The "Rise Of Marvels" RPG, Year One: Sign-Up/OOC Thread

I hate to do this, but I have to drop Captain America. I owe this RPG serious dedication, and it requires too much effort for me to make a post as Cap to be any kind of a presence. Instead, I am working on an application for a new character - one who I will participate more fully as.

Naturally, I'll have to read up on what you did with him. But I'll see if I'm interested.

'RISE OF MARVELS' RPG Application

Screenname: Eddie Brock Jr.

Character You Would Like To Play: Johnny Storm, The Human Torch

Powers: Pyrokinesis, flight.
Basic History Of The Character (Up until this point): Johnny Storm is a renowned male model/actor. Even though he's only eighteen, he has single-handedly achieved more fame than some people twice his age. He's a teenage heartthrob with an attitude and an ego bigger than his bodyguard, Benjamin Grimm.

Johnny's father is a wealthy philanthropist who invested in Stark Industries from the very beginning. Franklin Storm is the father of two children. In addition to Johnny, he also has an older daughter, Susan - who is romantically linked to Reed Richards, one of the brightest scientific minds of the century and concurrently Sue's high school sweetheart.

A severe accident during one of Reed's experiments leads to Johnny - and the others - gaining amazing powers.

Pre-Mutant, Post-Mutant, Or Other? (Beings unpowered or of cosmic origin): Post-Mutant

Three Reasons Why You Have Chosen That Character:
1. I can write Johnny, and I genuine enjoy NPCing the whole Fantastic Four. Of the four, however, I have the easiest time writing for Torch.

2. In other continuities, Johnny's fame is the result of his powers or Sue's relationship with Reed. I have effectively changed that. Johnny is a celebrity in his own right - long before he puts on the tights.

3. I just know, in the back of my mind, that if I don't establish the Fantastic Four, they are going to fade away.

What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character As A Person (IE: How are you changing him or her?): Truthfully, Johnny's personality is not going to be much different. I have, however, changed how he's related to each of his teammates. Ben is more connected to Johnny than Reed, and Sue isn't a scientist. Additionally, Johnny is a spoiled rich kid - thus explaining his attitude.
Two Complete Sentences In Proper English Explaining What You Can Bring To This RPG (As A Player): I can bring a playful, light-hearted atmosphere to the Fantastic Four - which I can write much better than the political angst of Captain America. The bottom line is that Johnny is easier to write, which - while it is less rewarding personally - will help me be more active.

What Fonts Do You Plan To Use For Your Character’s Speech? (Makes the roster look better): Navy Blue Comic Sans MS
Please Provide A Small Sample Post In The Format You Wish To Portray Your Character In:

"Oh my God! It's Johnny Storm!"

I smirk as I put down my fork. I rather enjoy such a reaction - even if it does come in the way of my dinner. I think there's a part of me that goes out just so that people can fawn over me. It's such a power trip having people scream your name. I can't picture anything else giving you such a rush.

The young blond girl comes to my table, and she's literally shaking. Her redhead friend is too sheepish to approach me directly. However, the other girl doesn't seem to be hindered. "Oh my God! Oh my God!" she repeats excitedly. I sit quietly and wait for her to say something else. "I love you so much!"

"Please, you're too kind," I reply arbitrarily.

She looks like she's literally going to explode with excitement. "You don't understand!" she insists. "I love you! Would you--"

Before she can finish her request, I'm already handing her an autographed napkin. When you get approached by enough admirers, you begin to predict their next move.

"Thank you! Thank you so much! Oh my God!"

I hand her another one with a nod to her redheaded friend. "That's for her," I explain. "Tell her that I said that I like her dress."

Urge...to continue...Cap playing in another RPG....tingling....must...resist....not...resisting...well...

... do I need to quote Harlekin's manifesto for you? :o

Dibs are not concrete - not in this game, at least. They are only a way of letting fellow players know that you are interested. After all, it's all up to you to decide if you're going to respect someone else's wishes.

