Days of Future Past The Official X-Men: First Class Rate and Review Thread

This is one aspect of critics reviews that tends to bug me(especially geek-press types..which are all that are doing reviewing for this film so far); the need to compare movies with other movies, especially one's that aren't even in the same franchise. We don't all monolithicly agree the same movies are bad or good so I wish they'd stop stating their opinions on measuring different films against each other as if they're facts. Saying this movie tops 'Movie XYZ' only is useful if you already agree with the reviewer's take on 'Movie XYZ' in the first place.

I mind less the comparisons to other films IN THIS SAME FRANCHISE..which is more legit. But enough with comparing it to every other comic book movie under the sun.

Yes indeed. But even comparing against other X-Men films is subjective. I've already been asked by a friend to rank all the X-Men films and i feel reluctant to do that because my ranking is personal to me.

I don't actually know how I'd rank the movies anyway. I'd need to rewatch all of them together.

The Bond reference is not a reference to quality so much as explaining how it's trying to capture a certain aesthetic. And just about anyone could already see the heavy Bond influence just from the trailers.

And Vaughn saying that is just trying to explain where he's coming from as a filmmaker to the audience.

My critique was about the geek-press needing to always say "It's as good/less good/better than this other unrelated film that just happens to be in the same genre".

But it was more than on that aesthetic level; it's even been said that X-Men did what Casino Royale did for the flagging franchise - revival. That's what I was referring to.

Fine, my only point was that geek-press types feeling the need to slip their rankings into a review is irritating and really has no place in a professional review.

And they do this all the time. It's nails-on-a-chalkboard to me.

I'm nervous! We're gonna have to get a bad review eventually.

So does it open with a similar fashion with a voice-over and Cerebro's doors closing? Probably not right?

I'm going to be reviewing all four X-Men films over the next week, culminating in my First Class review (which I might be able to have up slightly before release)

I figure if anyone's interested in a Hypster's opinion, it's you guys. Here's my review of the first film, 2000's X-Men:

3.5/4
Regardless of its flaws, X-Men remains close to my heart along with the original Spider-Man film. Neither are the best of what the genre has to offer, but they represent the beginning of a sustained wave of quality movies. In fact, if there’s one thing Marvel’s latest offerings have lacked it’s substance; something X-Men is bursting at the seams with. Although the action lacks energy, there are moments throughout the film with dialogue that’s almost poetic. These kinds of moments provide a feeling of gravity that consistently leave me engrossed on the edge of my seat. While I can’t speak for the biggest fans out there, as far as I’m concerned this is an effective adaptation and a very good first installment that acted as a much needed defibrillator to the heart of one of my favourite genres.

Higher than 4 or 5?

How much higher is there than 5 out of 5????

it got a 3 earlier and I was expecting the scores to be closer to 5 than 4. Right now the vast majority of them are 4. So yeah, there is room for better scores.

Well, no film can be utterly perfect and with so many comic book movies around, people are expecting more and looking at them much more closely...

and yet this is actually one of the few superhero movies that actually delivers more (by the sounds of it) yet I still don't think it will have the scores of spider man 2, iron man or the dark knight for reasons that elude me.

Holy crap! The movie is getting great reviews! I did not see this coming! I'm so glad that First Class hits Finland next week. That offers at least some condolence because Captain America doesn't premiere here until late August :cmad:

This reviews are fantastic. I wonder if I'll feel the same way about Singer's X films after viewing First Class.

For me, I've always looked at this film as the prequel to Singer's two films. But from the sounds of it, Singer's X films might be a thing of past (an important step in the evolution of the genre) and this is the first, true X-Men film that's tapped it's full potential.

I love my beloved X2 but if it's time to pass the torch, so be it.

4 is very good. Which reviewer gave it a 3?

We should be grateful that it's not mediocre. It will be well worth the money to spend to watch it. No need to blow it up more than it is. Once you see it, you can decide for yourself if it's better than anything else.

Armond White is a given. I'm just waiting for A.O. Scott's review knowing he will hate it. :o

SciFiNow. They also gave Thor a 3.

http://www.scifinow.co.uk/reviews/r...w&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitterfeed this was a 3 stars review and I'm not in a position to be grateful about it not turning out mediocre since that was never a possibility as far as I was concerned

I just want this to rival the big CBMs in terms of score as I am sure it will be better (at least for me anyway :) )

SciFiNow. They also gave Thor a 3.

but this isn't thor (a popcorn flick of a CBM)

I'm curious how the scores will vary once it will be released in the us. Thor was phenomenally rated at launch and then it dropped like a rock.

I was expecting higher scores to be honest :(
The reviews are wonderful, but somehow it seems some critics won't allow themselves to give it a 5/5 score so First Class won't achieve TDKs status of "the CBM all the other CBMs should bow down to". :o
Eventually this will change, if the second movies keeps the same level of quality of this one. :)
