Capcom The Resident Evil Thread

Why was...what necessary? I have no idea what you inferred from that, it was just my way of walking away from that conversation. Like I said, the comparison shows that we're on two very different plains and we're not going to see eye to eye, I can just tell, because there's no way in a thousand years I would ever compare Resident Evil to those two in any context, and I'm not going to get into any kind of extended debate about it.
But that makes no sense. Because Onimusha is a Resident Evil style game from that era. From the style of movement, to the puzzles, and even the gameplay is similar, though of course less range. It is just better at those things. Devil May Cry was a cancelled version of RE4, but fine don't compare. But the idea that Onimusha isn't an Resident Evil style game just isn't true. There is a clear path of comparison. It would be like saying you can't compare Resident Evil 4 to The Evil Within.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me at all and that's fine but there is no use stressing myself out by discussing are virtually polar opposite opinions.

I think first person RE is a travesty and I loathe where videogames have gone. Not a popular opinion but those are my thoughts. I purchased a PS3 to mostly play 15-20 year old games.

I'm not mad at anybody I just don't care to discuss RE with people who didn't love it from the beginning and or don't like the old games now.

I was made a fan by the 3.5 trailers. The setting has me intrigued. Looks like its down in New Orleans or somewhere nearby.

If you think that the old games are bad and bizarrely compare them to action games, games that aren't even in the same genre then we have nothing to discuss.I cherish the RE oldschool games, I don't agree that they are bad but fun.
There is a big bridge between greatness and bad. I never said they were bad. Do I think some Resident Evil games are bad? Yes. 6 comes to mind. I enjoy the vast majority andfind them good. But 4 is the only one I'd call great, because it was the one that nailed the gameplay. People think I hate God of War 3 because I say it isn't great, especially compared to the first two. But I have beat 3 like 5 times. I clearly like it.

I get the idea that games age, but I also think there is something to say about how gracefully stuff like MGS and and Half-Life from the same era are still incredibly playable imo. While I just don't find the same with Resident Evil games pre-4.

SPIDEY have you ever played Onimusha? Do you know the story behind DMC? I don't bring them up randomly.

There are more trailers?

I saw two of them way back. One was Leon vs Hookman, and then there was the one with the airship, the castle and the black fog thing. Both of those are what brought me into the series. :)

You can find some enemy designs in the Umbrella Archives books. They passed over some really good stuff - though most of it seems to have been the basis for some of 6's enemies.

DMC was originally about some guy that was Spencer's son going to Spencer's castle. That got changed into Dante and Mallet Island.

I own Onimusha and DMC but I've only gotten to the first boss in Onimusha. Yes I know the history behind DMC and it isn't an RE game because it is an action adventure title. I played enough of it to know that. Onimusha plays more like RE but it's still a very different game.

RE just grabs me more than those games.

Ugh, I just wish they did the first person crap as a side story and not the main game.

He's talking about the old RE4 videos (not actual trailers, work-in-progress leaks) before they revamped it into what it is today. His wording is just weird since he's talking about RE7 at the same time.

Maybe I will hold out hope that this is another RE 1.5 and RE 3.5 situation.

wait?? so RE7 is a 1st person game?? :(

I just got around to watching the trailer.

What's RE1.5 in reference to? RE3.5 references the working builds of RE4 before it shifted into what it became and is known as today. I wasn't aware of anything like that happening in-between 1 and 2?

RE 1.5 is the original Resident Evil 2 before the team scraped the whole game and started over. I think it was 90% done. There is tons of footage on YouTube. A character named Eliza Walker became Claire Redfeld for the released game we all know today. Leon was always the playable male character though. The police station looked modern and different enemies were in the game as well.

Ah, well surprisingly, I wasn't aware of that. Interesting.

Oh, I thought you were you talking about VII. I got confused. Sorry Victarion.

Which means you never played two, which means you never met Gogandantess, which means you have not truly lived:

Maybe it is one of those rail shooters. :o

Darth you are right, I should finally bite the bullet and play and beat the Onimusha series. At least the first three.

The first two are a pair of my favorites. While I was big into Nintendo growing, games like MGS, DMC and Onimusha changed what I looked for in a game. I am guessing for a lot of people, especially those a little older them me, Resident Evil was that for them.

I have no right to to rain on your feelings here. While I have a passing love affair with the series outside of 4, I know it means a lot to many here, especially in our age range. I must remember how I reacted to DmC, when one of my favorite franchises became something I am not a big fan of. I am sorry SPIDEY.

And I'm sorry for acting like a huge A-hole. I overreacted and should just respect differing opinions more without getting so uptight about them.

It sucks that DMC was ruined for you. I didn't even know that you were a fan of that series because we don't talk about videogames a lot.

Eh, I survived the transition from old school RE to the current style of RE (and, as fan from the beginning, RE needed to evolve because the formula was getting stale to a lot of people, even if hardcore fans didn't thinks so). I will survive this one, too, if the game is actually good.

Saying that, it's pretty shocking if there's not some bait and switch going on here and this isn't what it seemed. As different RE4 was to what came before, there was still a lot of familiarity to it. From the characters, the setting, the atmosphere, the style, the writing, etc. VII just seems...so out of left field. Of course, maybe it's not and the actual game will be closer to RE than it looks, but the way in which it was presented was so different than what I think anyone would expect from Resident Evil, new or old, it's very jarring. Anyone familiar with the franchise can see that.

You weren't really putting down anyone's opinion. If anything, I was putting your feelings to the side, which was unfair.

I actually bought Code Veronica for the DMC demo. I didn't finish Code Veronica, but I played the heck out of that demo. The series has had its ups and downs, and the spitiual sucessor that is the Bayonetta series I am just as in love with. But there is always hope in the DMC fandom, as DMC 5 has been rumored for years. Maybe someday.

I was talking to my brother about this, as he is the Resident Evil expert in the family, and I think he made a good point on why this is a bit different then the original transition. Shinji Mikami was the director of the original and thus he figured out a way to move the series forward, while keeping a lot of the same DNA. Now that he is gone, it seems they aren't sure how to do that.

As resistant as I am to the first person perspective I have played through nearly every RE game, with the exception of most of 6 and Zero. I'm more than likely gonna pre-order this and play it through because the RE fan in me won't allow a new RE game to not get played. I need to run through Zero here soon too. May finish RE6 soon too.

It's exactly what I've been hoping for. Just hope it turns out to be as close to that trailer as possible. It's a bit jarring, I'll admit, but it looks great.

And no doubt P.T. has been of some influence.
