Superman Returns The opening & opening credits! What IMPACT did it have on you?

Yea man..it was so chilling/thrilling that I could care less about the "3rd Rock from the Sun" planets..

hey yeah it does look like that doesnt it :D

I got really nostalgic and remembered the times I'd seen the old Superman movies on TV as a kid, then felt really lucky that I was being given the chance to see a Superman movie on the big screen. It was cool.

when the credits rolled and I heard the theme I got goosebumps.

As soon as the Warner logo hit I went numb. Real numb. I almost didn't accept what I was seeing, because for the longest time, it seemed that watching a new Superman film would be impossible. Once the credits started to peak and the shield came out I grew goosebumps that didn't let up for like twenty minutes. My wife thinks I'm the biggest nerd on the planet. She's never been a fan of the old movies even though I'm the biggest Superman nerd within three zipcodes of my residence. Now she's actually interested in watching the old films. That is a true miracle. But yeah, the opening titles rocked my socks.

The planets and space showing the journey from Krypton was somewhat...cheesy and looked like a science fiction spoof in my opinion. The original made due with an epic starfield and didn't need to "fly around" and bounce around with arching lettering and colorful planets.

It felt like Star Trek or 3rd Rock from the Sun's opening.

I went numb at the WB logo, then when it showed Krypton there, with Brando's voice, my body went into spasm, it was amazing!

It reminded me of Friday the 13th Part 3

Ha Ha what? You mean with the paragraph at the beginning?

No, the way the names kept flying out at the screen. The same effect was used in Friday the 13th Part III. I think it was done for 3D effects in F13.

Heh Heh. That's funny. I can see that.

My problem is that they could have included snippits of STM and also Superman's trip to Krypton among the credits. Makes more sense.

I imagine clips from STM would've reminded people too much of Reeve who already overshadowed Routh as it is. However, clips from the trip to Krypton is a great idea. Definitely makes more sense then scrapping it entirely.

Plus I'd really like to know where the hell Clark got a space ship from.

Probably one of the crystals told him about the technology and Clark construted the ship from Earth-based Materials?

Originally it was going to be clips of Brando putting Kal-El into the ship, I think that was written in the script. I don't think there were Reeve scenes included, which you are right, wouldn't have made sense. It was also going to have the curtain and the kid at the beginning as well I think.

The spaceship was in the FOS and he launched from there as far as I know, but again, it would have been better to show it.

and to go even farther to explain...he grew the ship in the fortress...which I'm guessing he did in a matter of seconds...it would've been cool to see that scene...and better views of the Kryptonian suit would've been cool also...and the launching scene would be great....given it's significantly larger than his ship he first came to Earth in.

The opening was perhaps the best part of the movie. To hear the song playing as the credits rolled on,ironic..that was my favorite part of the movie.

I loved the opening titles on the second viewing more. I love that they had them in this movie. That opening in STM was and still is considered the best opening credits of all time. I did not like the goofy whipping into the planets, etc, and wish it had been more like the stuff in Contact.

I did not like the ending credits as it was just white over black. Also, they f'ed up on the chris and Dana Reeve tributes.

Yeah but that was in 1983, and the same effect was done in Jaws 3D (saw it in the theater as well) but STM did it first in 1978.

If you grew up watching the older one, they probably have more bearing, but if you're under 30, chances are you could care less. I liked it, as I remember seeing it for the first time when I was about 5, but that was in the early '80's.
Heh. I'm under 30, and grew up watching the older ones.

Either way, my jaw dropped when the opening credits started and I was sitting there like a giddy little schoolboy, going to my friends: "This is so old-school, this is so old-school." And my heart grew three sizes when the theme started playing.

I thought the opening was awesome. That opening is classic like Star Wars. Sure no one does the 3D stuff anymore but so what. Nothing wrong with some old school.

My entire theatre orgisassmed. True story. Thank goodness no kids went to see SR in theatres.....whatta relief.

(wipes forehead)

it really made me think of it as a sequel to one of the old movies, but it's not but sort of is.

Yes, the opening credits were certainly nostalgic. However, maybe they could have made the swoosh sound effects a little louder because I thought they were a little subdued when compared to the original opening credits in STM. Also, the idea of having a few Krypton journey scenes sounds wonderful. Actually, I find the STM credits more beautiful and classic specially when viewed on the Special Edition DVD.
