The Official Superman Score & Soundtrack Thread - Part 1

I think MOS will just have a regular orchestral score, free of pop music and hard rock samples. But it does need a strong, memorable theme. If Snyder doesn't want the Williams theme, they can always use the Shirley Walker theme from the animated series...

How about something that belongs to this franchise?

Upon further investigation, I think this is Tyler Bate's job to lose

It better not be the generic MV/RC sound design rubbish but an actual music score by composer(s) that know what they're doing. And want the film to benefit from it's score very much.

Im not endorsing this guy to do the film's soundtrack or anything; I dont even know who he is, but I was just searching for people who may have done their version of a Superman theme on YT when I came across this. Sounds like something that can be played in the background with young Clark flying or something.

I also like how this guy titles his music.

Emoticons are your friends on these boards. :yay:

There are about 5 seconds (00:52-57) in there that sound very, very much like one of themes from Zimmer's "Lion King" score (see "This Land" and "King of Pride Rock").

I think at this point, originality, is something I can overlook.

Not that I'm endorsing plagirism or anything.

Why would Bates necessarily be Snyder's (first) choice?

Anyways, David Hirschfelder composed the music for Legend of the Guardians, so I guess he'd be a likely choice if they want more polished.

Tyler Bates typically tends towards the generic side of things in his music. His 300 score is a generic version of a Zimmer score basically. His Conan score is apallingly bad compared to Basil Poledouris' wondrous score - I know no one could ever top Poledouris' score but Bates didn't even try. I suspect if Bates does it and MOS has a main theme it will be subdued and nothing as overt as what Williams gave us. The focus will be on the action sequence material.

I'm an avid soundtrack collector and I have to say while I have a broad taste in music Bate's scores are among my least favorite. They don't often follow leitmotifs or thematic material (which Superman pretty much has to have) and often are very generic action scores that aren't memorable. They are the fast food of soundtracks.

But I'd love for Bate's to prove me wrong this time.

On a sidenote, James Horner might score The Amazing Spiderman. Pretty bold and interesting choice.
Maybe MOS needs an old veteran as well.

He needs to redeem himself. I'd like to see him try, hehe.

Not just that, but he used "Titus Victorious" and "Finale" from Elliot Goldenthal's Titus in 300. Goldenthal's lawyers stepped in and so WB had to pay damages -- it's actually acknowledged on the website.

Bates' Conan score is inoffensive -- from the start people knew it was going to be a brand-new movie and that Bates wouldn't use any Pouledoris material for the reboot.

Please a lover's quarrel doesn't besmirch reputations like that... :o

Someone may be screwing with Imdb again, but John Williams is listed as the composer of MOS...not that I would be against it.

"Warrior" had a good soundtrack, it was exciting and still new. I wouldn't be opposed to something similar used for Superman as long as it was bigger and much more dramatic. I think whoever writes it will probably do a good job because there will be pressure to come up with something original. There will be pressure to out-do the John Williams theme. Whether they want to admit it or not, any composer sitting trying to come up with something original for Superman will think of the John Williams theme. To out-do it, they will probably want to have a tune that is as exciting but takes itself more seriously and is probably faster,, or more violence, or whatever you want to call it and more dramatic, bigger, grander.

Howard and Zimmer were asked to no end if they were eventually do a more Elfman-esque score for Batman. Elfman was never "out-done" by them. nevertheless they did a good job and all what the movies required.
