The Old Official Superman Casting Thread

Hey, I didn't say that I had all of the answers... I just would want to make it clear to the audience that it's a new continuity, versus Singer's method of... "hey, uh... just remember some of the stuff and forget some of the other stuff. What? You want to know which stuff is still canon? Umm... well, ya know... the thing with him wearing a big red S. Oh, and uh... Marlon Brando. Yep. Brando. He's still Jor-El."

How do you make an origin film greater than Donner's Superman?
It's not impossible. It was great for back in the day, but modern audiences aren't exactly interested in the Donner film any more.

We need a modern retelling of the Superman story, one that can be fully embraced just as much as Donner's was.

Donner's Superman is out dated, and the origin is about due for an update. STM is not the sacred cow that people make it out to be.

but there has allready be un update, and sorry, but it's called Smallville.
I'm sorry, but after superman 1, Smallville and the animated serie, how would people be interested by another origin story ?

It has been done to death.

Smallville is horribly done, and has a very limited viewing audience compared to a major tentpole film.

As far as the regular joe is concerned, the only modern origin they've seen is the small flashback in SR.

That and Birthright and Superman for all seasons. A mix of all 3 would be great. Add Brainiac and we shall have a lot of fun!

For Lex Luthor, I believe that Jason Isaacs would be incredible.

Zooey Deschanel would be a great Lois Lane, too.

I think that for a first film especially if it is an origin film, Lex should be the only villain. Just make him much more grander than Donner's Lex. Add LexCorp into the mix. The amount of technology Lex has the ability to tap into. Make him untouchable and far more intelligent.

But should they even revisit krypton? I guess if Brainiac is the villian, sure...

But if they're going for a complete revamp, why not just open up in Smallville with Kal-Els ship crash landing?

We don't necessarily have to revisit krypton/Jor-EL, etc.

Why not just open up with the Kents finding Baby Kal and take off from there?

Sure, you could do that. But you also miss a great opportunity to showcase a NEW Krypton. The possibilities are limitless for what they could do there. I mean, just imagining a big-scale version of Jor-El's STAS story would be amazing to see.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
why. how can it be that there is a superman fan out there that thinks like that.

please dont act like this will be the first superman movie. this is 2008. in 2006 i got only LEX. even if it is a reboot there needs to be a supervillain. the people are the same.

Supes should fight an alien villian...Lex should just have a cameo-eske appearance. LexCorp should definately have a presence in the first movie but that doesn't necessarily mean that Lex should be big heavy. He could try and manipulate the primary villian but quite frankly he should take second seat to Brainiac, Darkseid, etc.

...at least in the first film.

He could very well just be an observer during the first film who becomes a much bigger threat in the sequel.

That's a good point. However for me, i'm much more interested in just getting to the meat of the story, Clark, Lois, Lex, Metropolis, Daily Planet, etc.

I guess just as a fanboy, i'm pretty jaded with the origin story of Supes. Cuz if we have to explore Krypton again, that means we have to explore the FOS, Jor-EL, his powers, etc. for me its far too much filler when I just want to get to Supes throwing down and saving lives.

If anything, it can be hinted upon in this one and more fully explored in a sequel?

Oh and another MUST for this Superman revamp...

KEEP JONATHAN KENT ALIVE!!! AND MAKE HIS PARENTS A SIGNIFICANT PART OF CLARKS ADULT LIFE!

I'd love this.

Think about it this way though. The Lex that we've seen was just an ordinary dude motivated by real estate.

A corporate Lex with the tools that give him the ability to fight Superman in multiple ways can give him enough to combat Superman without the need of Brainiac, Metallo, etc.

I think Lex alone would be good for an first origin film. Add more villains later on in a sequel.

A great suggestion I've read is to explore Krypton and it's origins throughout the franchise. So the audience learns about Clark's past, in conjunction with the character on the film. It'd be like a shared journey of sorts.

For the reboot though, I definitely think some time should be spent on cementing Clark's early life in Smallville and especially with the Kents.

Agreed. I'd have absolutely no qualms about Luthor being the primary villain again, given that we get a corporate monger with strong and powerful connections. As long as Luthor concocts plans that lead to Superman actually having full-on fights, then that is all that's needed. Despite sharing the same name, it'd be like having a completely new villain anyway.

Jackpot.

I'd definately be up for that...especially the second point.

I think they should take a cue from Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Start from the very basic beginnings . Put a different spin on the familar story or add to it.

* Show how Brainac helped in the destruction of Kypton , and in a sequel revisist it
* Show Clark travelling around the world
*Make the Daily Planet a struggle paper past it's prime and the arrival of Superman catapolts it into the major paper it becomes
* Have Lois be skeptic of Superman for much of the film and have him earn her trust
*No romance between Lois and Clark/Superman for this film. Develop that over the next two films
*Have Jimmy Olsen be strictly a copy boy. Maybe Perry White isn't even the Editor yet but becomes editor of the DP at the end
* Lois be considered a lightweight in the newsroom. At the end she can become the famous Lois Lane that Metropolis
*Have Lex be a supporting character much like on Smallville not the mainvillian. Build and unravel his character through out the first two films
* Find new ways of explaining the little things like the reason for the Glasses, Clark's different persona in Metropolis etc.
* Make Metallo and Intergang the villians . I agree with this idea.

Another pic of Trucco just because I'm tired of seeing the same head shot over and over.

Hell yeah. I've been pushing Trucco as Supes forever.
I've always liked Paul Johansson as a "Kingdom Come" Superman:

Love Johansson, but he's too good as a villain to play Superman.

I could see him as Black Adam in a Captain Marvel movie, though.

I dont like that. You made some good points there, but Lois being a skeptic of Superman sounds a little too much like SR. Gimme classic Lois.

I say Luthor and Brainiac together in the first film

It would be like my script:

Act 1:

- We open with Clark Kent around the world trying to do good. Especially in war of some kind created by new weapons fabricated by LexCorp. He ends the war but thinks he needs to do more to inspire people so it wouldn't happen again. He needs to be a symbol of hope.

-Returns to Smallville to make the identity of Superman and as he returns to his home city, he remembers his childhood and learnings.

Act 2:

-Lexcorp is known for distribuiting technollogy around the world and making Metropolis the most advanced city on the planet. Luthor controls peoples lives.

-Lois is a truth seeking reporter who tries to reveal the world the true maniac Luthor is. Superman appears and works with Lois to bring down Luthor.

-There is no Metropolis Clark Kent and that is the twist! He just Superman at this point.

-We learn that the technollogy from LexCorp was based in a AI, UFO, the fell in the artic. Luthor found a way to control it and make good use of it for profit.

Act 3:

-The AI known as Brainiac takes over LexCorp and world's defense system to destroy Earth to make New Krypton.

-Superman learns the origins of his home planet he was seeking in the beggining and must chose between being a Kryptonian or protector of Earth.

-He choses both as he learns about the story of his father Jor-el and his sacrifice to save his life and Krypton.

-Brainiac vs Superman showdown in Brainiac's fortress in the Artic . World battle. Imagine: Army vs advanced technollogy. Superman is hurt but is saved by Lois Lane.

-Luthor finds a way to save people from Brainiac even though it was Jimmy Olsen who created a virus of some kind. He is revered as the saviour of manking and plans to candidate for President.

-Superman thinks he failed to be a hero because Luthor won.

ANd finally

-Inspired by Lois, he decides to act as a reporter, develop a new identity, to try to bring down Luthor adding Truth to his moral compass. The begginig of Lois & Clark relationship.

End

If only we could have someone this perfect for our time, sadly I don't think it will happen again. But we always have hope.
R.I.P. Christopher Reeve
