By that logic, a film on its own shouldn't bother sticking to one tone. But you can't have tonal shifts, because it's results in a disjointed viewing experience. TASM2 is a great, recent example of that.

Hancock is another which had a lot of tonal shifts.

Because it causes problems for the eventual team up movie.
Say IP One is grim dark and IP Two is light.
When they do the big IP One vs IP Two...they will eventually have to decide which tone do they use for the team up movie. If the Tone is grim dark...it may upset fans of the light IP Two....if the tone is light...it may upset fans of IP One.

again using the Marvel movies as an example
Iron Man was a light action comedy...every film in that universe will be a variation on that tone. Imagine if Doctor Strange comes out and it's steeped in horror and close to an R rating. So if Strange joins the fight in Avengers 3 or 4 there will be this big tonal shift that he'll feel off. So they either make Avengers 3 and 4 grim dark or match Strange's tone to the rest of the universe.

There's a bit of a difference between horror, R rated Dr. Strange crossing into family friendly Avengers than what I was thinking. What I was thinking was more of a light hearted Flash movie and a Nolan-esque (tonally, not how he decided to ground it more in reality) Batman movie. I see no reason why these two stories need the same tone in order to crossover later. They can crossover and both can maintain their personalities that reflect the tone of their film. The tone of the Justice League movie they crossover in however would need to find a good medium.

Marvel's consistent tone is one of the things that bores me about that universe.

No, actually, those are two different things. We're talking about two different films with two different tones that eventually crossover and can be meshed if done right. If you're telling one story, stick to one appropriate tone for most of it. When you're telling multiple stories in different films that just will crossover at some point, you can tell these different stories with different tones.

People are either overreacting on an embarrassing level, or they simply can't admit that something not from Marvel Studios looks good, lol.

The movie looks incredible. The cinematography in particular is outstanding. It looks like a legit film through and through, and the Cronenberg influence makes me even more excited than before.

I was for this movie since day one, and now even moreso. It certainly looks better than Ant-Man, and dare I say it, the trailer is considerably better than Age of Ultron's.

If the world isn't one tone, then one movie doesn't need to have one tone, as one movie is still based in the world.

But no, you really can't bounce around between tones like that, because it won't be cohesive. It doesn't matter if they're separate films/stories or not. The stories still need to feel like they can co-exist, because they'll eventually need to come together to tell one story.

I really like the cinematography too.

While I disagree about it looking better than AOU, I completely agree with the rest. I really liked the teaser. And think this will be a good movie.

I think it's more fair to look at trailer and say you don't like it instead of saying you ahte it without seeing anything.

Studio wars are going to cause some to never like it.

I like teaser and can't wait for film.

I get FC vibe from teaser In sense it can surprise people.

FC and DOFP at least till final trailer downplayed lighter moments so there can still be lighter moments as Kinberg said.

As I already told you, I'm not talking about one film. One film is not the same thing.

However, I have a feeling we may as well drop this as you are probably unlikely to change your mind won't change and mine won't change on this. You say an entire universe needs to have the same tone, I say stories need to have a consistent tone but that tone doesn't need to be the same as everything else in that universe. I don't see this discussion going anywhere but in circles.

On topic, they got a good composer.

Did you guys happen to see the yahoo exclusive Trank/Kinberg commentary version of the trailer? It was pretty cool, he talks about meeting with Stan Lee. It's also really cool how serious trank sounds like he was taking this movie, he truly wants to make an original scifi film with the f4.

Was really insightful

Yeah, I'm on the same page, looks great.

I read somewhere that Fox can't just crossover their Marvel franchises as they would please, but based on the trailer, this looks like it's straight out of the Days of Future Past playbook (which I love). And businesswise, it would make sense to have a big "FF vs. X" event movie down the line. Do you guys think we'll get a few nods to the mutants in general or the X-Men in particular in this movie?

Trank in his Collider interview said we weren't gonna get any, as he didn't want to make a movie that had to use the X-Men to seem credible and wanted this to be a F4 film through and through. As we've seen though in the trailer already, there were already Easter Eggs to other F4 mythos, and I'm sure with the Negative Zone we'll get more even more as well. (Mole Man? Annihilus?)

Twitter reactions seem great as well, even from the non-Fox camp from guys like Steven DeKnight. Bryan Hitch's tweets seem really great from his experiences on the film as well though they're somewhat adapting his work so it'd be natural that he would have good things to say about it.

I remember Kinberg doing all these podcasts and interviews for the press on DOFP and I hope Trank does a lot for F4, he seems really insightful and I'd really love to learn more about the creative decision process for the film (particularly one that is such a wildly different interpretation from any previous incarnation of the F4).

I reckon it's his first costume. Like these

And he'll get a more classic one later in the movie

That is quite possible...

I honestly don't expect any other suits than the containment suits. Don't think we'll see anything resembling a F4 costume, even near the end.

The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous, reminded me of Gravity for a minute there.
Yeah, it's the highlight for me.

I agree, but it's not an issue for me. What I see from the suits in context works nicely.

i was hoping the containment suits were going to be a temporary thing in the film but the negative zone footage looks like the climax of the film. hopefully once i see more of them in action they grow on me. they may have something more traditional at the end though that leads into the sequel...

The production design is good. And I like the themes of exploration.

That about all I got to say thats positive.

I'm going on the premise that the only alteration to Jordan's costume will be adding the '||||' to his chest. From the teaser, the action shot looks like it's from before that little item gets added.

Not exactly a major identifying change to make them fit the uniform styles of the comics.

I feel like the Negative Zone is the end of act 1 since that's how they get their powers. They're later using their powers inside the Baxter Building.

Anyone notice there looks like two separate attempts to enter the N-Zone?
Maybe Doom's attempt fails and so he sabotages Reed's attempt out of jealousy.

The FF are in black suits.

That is true, they may be on a rescue mission that goes awry.
