Well it's replacing a classic Edna episode with an episode that's more about Ned then Edna.

It could be argued that Bart the Lover is more about Bart than Edna. After all, in both episodes, she is merely a plot device for another character's growth. I'd say if anything, the episode about Edna and Seymour is probably the closest thing to an Edna-centric plot. She was never a main character on any episode, to my knowledge.

One's a beloved classic, the other is a so-so episode from the zombie Simpsons era, that aired not too long ago. It just seems lazy.

Maybe it's an old school Simpsons fan thing.

I think Grade School Confidential would have been a good choice as well. But Bart the Lover is the best choice. It was the first episode that was really about her.

I can't remember any episodes that heavily focused on her. Edna was always more prominent being Bart's teacher. Lisa was never the problem child or student so there was less to work with there.

Deadline says that they will continue to have Edna played by Marcia Wallace through Pre-Recordings of her voice and then retire Edna when those pre-recordings run out.

Nope. She's probably one of the least explored characters in the show. Mr. Largo is pretty close.

The few scenes she gets which last longer than a second are mostly her being hostile towards Lisa, or dismissive of Ralph.

I didn't mind Ned and Edna getting together but they missed an opportunity to develop Skinner's character years ago. He should have gotten out from under his mother and married Edna.

They had a lot of episodes centered on them (probably the most of any couple besides obviously Homer and Marge).

I don't think Ned is a bad choice, but you can't top Seymour and Edna (see Grade School Confidential).

They officially wrote out Krabappel tonight. Ned daydreamed of him and her dancing and then looked at a picture of Krabappel next to a picture of Maude saying that he missed her laugh.
