Don't mess with the Bamf c-saw, the man has left cyber lumps on my head a few times from the swing of his mighty ban hammer!

As an outsider to these boards I'll try to answer without setting myself up to be flamed.
I think some people just have a bad taste left in their mouth by the last 2 x-men movies, and Fox's approach in general.

Thor came out and did phenomenal and I think as a result people have even more confidence now that Captain America will be good, Marvel Studios has earned the trust of the audiences.
.

Thor did not do phenomenal. Most people think it was a fun romp and nothing else, not reinventing the wheel creatively. And the box office has been disappointing. It cost 150 mill and made 162 mill domestic only so far.

Saw this on twitter!

"Let's compare this TDK was 17-0 until it got it's first bad review and first class is 20-0 and hasn't gotten a bad review yet!!"

yet I'm pretty sure thor was better than both though and we all know it dropped like a rock afterwards.

Also, I'm pretty sure TDk received better scores in its initial 17 reviews

I wasn't exactly directing my insults towards anyone in particular. I just stated my point and made arguments for it. Anyway that's besides the topic.

The overall praise for XMFC has been stronger than that of Thor. While it was getting positive reviews, they weren't glowing. XMFC has been getting very legitimate praise. I could see it challenging TDK, Iron Man, and SM2 when all is said and done.

I meant phenomenal in the way it was received compared to what people initially expect from such an outlandish concept. It could of gone wrong on so many levels and turned out pretty satisfying.

I admit it isn't top tier material because it was very safe, but it was quite good, on par with The Incredible Hulk moreso than Iron Man or X2.

It's grossed 411 million so far, more than enough to justify a sequel.

Ok, so for the fun of it I decided to look at the scores for the most acclaimed superhero movies and it looks like this on RT

Iron Man - 7.6 (94%)
Spider-Man - 7.6 (89%)
Batman Begins - 7.7 (84%)
X-Men - 7.0 (82%)

Spider-Man 2 - 8.2 (93%)
The Dark Knight - 8.4 (94%)
X2: X-Men United - 7.4 (88%)

Now, if first class will beat the first group than I don't see why a sequel made by the same people and with a more generous timeframe wouldn't be able to top the second group (the sequels) too.

It’s best to get the Batman Begins comparisons out of the way because, as adept as Christopher Nolan’s film was in reviving a tired franchise, the bar for reboots has been just been raised by Matthew Vaughn and co. Stylish, superbly written and with a winning mesh of action and emotion, X-Men: First Class isn’t just the best Marvel-related movie in years; it’s one of the best films of 2011.

I love that. That people don't say "one of the best action films" or "it will probably be the best superhero film"... reviews have said it's "one of the best films of the year." And if my math is correct, we're about halfway through the year.

I'm not going to lie, I might rage a little once Armond White throws this all off with his negative review.

Dang troll.

He's gonna talk about how X-Men: First Class plays into commercialism and is borderline racist or some ****.

Oh God, I was just thinking he'd tapered off and died. Or at least been banned from RT.

Someone should send him some chocolates.

That's exactly what's going to happen. :(

I seriously don't know why RT/NewsCorp hasn't exiled his ass from their site.

I'll chip in five bucks for the candy pool if we can get the fart to give it a fair review.

Nah, his bad reviews are a 'seal of approval' of sorts.

I was really skeptical of this movie when I first heard of it. I loved the first three X-Men films, and was let down when the franchise started doing prequels after the trilogy that could have easily kept going. Wolverine was terrible, and I've never been so let down for a movie before. Then when news came that another prequel was being made, First Class, I was not fond of the idea at all. I was comforted by the director, and Singer being involved, but I was still just not a fan of the idea. However, now, after seeing the trailers, and finding out that this movie focuses on the emotional side more rather than mindless action, I have a feeling this is going to be the movie that takes me by surprise this year. There's always one film each summer that does that. We shall see in a few days...

VERY favorable review at Dark Horizons, basically saying this film kicks the asses of all Marvel Studios adaptations.

It's not without a few issues, and I'm not sure how much love this will get from a mainstream audience. Yet Fox have essentially taken Marvel Studios on at their own game and thoroughly whipped their ass at it, leaving behind what already looks to be one of the best major studio tentpoles of the year. If audiences can embrace the three previous best Marvel films (X2, Iron Man, Spider-Man 2), then I hope they will do the same here. If this is what Vaughn and co. can do with a first film, bring on the sequel right away.
