Hi everyone,

My review SPOILER FREE.

It's almost a year since I followed you, but this is my first post.

I just registered myself only for comment the film that I saw yesterday.

What I will write in the next lines it’s only my opinion, but I have to write my thoughts and feelings or I will explode. So I apologize in advance for my harshness, but I’m shocked.

I’m a big Marvel and Thor Fan, especially a Thor fan: I’ve read every comics related to the God of thunder and watched every Marvel film to date, and for me this is the worse Marvel film of all. By far.

It’s all a joke. A nonsense joke after another nonsense joke. Nothing it’s taken seriously. Nothing.

There are two or three moments that would have to be epic, but a useless gag ruined all these scenes. NO drama. NEVER.

GOTG it’s more dramatic, by a mile.

I don’t understand how a Thor fan can appreciate this film.

It’s a humiliation: an humiliation for the character, the franchise and for Hulk too.

I’ll never forgive taika waititi for what he did in this film transforming Thor in a ridiculous comedy (not funny at all, I relly don’t understand people saying that the jokes were not forced), where the hero and all the task act like a clown for 2 hours.

This is really Ragnarok: it’s the end of Thor.

What a waste. 10 years of waiting for watch this arc on the big screen, and I was never so disappointed for a film despite the fact I was prepared for the sarcastic tone of the movie.

This film is BY FAR the most childish movie of Marvel franchise and I can’t understand how an adult man can appreciate Thor Raganarok: the age target is 12-17 years old.

Free thoughts without a specific order (with no spoilers):

- Surtur it s a CGI mess.
- Skurge it’s a joke
- A lot of scenes have been reshooted, and it s easy to note it
- Anthony Hopkins loses all his nobility and presence.
- Korg it’s a cancer. Ruined ALL the scenes, included the most dramatic one
- Joke after joke after joke. Problably 30-40 joke in all the movie, one every 3 minutes.
- Grandmaster it’s the most annoying character ever.
- Some scenes were really embarrassing, worthy of the worst B-movie.

Sorry for this outburst, but I have to write it all for vent all my frustration.

2 hours of pain and nausea. What a waste. I’ll never forgive Waitiki and Disney for turning Thor and all his world into an embarrassing joke.

I underline this is only MY OWN OPINION, I respect all the good reviews read so far, but I can’t understand them.
If you have some question or if you want to debate, I’m here. Maybe sharing my disappointment
(Sorry for my bad English, I’m Italian)
You make good points. I just saw the film with my dad, I give it a 5 and in my opinion Thor Ragnarok is the worst film in the trilogy. I hate that none of the human characters from the previous Thor films are in this or referenced to that much. Aside from one throwaway line.

Plus I liked the romance between Thor and Jane Foster in Thor and Thor the Dark World. Could have had in mentioned they were still together.

Too many jokes, I hate the change in tone. I preferred the tone in the other 2 Thor films over this, this film was like a bad version of GOTG.

Hulk was great in this film, but I hate how it looks like the god awful romance with Bruce and Natasha is going to be continued, just end it and have Bruce get together with Valkyrie.

Thanks for the imput, don't forget to vote bro, all votes counts.

First time I saw this movie, I did think to myself 'man this movie really doesn't care about fans of the first two'. Now personally that didn't bother me, but I can see why some people aren't digging the radical shift in tone and characters.

I mean, they dumped the whole 'Mjolnir makes you worthy' stuff too.

But still.. I loved it because it was so risky and such a coming of age flick for Thor, that works in a way it only could for him...

Am curious to see the long term fan reaction to this.

as long as it's enjoyable and makes 'boatloads' of money it will be considered a success.

Green is still hollywoods favorite color.

I hear it's well liked and will make that'boatload'.

In the words of J. Jonah Jameson "Thanks for the good news".

I've never had that. I've had people clap at the end of really great movies a couple times, but that's about it.

It's probably regional. Where I am, people will applaud trailers. And talk back. (the reaction to the "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter" trailer was memorable, ha!)

It was bad news for me and a really big negative about the film as I feel there should be closure for those characters. Heck it's one of the reasons I'm writing a fix-it fanfic set after Ragnarok in which Thor and Jane never break up in the first place.

My review.
Thor Ragnarok is first and foremost a Taika Waititi film. He is the one pulling the strings behind the curtain and does an awesome job at that. The biggest strength of this movie is not the action or the comedy… it’s the character work and the way Taika extracted so much out of his cast while infused with his particular brand of humor and his own sensibility. His characters shine through even though some of them don’t really have that much to do. He still manages to make them relevant and appealing to us the general audience even though we barely know most of the new ones.

Yes the comedy is also on point. It’s genuinely funny. But most of the times it’s what i can call a “smile humor” not necessarily a laugh out loud humor which there is also a healthy dose of that in the movie as well. Taika’s humor makes you happy, makes you smile, feel good and really appreciate the subtle nuances. There are also definitely some big laughs and high notes the movie hits which makes the audience bust laughing out loud. And as always his humor is very much situational, it’s a more natural sort of humor, more of the moment, the awkwardness of the situation, it’s not mean spirited, it just flows… It’s something in many ways unique to Taika Waititi’s style.

The action is great. There’s more than plenty of it and it delivers when it needs to. Thor definitely steals the show on that department. There are some pretty inventive and interesting styles, moves… This movie totally owns the previous Thor movies in terms of action. There are some pretty Epic scenes and shots that are basically unforgettable. Stuff that i could have never dreamed of. Trully next level stuff.