Well...between me and Byrd, I'm not sure if that'll happen. :o nah, Byrd can have em.

Respect someone else's wishes? Ridiculous, I'm sorry. If your wish and my wish are the same, then it has to be about who gets the app up first and not who calls 'dibs' first.

**** yeah!

Apologies, but I'm dropping Agent Zero. It's really just a matter the other RPGs taking priority, since I have important plans with others in all of them. I only had plans with Sieben in this RPG, and that was just for one fight, but now he's taking a small hiatus, so all I have are solo arcs.

Again, I apologize. I will most likely be back later, though, with a character that offers more interaction then Agent Zero does.

You know, I'm really glad so many people got up in arms about my dibs joke. People wonder why I do the **** I do, well times like this make it worth it.

Character You Would Like To Play: Doc Ock
Powers:Tentacles: Doctor Octopus' superhuman abilities derive from the four mentally-controlled, electronically-powered, telescoping, prehensile titanium-steel tentacles attached to a stainless steel harness encircling his body from lower chest to waist. Each tentacle, approximately five inches in diameter, terminates in three single-jointed pincers. The pincers are able to rotate in relation to the arm for 360 degrees, in a screwdriver-like twisting motion. Each tentacle segment contains four high-efficiency electric motors equipped with a clutched, helical-gear train, independently mounted on frictionless gimbals and housed in four thin, overlapping layers of titanium-niobium steel. The titanium-steel alloy is light, has high-tensile strength, a high melting point, and high thin-wall rigidity. The motors get their power from a small nuclear-powered thermo-electric generator, which can provide several hundred watts per hour for up to five years before needing to replece its U-239 core. The tentacles have been modified since the time of the original accident to include high-efficiency battery packs (enabling movement when cut off from the central power source) and individual micro-circuit control modules (enabling each arm to perform certain pre-programmed actions when Octopus loses conscious control). In the event that Octopus loses consciousness, the control module of each arm has enough pre-programmed conditional responses in its memory chip to enable it to perform a relatively complex sequence of actions, such as saving his life. The trauma of his arm or arms being separated from the harness causes a period of disorientation in which his arms flail about uncontrollably until the pre-programming takes over.

Basic History Of The Character (Up until this point): Before the molecular fusion experiment went awry on national television Doctor Otto Octavious was the worlds leading molecular physisyst and scientist. He would show the world the great things that could be done with the "arms" such as remotely operate on a mans heart, assist on the battle field and help where humans can not reach such as the deepest parts of the ocean. But when a nuclear terrorist bombed his Apartment from which the broadcast was taking place billions of people across the world including children saw the nuclear heat literally incinerate the flesh off of about 100 people Octavious was presumed dead along with 6 square miles of the outskirts of New York...

Character You Would Like To Play: Willis Stryker/Diamondback

Powers: Extremely skilled knife thrower. Carries numerous special knives, some explode on contact, some release poisonous gas, some radiate brain damaging waves, the possibilites are vast.

Basic History Of The Character (Up until this point): After surviving his last encounter with Luke Cage, Willis ran off to Detroit to make it as a crime boss. This didn't turn out so well and he ended up getting defeated countless times by local heroes. As a chance at real skill, Diamondback relocated to Jersey where he further perfected his knife throwing under the teachings of an old school gangster who was now nothing more than a bum. Willis mastered numerous attacks that he had never seen. As his final test the old man fought Willis to the death. On the verge of being butchered by his master, Willis used his only special knife he had. It landed next to the old gangster and emmitted sonic waves that put him in a coma. Diamondback decided to return to New York. As his first task, he had to get his flunky, Gadjet, back. He arranged a pack with local thugs to free Gadjet out of jail. Gadjet gladly rejoined Willis and instantly started to make a whole new arsenal of knives for the villain called Diamondback.

