The Runaways Thread

i runaways is and has always seem to be marvels wanna be "indie" comic... so i dont have a problem with it, plus imo ramos fits well with the cali theme. alot of that art is done here.

Let me put it this way; every single other artist who has drawn the Runaways has been better than Ramos to me. Well, 'cept for Scottie Young, who drew them for a 10 page FCBD story.

That and I guess apathy is still leading me to likely say farewell to the kids unless I read some FANTASTIC reviews for early issues.

well either way i think Ramos is way more suited for Runaways, then Wolverine and Spider-man

I finally bought and read Whedon/Ryan's "Dead End Kids" arc. I'm a little pissed off that it was released as a hardcover, as it's going to look awkward next to my digests. Anyway...

I remember hearing some bad things about Whedon's run, but I imagine many of the negative opinions came from delays. Overall, this was a pretty good story. It was heartbreaking in some parts, had a bit more action than I'm used to in this title, and had a nice sprinkling of humor that didn't derail the dramatic aspects. I've always thought Whedon and Vaughan had similar dialogue writing styles (save for Vaughan's habit of having characters give a lot of useless-but-interesting trivia), and I hardly noticed any change in the characters' voices. As always, I'm digging Ryan's art.

I do have a few gripes, however. The first is the way Molly was portrayed. During Vaughan's run, Molly was a surprisingly intelligent little girl who hid it behind a childish persona, not to mention her natural naivete. Whedon didn't make her an idiot, but I did kinda miss the moments where she'd randomly display knowledge in random stuff. But I think that goes back to the whole thing about Vaughan always writing characters with a wealth of trivial knowledge.

My only other complaint was that I found the whole thing with the super-gang war a little confusing. I found myself flipping back to previous chapters just so I could remember who's on whose side.

that preview sucked. the writing, mostly.

I didn't think it was that bad.
I've pretty much given up on buying single issues comics but when it comes out in trade I might pick it up. The art isn't as good as Joss's run but the writing seems better.

I'm too used to seeing the Runaways draw by people who understand things like proportion and anatomy. :o

Alphona was never a slave to anatomical correctness, it's just he stylized things in a way that was interesting and unique instead of ****ty generic and trite.

The only caveat with the YA/RUNAWAYS SI crossover is that a lot of the YA bits have been written by Bendis in the event proper, so in a way they have to follow that sequence and this are more predictable. Still, it continues after Whedon's run ends and does focus on some other characters.

The YA PRESENTS mini I am sure will be in trade form by Christmas, so I would suggest waiting for that.

Initiative is great, reminds me of how I felt about Vaughnan's run on Runaways.

The second issue of SI: RUNAWAYS/YA was better than the first. Yost was smart enough to mostly omit the characters that Bendis is covering in his actual mini (Stature, Patriot, Vision, and Hawkeye) and instead is focusing on the Runaways as well as Hulkling, Speed, and Wiccan. It is coming together fairly well. Chase made good use of his reclaimed Fistigons. :)

I hate Ramos SO MUCH and I swear to god no matter what comic book I like he somehow worms his ****ty ass art into it. I feel like punching him in the face.

I'm pretty curious to see how the new series does. I've already decided I'm not going to buy it, but I wonder if Ramos' art will make as big a difference to the rest of the comic-buying public as it does to a lot of people around here. Gotta remember to keep an eye on it in the sales charts.

I don't know about in general, but in this case - as in, on Runaways - lowered or heightened sales numbers don't necessarily equate to Ramos's art. The writer changed, too. It's quite possible that as many people will not be buying the book because Whedon is no longer writer, or still because Vaughan is no longer writer. Or they were turned off, like Dread, by the delays that plagued Whedon's arc, and no longer care about buying the book.

Really? I was under the impression that his comics sold okay.

Most of his books only sold well because they were X-titles or a Spidey title, but if you look, they tended to drop a lil I believe, sales wise, when he would take over or whatever he would do. X-Men didn't really even come close to Astonishing or Uncanny when he was drawing. New X-Men was the lowest seller of the Messiah Complex tie ins, IIRC. Even his Wolverine issues of Civil War didn't make much of a dent I believe. Even if it wasn't, it sure was close to X-Factor, which was down there too. I don't know how Spectacular Spidey did when it started, but I know it didn't really ever come close to Amazing.

no offense, but half of those titles went through a bad wrighting slump at that time too...

Nope, try that excuse again, sorry. X-Men had Carey, the best writer that book has had in a long time according to just about everyone who has read it. Spidey had the rather famous Paul Jenkins, so that's out. Wolverine had Marc Guggenheim, who has his followers, which was also under the Civil War banner, and that didn't stop people from turning away. And while I have been very vocal about the ****ty-ness of Yost and Kyle on New X-Men, they do have their supporters, and again, it was under the banner of an event, which is usually a sales booster, yet New X-Men was still at the bottom of the heap of the four titles involved. No offense taken, but that doesn't float.

ummm Young X-men was a good story, but it was "inbetween" 2 good arks, and was actually kinda weak and "out there", Spidey had F'd up stories during that time period. The writer didnt matter.

Wolverine was kinda boring too but i actually enjoyed ramos's art in it.

so your point is mute. I know i for one have never boughten a comic just because the writer.

Whedon's RUNAWAYS debut sold around 50-60k or more, which was more than double where Vaughan finished. But after the delays got longer, the final issue capped at 31k, which is more than the BKV/Alphona book averaged (it hovered around 23-25k for years and topped at 27k for the final arc), but still a mighty drop from #25.

The book historically relied on digest sales before the spectacle of Whedon on the book, so I do wonder how the hardcores will react to the Moore/Ramos team. I know I likely won't be one of 'em.
