The Simpsons to kill off one of their main characters this season, reveals show produ

Sad news, Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel died yesterday.

Apparently they will be retiring her character.

Yes, retiring the character, and she's not the one they'll kill off, as producer has Al Jean has stated. Just in case anyone was wondering if they might make it her because of this.

It will be difficult, wasn't she dating Ned?

RIP :csad:

This also means that Ned will be losing his second wife on the show. Poor Ned. I'm gonna miss Mrs Krabappel :csad:

I didn't know they would kill the voice actor when they did it. Probably a bit tasteless but I think she'd approve given her comedic history.

RIP

It truly is sad, I always liked Ms Krabappel and I think Marcia Wallace was a fine actor.

Sad to hear this. This will have a much bigger impact on the show than Maude passing ever did.

This is really going to suck for Ned, poor guy losing his second wife... I kind of hope that they just have Edna retire as a teacher but stay married to Ned off camera.

I think that's probably their best route. Retire her from teaching and just be a housewife to Ned and raise the boys. We rarely see her as it is as his wife already.

The tricky part is how to retire her. I wonder if they'll use Bart as the reason (some prank off screen of course), or if it will be a quiet, uneventful retirement and they introduce a new teacher for Bart's class.

It will be a good sendoff for Edna to have a baby with Ned, and decide to not return from her mat leave to raise the baby full-time.

Of course, the baby will have spiky yellow hair.

I should have thought of that. It resolves a lot of potential issues of where she disappeared to.

RIP Marcia Wallace.

Not the first time they retired a character due to the death of an actor. When Phil Hartman died, both Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz retired.

They're not going to turn her passing into a plot-point (i.e: Edna moving away or raising a baby full time). Who would voice those sign-off episodes? How awkwardly unfunny would it be to address that on an animated sitcom? They're just not going to show Bart in class anymore.

It's really a shame. I've barely watched Simpsons in the last decade, but Edna Krabapple was one of my favorite characters in the 90's. Lot of classic episodes with her, like Bart faking a romantic correspondance with her.

That's going to be too great an imposition on the writers to not have that as a setting they can use for storylines.

maybe they'll finally let Bart actually pass for 4th grade and he'll get a new 5th grade teacher

such a loss in real life rip

in the terms of the show sadly i wouldn't want them to retire the character i can totally understand why out of respect that they would want to though

she's such a huge part and now with the marriage to ned it opened up a load of new doors for all 4 characters that have really been lying stagnant ned, rod, todd and edna

In the non-canon episode "Holidays of Future Passed", ned says Homer killed Edna by accident, too. Then, he married Maude's ghost.

I really hope they don't kill the character.

I doubt they will. When Phil Hartman was killed they simply retired his characters from returning. Edna I think will be the same way although her lacking presence will be more obvious.

It's going to be an issue. Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz, while funny, were bit characters, Mrs. Krabappel was in most that centered on Bart. Often as a background character, sure, but nonetheless always there. She's had entire episodes focused on her. Well, Troy did have that one where he dated Selma, but still. Her living next door doesn't help.

They're going to have to address it.

Bart the Lover is a really underrated classic episode.

Homer's tip for how to break it off at the end: "Three words: I am gay." :hehe:

From Bart the Lover:
Dear Edna,

Your photo took my breath away. Truly yours is a butt that won't quit. Yesterday morning, I put your picture up in my garage to inspire me while I gapped my spark plugs.