Pre-Mutant, Post-Mutant, Or Other? (Beings unpowered or of cosmic origin): Human, just really skilled at knife throwing & knife fighting

Three Reasons Why You Have Chosen That Character:
1. He's an interesting villain.
2. He's a black villain.
3. All he has for fighting is his natural skill and I want to work with that.

What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character As A Person (IE: How are you changing him or her?): I want to make him a conteder against the big time heroes and villains, but only because as a black villain he cast as just that. He could have had a good run if he wasn't killed in the original Hero for Hire storyline.

Two Complete Sentences In Proper English Explaining What You Can Bring To This RPG (As A Player): I can bring the ethnicity that is lacking in comics, and give it a realistic idea with no stereotypes. I'm always fair when it comes to a battle, and, therefor, know when I'm beat or when I think I can win.

What Fonts Do You Plan To Use For Your Character’s Speech? (Makes the roster look better): This shade of green

Please Provide A Small Sample Post In The Format You Wish To Portray Your Character In: Willis stepped to the window in his apartment, staring down at his streets. He stood wondering how all this had changed, and then the answer slipped out his mouth.

"Carl"

Diamondback packed up a set of regular knives and a row of special ones. He got dressed and put on rain coat for the weather. He opened his apartment door, preparing to leave, but then he paused and turned around to look once more at his ugly home. He thought to himself, We used to run together. Man, you really messed up, but I guess it is kinda of my fault too. Oh well, it doesn't matter after so long because now it's about us. The last one left alive is the real man, and I can reasure you, Carl, this blood ain't going down again.

Willis turned and closed the door, and again only one word slipped out his mouth.

'RISE OF MARVELS' RPG Application
Screenname: The Manly Torch

Character You Would Like To Play: Benjamin J. Grimm, the Thing

Powers: Superhuman strength, endurance, and durability. Ben can lift 90 tons. His skeletal, muscular, and integumentary systems increased in density and durability, as well as his organs and connective tissue. Despite having greater mass and tougher skin, he remains flexible and retains above average reflexes.

Because his lung’s have superhuman volume and capacity, he can hold his breath underwater for 20 minutes. His senses can withstand greater amounts of stimuli than a normal human can, and suffer no reduced sensitivity. The Thing can withstand extreme temperatures from -90° to 850° Fahrenheit for up to an hour and a half. His tough skin can withstand massive explosion and swift impacts (such as being hit by a bazooka shell) up to 45 lb. of high explosives. However, his immune system is still susceptible.

Basic History Of The Character (Up until this point): Benjamin Grimm grew up in poverty. He idolized his brother, who was involved in the Yancy Street gang of Manhattan. Daniel Grimm earned the money for his family because their alcoholic father could not hold down a job. When a gang battle took Daniel’s life, an angry Benjamin took up his torch and, in a few years, became the leader of Daniel’s gang. When his parents died, Ben’s uncle Jake took him in and cared for him. Now being raised by a compassionate physician not held back by poverty, Ben reluctantly embraced the clean life and enrolled in Stuyvesant High School. When he graduated, he attended Empire State University on a football scholarship.

It was at Empire State where he met Reed Richards and they became friends. After he graduated, he joined the U.S. Air Force and became an exceptional pilot. Soon after he left the military, Ben was found by Reed, who wanted him to pilot his experimental creation: a starship for interstellar travel. They were accompanied by Reed’s future wife and her brother, Susan and Johnny Storm. It was on this voyage into outer space that all their lives were changed.

After mostly accepting his gruesome transformation, though he may never truly and fully accept it, Ben—after several years on his own, trying to find himself—returned to Reed and was persuaded into becoming Johnny Storm’s bodyguard, since he was becoming a recognizable face almost everywhere. Logically, Ben was the best suited for the job because of his physique, let alone his ability. Outwardly, he never expressed joy in the duty, but inwardly, after having met Johnny and going through the life-altering experience with him in space, Ben knew he’d already become attached to the obnoxious youngster.

Pre-Mutant, Post-Mutant, Or Other? (Beings unpowered or of cosmic origin): Post-Mutant.

