Superman/Batman #75 Preview

He's right, actually. The Death of Superman is a great story. And it is best read in all 3 parts:

Part 1: Lex Luthor, Hero
Part 2: Luthor's Super-Bodyguard
Part 3: The Death of Superman

http://www.studiosanning.shawbiz.ca/superman_family/chronology/superman/sm149/index.htm

All from the guy who, you know, created the character.

The 1993 version is pretty good for a Post-Crisis story. At least Superman went out heroically.

All that in a single comic. It's almost crazy thinking how decompressed comics have come. I'm looking forward to reading that when I get Showcase Present Volume 3

I wouldn't call The Death of Superman a particularly amazing comic, but I liked it. The other two parts, too. I mean, taken out of the context of the big shock death (which was not '90s-ish at all, considering they still do that s*** today), it was a decent, cohesive story that illustrated pretty effectively how important Superman is within the DC universe. I kind of want to reread the whole thing now.

So I FINALLY read Superman #701, while at an airport bookstore, of all places. I'm very...torn about it, and the direction of the story. On one hand, I thought the art was pretty good (although I'm certainly not a fan of the Batman-esque way the cape drapes over the shoulders), and the dialogue and general pacing was fine.

What I didn't like is where this story is going. I still feel it's unnecessary, and will end up coming off as trite and [potentially] boring. We'll see.

I'm looking forward to JMS's Superman Earth One much more.

It was a good story but Doomsday was a pretty poor villain

Perhaps if Doomsday had not been defeated and had become a regular character in Supes Rogues Gallery he would be a stronger character.

It would be interesting because Superman would have some everlasting vendetta against the creature who killed him. Though, given Doomsday's purpose (destroying everything) if he did stick around, he would have left the books eventually.

He served his purpose. I'd argue that his follow-up appearances were far worse, given that they weakened his status as the Superman-killer, since he became weaker and weaker and Superman beat him over and over again. The only good use of him after The Death of Superman was in Our Worlds at War, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, seems to be a lot of people are torn on it, though most agree it was at least decent, even if they thought the direction was wonky.

what the hell do you people mean? Anubis, how do u know how many books I've read? I own over 500 single issue stories and well over 100 trade paperbacks

Then you must have the Chuck Austen collection cuz Death of Superman was okay at best.

"The Austen Collection." The only comic collection that actually rises in value as the condition of its issues falls, since destroying them is a gift to mankind. :awesome:

The world will be a better place without The Draco in it:awesome:

Doomsday should have never "comeback" after Death Of Superman.

It's funny you say that, since DD does keep coming back on a semi-regular basis, but it doesn't make him any stronger of a character. The whole idea of Superman having an everlasting vendetta against DD is sort of there, but it's still stupid, considering the fact that Doomsday isn't really a character at all. He is literally a walking plot device. It's like saying that Superman has an everlasting vendetta against kryptonite.

Kryptonite in general isn't really all that of a threat. It never f**king works, I don't even know why they bother. The only thing that did was getting somebody as strong as he is to beat him to death.

I think Superman only pretends Kryptonite affects him

Green Kryptonite lulls crooks like Luthor into thinking they can kill him with rocks

Red Kryptonite gives him an excuse to be a dick to his friends

Gold Kryptonite gives him an excuse to be lazy

And Pink Kryptonite gave him an excuse to explore his bi-curious feelings toward Jimmy Olsen

I am not making that last one up:awesome:

He means well and exploring Superman's social conscience is way overdue. The quality of his results are all over the place, however. A for effort no doubt though.

the actual death of superman issue (superman 75?) was pretty awesome. the year long story arc as a whole was a mixed bag....but overall i enjoyed it.

At the end of the day, it gave us Steel and Superboy, so I can never really hate The Death of Superman and its associated mega-arc.

Understanding the position that the writers were in also gives it some leeway in the quality department of its storytelling, I think. They originally had the story of Clark and Lois' marriage all mapped out and ready to go, only for the Lois and Clark show to tell them that they couldn't do the wedding until it was done in the show, which was probably going to be a couple seasons away at that time. That had to suck major balls for the writers, plus the fact that they now had to start from scratch and map out more than a year's worth of new stories on relatively short notice.

Overall, I liked The Death of Superman as a quick and entertaining read, knowing that the actual story part of the saga only comes up after Clark kicks the bucket.

I agree I actually liked the ending to the book although I don't think it was as good as Birthright it was still good. Then again though Birthright was suppose to be the start of DC Ultimate line so I guess I liked it more because it left the world more open to play with before DC merged it into the mainstream.
