Mortal Kombat is still the most viewed new movie from HBO max. That’s surprising.

Most viewed in its opening weekend. But I was surprised by that as well. Figured it was either WW84 or GvK.

R rated or not, people are going to see the movie the theaters if they want to. I'm sure covid is still a major factor for a lot of people. However, Birds of Prey also opened low and that was a month before cinemas closed.

Also more than 50% in U.S. have been vaccinated while iirc, 70% of Canada's population have been vaccinated as well. I'm not sure people watched f9, A Quiet Place Part II and Black Widow decided to skip The Suicide Squad because of the Delta variant.

WW84 opened back when half of theaters were closed (including LA and NYC) and a vaccine wasn't available and still only made 9m less than TSS on OW

Delta is an easy scapegoat. Also HBO Max isn't some Disney+ behemoth where it could severely dent a movie's theater gross

The difference between HBO Max and Disney+ PA is that while both will suffer from piracy, Disney will make money while HBO doesn't.

Yeah which makes me wonder if releasing these movies in Hbo MaX straight away without an additional fee is worth it. Plus Like someone said, HBO MaX isn't as popular as D+, subscribers wise.

I still don't get why Birds of Prey cost less than 100 million, then this doubled the budget of that movie and some more. I feel like WB can be really generous with the budget of their tentpole movies.

It's simply not as widely available worldwide and opening up in new countries has been delayed even more. They'll never catch up to Disney+, especially how much content there is now with the Star addition. Way more than Netflix in Finland for example.

My country doesn't have both Disney+ and HBO MaX, but we still have HBO Go which I think these newer Wb movies are available for streaming. I still see online ads for that app.

Not surprised at all at the terrible boxoffice numbers, but absolutely stunned at the B+ Cinemascore.

I actually thought this would do good and be a big hit of the summer but man I did not expect this at all.

I think the Delta variant really effected the film in major markets which many are going back under lockdown restrictions. When we were in Vegas a week ago they just reinstated mask mandates everywhere the day we left, I'm sure NY and Cali are back under similar restrictions. That and the R rating probably limited the potential audience. I thought the film was awful, so I am not surprised by the low cinemascore. There's no real story no real connection threads between the characters. This is just random cardboard characters that get together and the movie is totally reliant on shocking deaths and body mutilation, and off color humor in place of an actual plot. It think every thing combined to make this an absolute box office bomb.

The delta variant didn't cause Jungle Cruise to drop like a rock at the boX office. Its 2nd weekend drop is 55% vs Black Widow's 67%.

Jungle Cruise had a similar opening to Rampage, another non-sequel starring The Rock.

WB has to stop pumping up the budgets for their films.

This movie was never going to make a billion dollars. Imagine if they’d spent half the amount of money on it and cut some of the more CGI heavy scenes.

At least, TSS is holding very well in overseas markets, which indicates good WOM.

Still, this well-reviewed James Gunn-helmed franchise entry had a strong -25% hold in its already opened overseas markets, and notably landed No. 1 bows in Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Italy (Japan is due to release on August 13).

In comparison
Disney’s Jungle Cruise (which is still awaiting a China date) saw a 44% drop from opening weekend with midweeks having risen from Monday-Wednesday.

‘The Suicide Squad’ Misses Mark At $72M Global Box Office Bow – Deadline

I wonder if the execs thought well the last one made close to a billion and now we have a fan favorite director from marvel and a great script so lets write a blank check. Im not sure what they could have cut in the VFX to save money as all the vfx worked in favor of the story. From what I could tell maybe they could have done more physical props like weasel and king shark throughout the movie but even then would it have saved them $50 mil or more?

I thought the title was too similar to the original co workers of mine didn't even bother to see a trailer for it csuse they thought it was the same movie I tend to not interact with such people but I have to for 8 hrs a day

Falcon looked expensive because of the flying effects and location shooting. But surprised WV cost so much, especially since even the finale wasn’t that FX heavy.

CGI isn't the only thing that costs money. Props sets and costuming also cost money. . . especially when you effectively have to redo the entire lot of them each episode due to the central gimmick. That probably ate up a ton of budget.

You can't compare the situations on covid, because again, things have changed drastically since Black Widow's opening. I know for myself, as more info on the Delta variant came out, I started trying to be safer again, even when I am fully vaccinated. Because not only has delta started to rage out of control, the information that started to come out about it was also much, much scarier.

As much as I love Birds of Prey, attempting to market it was a herculean task.

Not sure if it would have made a difference, but I would have gone with a different title, maybe Task Force X.

Also, I think this suffered with the same problem that BOP did. The trailers for both were trying to sell the film as sort of dark comedies but a) they were not funny and b) even though the films are rated R the trailers didn't really make the films seem "adult" enough so you had a confusing signal as to who exactly these films were targetting.

I have no idea how WB approved a $200 million budget for this. I think they overestimated Gunn's popularity based on the outcry over his firing from Vol. 3 back in 2018. People were more upset at the reason why he was fired as well as the Guardians movies losing their creative leader, not as much because they were big fans of Gunn. They really leaned on his name in marketing whereas the general public doesn't know who he is unless you say that he directed Guardians of the Galaxy.

Besides that, I'm still trying to think where the hell the budget all went to. Yes, there was plenty of CGI but besides King Shark, Starro and Weasel it's not like it was all that extensive. There were plenty of explosions, gory makeup (or just full body makeup in Mongal's case) and costumes but most of the costumes were deliberately cheap and corny-looking with the exceptions really being Harley's first outfit and Bloodsport's outfit. That leaves the actors. Now I'm sure a few of them commanded a big paycheck like Viola Davis (being an Oscar winner), Margot Robbie (being an Oscar nominee as well as it being her third time playing Harley), Elba, Cena, and Stallone (though he probably didn't make as much as he normally would considering it was just a voice role), but I seriously doubt any of them were making Robert Downey Jr. money.
