Just watched the Blu-Ray.
I saw this twice in theaters back in early June.... Man, I forgot how damn enjoyable it was. And I have to say, I enjoyed it maybe more this time. I had some VERY bad crowds both times I saw it. I just really dug it this time around, more so than last time. It's a lot like X2: X-men United in some respects, but at the same time, vastly different...but still convincingly in the same world. It's NARROWLY behind X2, for me, as the best X-men film.
The running time SPEEDS by. The only character I really don't like is Havok. I just don't like Till as an actor, he comes across more like a ***** than as a believable tough guy. Constantly with the cut-off sleeves, when he's actually a skinny guy, hunching over when we first meet him trying to flex in the cell, etc.... I just didn't and still don't care for him or his delivery of most lines....
The rest of the cast...I love. Mainly Fassbender and McAvoy. Just brilliant, brilliant stuff here. Oliver Platt is likable, Byrne, Holt and Caleb Jones are all really great with what they have. I found myself really liking Jones in his exchanges with Erik and Hank in terms of his flight training...funny stuff. I also liked Gathegi as Darwin. This is a character in the comics I couldn't care less about, but I liked his character in this film...honorable and courageous. Of course, Bacon was great as well.
I also love that this movie (aside from Cyclops shooting skeet in X-men) we see the students actually being TRAINED by Xavier and taught about their powers (not in a classroom). It was great stuff, however brief. Because at it's heart, that was always one of the most interesting parts of the X-men Books was seeing these kids deal with and learn to control their powers....
And the ending...the SCORE (the Score is AMAZING) just jacks me up to 10 for a sequel with the X-men squaring off against the brotherhood and the conflict that causes in Xavier going against his old friend. Maybe it's time to see some sentinels introduced?
So many possibilities. It could take place in the late 60's, early 70's, or mid-to-late 70s and introduce Cyclops and Jean Grey....
I can't wait.
