But Mangold obviously is aware that people want an uber-violent Wolverine, so he must have gone beyond the rating in certain scenes then held them back.

An R-rated Wolverine will never be released in cinemas, because kids like Wolverine too. And probably because it would lead to lower box office because you are excluding family audiences.

Also we aren't talking about a couple of minutes here. 10-12mins is a lot of film. Second, I am of the belief that creativity and visions is the most important part. If he filmed scene

I know its a bit of a shame we dont get this version in the cinema but at least we ARE getting this version too, its win win, as long as the film is decent in the first place of course.

100% Correct. The mansion scene with Wolverine was re-edited...All they had to do was make a quick cut to Iceman when Wolverine stabs the soldier into teh fridge.

And Singer said they didn't cut anything else. They just edited the sound in the scenes. Apparently it was a little more...wet and crunchy lol

Especially considering Mangold is the type of director to not film scenes with ratings in mind. He said he brought that mentality to Wolverine. Not sure what the issue some people have with this is. It's like they're implying he doesn't know what he's doing and wasted money filming stuff for the hell of it.

Mangold probably thought it was better to film an R-rated movie and have to make cuts (that could potentially be restored later) than to film a PG-13 movie and not have the extra footage that fans might want on home release, it's a smart move.

Studios, producers and directors have a very good idea of what will be within the rating they are aiming for, yes. But the final decision isn't down to them.

In this case, I know the UK censors (BBFC) passed the film (as 12A here in the UK, meaning anyone under 12 must see the film with an adult) without it needing any cuts. So Mangold delivered a final edit of the film that met the rating the studio required.

It seems likely he made the movie he wanted to make, judging from his comments about the studio being very accommodating, but I agree he would have known that he was filming some scenes that would not make the final theatrical cut and would not fit the rating. Maybe they didn't know at first if they would also release an R version theatrically, or just on Blu-ray. But it's good that he went ahead and filmed those uber-violent scenes rather than just cutting them from the script and never filming them at all.

I don't think there's any problem with having extra material for a Blu-ray. It's not like this is the first time we will ever get an extended cut or a special R-rated cut of a movie. It happens quite often.

If I recall correctly Mangold himself said they doubled up on several scenes, filming both cleaner & more graphic versions of the same scenes with the hopes of releasing an unrated DVD down the line.

I'm glad they did it that way, it means the scenes flow as smooth & as complete as possible with no jarring cuts in the PG13 version, and is as intense and real as an R-rated scene needs without adding in CGI blood and ADR'd swearing. Both versions will be intact "from the ground up", because right from the actors performances to the editing later on, everyone will be clear on what they're aiming at.

Just see the PG-13 version in theatres and then buy or rent the Unrated version on blu-ray and decide for yourself which one is better. Simple as that.

Haha, yes. Ill be with my girlfriend and possibly another friend, Ill just have a red X-men shirt on, and she will be in some kind of wolverine get up lol.

I have NO idea what to expect... I think I'm going to try and arrive into NY around 2:30 the latest, and maybe Noon the earliest. Im just gonna wing it and hopefully theres not too much clutter with lines and crowds.

So is there going to be red carpet stuff? I wasn't sure what they were doing. I figured since its a fan event, it would likely be smaller, more private thing.

Apparently Jackman is doing Letterman at around 5 pm or so. and I guess he will hop over to us around 6 maybe? Since the movie is at 7.

Wow! So surprises in store eh? haha. I figure there will be a ton of people. Im worried about afterward since I have to catch a train around 10:30 or 11:30 the latest. Hopefully theres no "after party" type shenanigans I wouldn't want to miss, or some kind of special Q&A... I'm clueless here lol. I don't know what to expect!