Three Reasons Why You Have Chosen That Character:
1. Because the Fantastic Four is my favorite Marvel line, and I like Ben the most.
2. I think I could do well in putting myself in his shoes and relating.
3. Plus, he’s not too complex. He basically only has one ability, and isn’t all-powerful.

What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character As A Person (IE: How are you changing him or her?): For the most part, I think Marvel’s concept is a very good one, and I’m not going to change much about him at all. To me, he’ll always be the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing.

Two Complete Sentences In Proper English Explaining What You Can Bring To This RPG (As A Player): I can bring that certain contribution that every member brings by giving this RPG another player to keep things active. I believe solely in playing this for fun, and I plan on contributing so that everyone can have fun. I have my pride, but I do not intend on engaging in any arguments with anyone or going against Harlekin’s Manifesto.

What Fonts Do You Plan To Use For Your Character’s Speech? (Makes the roster look better): Orange Georgia

Please Provide A Small Sample Post In The Format You Wish To Portray Your Character In: The busy streets called out to the pedestrians, honking its horns every five minutes and inducing bursts of shouting from both angry drivers and angry walkers. However, the doors slamming, the windows shutting, people leaving their apartments, people going to work, birds chirping, dogs barking, and the occasional loud thumping of a car radio playing rap did not compare to the noise Ben was hearing from all the screaming fan girls fawning over Johnny, the man to whom he was bodyguard.

“Okay, okay,” Ben ushered the masses back. “Not everybody at once, give the man some breathing room!”

Of course, his voice was drowned out by the screaming, but everyone took note when he advanced and pushed the large, human mass away from Johnny. A couple of girls, taking the act as aggression, started striking Ben with their purses and jumping on his back. Ben was caught off guard for a moment, but as the human females could not harm him, he did not flinch. With a calm disposition, Ben plucked the both of them of his shoulders, flailing wildly in his firm grip, and bellowed, “SHUT YER STRINKIN’ TRAPS!” until everyone froze in fear. Ben could feel a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, but he resisted, maintaining a stern, professional glare. Now was time, again, to explain the importance of elbow room to so many empty-headed bimbos.

“If ya want Johnny’s autograph,” Ben began to explain loudly and clearly. “If ya want to shake his hand, if ya want to kiss his boots, if ya want to chat with the guy, if ya even want to be in his proximity, then ya gotta stay calm and quit chokin’ him to death! Ya want ‘im to stay alive, don’tcha?! If ya can’t contain yourselves, then Johnny’s handsome butt goes back through that door and we bolt it ‘til every last one of ya regains composure and goes back home! Am I clear?!”

Like a mass of hypnotized zombies, they all shook their heads vigorously keeping their eyes on him. The Thing shook his head ever so slightly as he turned and walked back to Johnny’s side, snorting at Johnny’s eyes accusing him of being a party-pooper. As he stopped and turned, he muttered, “I don’t get paid enough for this lousy gig.” Johnny snickered, and Ben looked at him accusingly, realizing that this man—a rambunctious partier who always got the Thing in so much trouble, who made it so difficult to be his bodyguard, yet who was always there when Ben needed him nonetheless—didn’t really have to pay him at all; Ben would have stuck by his side nonetheless.

“Alright, bring ‘em on.”

Do You Know How To Post Pictures On The Hype?

Approved.

By the way - Really sorry that I haven't started with Daredevil. I've been swamped with some behind-the-scenes stuff with DC that I just haven't been able to dedicate my attention to the beginning arc.

dylan, you're approved for Doc Ock, but something about your sample irks me. The explosion kills thousands of people? That seems a tad excessive. Hundreds might sound more accurate.

EDIT: Couple of things, Manly Torch, there was no space travel. The FF got their powers from an explosion at the Baxter - see my post in the IC thread. I also didn't know if you wanted to have Ben and Reed connected by past friendship, but I imagined it like they didn't. It's no big deal if you want them to be old friends though.
