already?

has the brolic August update been released & it's disappointingly lacking?

The Xbone has always had more features than the Ps4 since launch.

With this, and the reason DDOS hack (have even seen the end of that yet?), the announcement of TR, the SO bundle, the COD bundle and the Halo collection which will likely have a bundle as well, I believe the Ps4's reign of supremacy will very soon be coming to an end.
