http://www.scifinow.co.uk/reviews/r...w&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitterfeed this was a 3 stars review and I'm not in a position to be grateful about it not turning out mediocre since that was never a possibility as far as I was concerned

I just want this to rival the big CBMs in terms of score as I am sure it will be better (at least for me anyway :) )

but this isn't thor (a popcorn flick of a CBM)

I'm curious how the scores will vary once it will be released in the us. Thor was phenomenally rated at launch and then it dropped like a rock.

I wouldn't get too worked up over stuff like RT scores. It ain't worth it. And I'd stack Thor up against any X-Men movie to date, easily. They're ALL popcorn movies. Unless it's something like maybe Unbreakable, ALL superhero films are.

That 3 star review is 3/4... not 3/5...

The reviews are wonderful, but somehow it seems some critics won't allow themselves to give it a 5/5 score so First Class won't achieve TDKs status of "the CBM all the other CBMs should bow down to". :o
Eventually this will change, if the second movies keeps the same level of quality of this one. :)

They aren't bowing down anyway, nor should they.

then that's piss poor usability on their part. the star rating is usually done on a 1-5 scale.

Sure, they're all popcorn flicks but this seems to be more of a drama than any of the previous ones (and thor too), the kind of movie that packs more of an emotional punch than most blockbusters.

You've never heard of a film getting "FOUR STARS!!!"?

Most professional reviews use 1-4 scale rating system. Its the smaller critics/blogs that use the 1-5 and 1-10 scale.

The newspaper here uses 4 stars. Some people give it an A-F rating, some use a 10 scale, etc.

In other words, geek-press.

Yeah, Entertainment Weekly uses the alphabet.

I usually prefer critics who don't use ratings at all. Just a "I liked it/I didn't like it".

Naturally they aren't mentioning TDK or anything, but some things get stucked in our collective memories - "Citzen Kane" being the best movie of all time, "Apocalypse Now" being the best Vietnam war movie of all time and TDK being the best CBM of all time. Some agree with that notion and some disagree, but in general people are extra careful to challenge the status-quo.

Hence the guy who changed his review. It was a 4/5 at first because he was extra-careful not to appear overly enthusiastic regarding a movie that has been deemed a potentail failure for so long, but then he went "what the hell, it's a wonderful film, why can't I just admit it" and gave it a 5/5. :woot:

That's generally why I like Rotten Tomatoes. Unpopular opinion, I know. But, I like just simply being able to see who liked it, and who didn't.

sure, but they do what normal people would do: make the reader aware of it

like

***O
would signify a 3 out of 4 while

*** signifies 3 out of .... take a guess

please, nolan is regarded as a god by a lot of people and his 2 movies are nothing short but miracles, unreaachable ideals for mere mortal CBM directors

I would say those are more stuck in the critics collective memories than elsewhere. And they only speak for themselves.

A lot of people doesn't even come close to meaning ALL. There are lots of people who disagree.

I still think RT has a tendancy to succumb to 'group think' or gestalt.

At best it's an imperfect tool that should not be the only thing one uses, IMO.

This reviews are fantastic. I wonder if I'll feel the same way about Singer's X films after viewing First Class.

For me, I've always looked at this film as the prequel to Singer's two films. But from the sounds of it, Singer's X films might be a thing of past (an important step in the evolution of the genre) and this is the first, true X-Men film that's tapped it's full potential.

I love my beloved X2 but if it's time to pass the torch, so be it.

First Class Is defently Prequel to Singer's films. Will there be libierties taken?
Of course.Reboots don't have connection to past films(which IS why It was stupid to keep Judi Dench on as M In The Danial Craig Bond contunity) Star Trek was alternate hsitory created from time travel.

Bryan Singer as story writer and Producer, the entire marketing campagin,
and the fact X4 Is still being discussed means this Is not a reboot.

The fact 1 and possibly 2 actors from earlier films and the fact Matthew vaughn has discussed flashforward In sequel with Patrick Stewart and Ian
Mckellan means First Class Is more or less In Contunity with X-Men and X2.

First Class may very well become some's favorate X film.

If matthew Vaughn and Singer have done their job X-Men could become what
Marvel Studios Is doing with the Avengers(They really should be called Avengers Studios) and have shared universe.First Class trilogy.Deadpool.
The Wolverine(No connection to X-Men Origins:Wolverine) X4/X5(Although they would almost certainly Ignore the last Stand)

Holy Christ. I did not expect this love. I came to these boards for X3 and I can't believe we may finally get something that lives up to X1 and X2's promise. That said, I do wonder if the sub-par entries in the saga will hurt its performance. Its time for Fox to go on the media blitz with this. They haven't had a tentpole critical winner in years that I can remember.

Its just a pity that Cyclops is MIA.

One of the reason I hate pretentious movies is because people like to say they are "more than a CBM", thus suggesting that CBM by their very nature are lowbrow. There is nothing wrong with fun entertaining 'popcorn' movies as long as they have good acting, dialogue, characterisations, plot, etc.

And there is no reason a comic book movie must automatically be 'popcorn' movies. Nothing wrong with going for entertainment and nothing wrong for achieving even more.

And there will never be an unanimous consent (nor should there be one) but as far as the majority is concerned (regular movie goers or critics nolan's movies are at the top of the pyramid)

Even that's arguable.