The pacing is lighting quick. I truly lost track of time because i was having such a blast and the movie itself moves like no one’s business. Sometimes it does move to quickly, it could have had some more breathing time in some areas… Just buckle your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. It’s not messy but you/i really need to be paying attention and even then i probably need more than 1 viewing to be able to comprehend and really flesh out everything that just happened. For these reasons, and add to that the great character moments, the action, the amount of fun and good time one has while watching this and i feel the movie has a strong rewatchability factor.

A big shoutout to the soundtrack and Mark Mothersbaugh. Top-notch work from him. It has so much energy, attitude, playfulness, strong vibes… I LOVED IT! Add to that the other music that is featured during the movie and you have an epic combination in my book. Made me so happy!

The visuals we’re for the most part great too. Asgard never looked better. Sakaar is just such a cool concept, the colors are vibrant, the overall look is pretty amazing and interesting. I wish we had seen more of it. Muspelheim looked as i expected it to look. The stuff on Earth is ok.

In terms of the characters… And regarding our heroes:
Thor - The star of the movie. Chris Hemsworth is Thor and vice-versa. He is so much more cool, relatable, charismatic, funny…
Hulk - The best we have seen of him and his characterization. The way he behaves, talks… It’s amazing, funny, endearing… The audience loved him. Great CGI/motion capture work.
Banner - Shows up and immediately adds another level of greatness. His and Hulks banter with Thor and Valkyrie is so cool, crazy and sweet.
Valkyrie - Her introduction was gold. She is truly a badass, charismatic and someone you just don’t want mess with.
Loki - A different side of him but at the same time totally believable side. Sometimes more vulnerable others just the plain old Loki. Thor and Loki relationship is just special.
Korg - Steals the show. Totally chilled, innocent, naive… He brings a lot of soul.
Heimdall - We see some more badassery from him and some cool touch to his set of powers/skills. His “rasta” look totally suits him.
…

Regarding our villains:
Hela - Ruthless. Beautiful. Menacing. Sexy. OP as hell… Some of the stuff Hela did truly shocked me. For what was asked of Cate Blanchett she totally delivered. Totally understand some of the issues people had with the time given to her, what she did…
The Grandmaster - 10 out of 10 Goldblums.
Surtur - I am a massive fan of that character and i personally loved him. There’s quite a OMG moment with him. The Muspelheim stuff was Gold too.
Fenris - Looked great and was a cool idea having him show up. Could have seen more of him.
“Skurge” - It worked for me. His introduction was pretty hilarious. Also could have seen more of him.

In the end of the day it’s not a perfect movie. There are some pacing issues, some character development for the villain that was most likely shelved because of the runtime of the movie and because it’s not something Marvel really focuses on. Other characters could have had a bit more screen time. Some of the stuff was too convenient… But it didn’t bothered me that much. On the other side of the coin and as i explained plenty previously the movie is truly a triumph in so many levels. It’s awesome, a blast and a ton of fun at the theatre. I give it a solid 9 out of 10. And it’s easily one of the best and most enjoyable Marvel movies(Top 3) in my book.

Nice review HD. I'll wait until I've gotten some sleep, although with the nice user reviews we have already have here now I guess it's not that necessary. :)

Hammerdown, how would you rank the MCU movies?
Top 5 for me.

1. Avengers
2. Thor Ragnarok
3. GOTG
4. Captain America: WS
5. Iron Man

I guess it would be something around those lines. More or less.

Oh and by the way let me just say that this movie has also several heartfelt/emotional moments, some "heavy" and drastic scenes... It may be labeled as a "fun" movie and it is but there are some dark and heavy hitting stuff sprinkled throughout. And it will totally "disarm" you like it did to me.

In no particular order, my current favorites (not best, just personal favorites):

The Avengers
Ant-Man
Thor: Ragnarok
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Tie between Homecoming, Age of Ultron and GOTG

3. Captain America:The Winter Soldier (9.5/10)
4. Guardians of the Galaxy (9/10)
5. Iron Man (9/10)
6. Thor: Ragnarok (9/10) *still need to rewatch as I can't decide if I like this more than GotG 1 and IM 1 at the moment*

I very much appreciate it. Scary to see this near Iron Man 3 level for you, as that has been my fear all along. The more I hear about this movie, the more I think: Iron Man 3 all over again. Several people in these threads assure me that the two are nothing alike though.

What I do find interesting is you have Guardians 2 so high when I have heard that one is nothing but constant comedy as well. I passed on seeing that one for that reason, but what makes Ragnarok and Guardians 2 so different if you don't mind my asking?

I felt Ragnarok had too much humor at times and was trying too hard to be like a Guardians film, plus the lack of the human characters from other films hurt it as did a lack of closure for those characters.

As well as what looks like the god awful romance between Bruce and Natasha from Age Of Ultron looking like it will be continued in the future.

And having it said Thor and Jane broke up, they could have Thor mention they're still together, just with Thor busy looking for info out there on the Infinity Stones.

Yeah, that random romance between Black Widow and Hulk is flat out absurd. No one buys it at all. It's the most forced thing ever. I liked Age of Ultron aside from Iron Man beating Hulk in a fist fight straight up and Hulk and Black Widow being a couple. Oh, and the fastest superhero on the planet who can outrun anything dying from...bullets. Haha, wow that movie included some really, really bad writing.

Thanks for your response. I'm leaning toward passing on this one. Nothing worse than sitting through a film you were anticipating only to find they made a mockery of the material like Iron Man 3.

You've been talking about passing on this films for weeks now, we get it lol just don't go see it.

It's okay, nobody's gonna be bothered by it not Marvel Studios, not Taika, not us, not anyone you have that right brother.
