The Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation

For DCEU placement for me, it is closer to the top. I haven't ranked these movies in a while and I would maybe want to revisit Shazam before doing that, but The Suicide Squad I would say off hand prob makes my top 3.
I'm still pissed about WW84, I'm thinking I'm not going to like the third film if this is what Patty wants. Shazam was ok, but it was too tonally inconsistent for my taste. After the Snyder stuff and first WW film the DCEU seems incredibly safe and bland outside of TSS. So to that extent I guess I like what Gunn did to buck the trend. Still wasn't blown away by it tho, the first half and middle was BRUTAL to watch. It just draaaaaagged.

I didn't hate it , and I didn't love it either. The first half and middle was eye crossingly boring and unfunny. The only thing I genuinely liked was the last 40 minutes or so. However I did love Bloodsport (he should have been Bronze Tiger, or Black Spider. But whatever I guess), Ratcatcher 2, and Harley. I hated they killed boomerang, I think that was a bad call imo. All in all, my feelings are about the same as the first film. Basically it's just AIGHT. Definitely better than WW84 and BoP tho lol.
I also wanted to add that Viola Davis is really good at playing a dangerously pragmatic government goon. What I didn't like was how there was no repercussions for her being knocked out. No way would that slide! Lol

For me, this is pretty much #2 right under Wonder Woman for best in the DCEU. Just watched it a 3rd time.

I'm pretty surprised the GA seems to be less into this than GOTG. It's probably just me, but I'm pretty burnt on the MCU, so I felt like this was refreshing with all the characters and gore and stuff like that.
It felt very much like Guardians, only with gore. Gore doesn't make things fresh for me. So it's kinda surprising a person can be burnt on MCU and enjoy a very MCU flick, only set in the DC universe.

It feels like Warners just came to Gunn and said: make us Guardians.

I disagree, but to each their own. I feel like the humor and stuff like that with the Guardians movies is much more forced on us than it is here. You can tell Gunn was allowed to go all out with this one.

People keep saying that this is Guardians but with gore. No it isnt lol. This is NOT Guardians of the Galaxy, people. GotG was Star Wars. This was a 70s grindhouse midnight B movie but with a near 200 million budget. Midnight B movies are not for everyone.

I have to agree with this unfortunately. It's basically GOTG but with blood and guts. Like it was said before, the last 30 minutes of the movie was ok but overall just a Marvel film with over the top violence and dumb potty humor. Which I was afraid of it being. I just wish Gunn would go back to his own original projects tbh. That's where he shines the best.

There was nothing Star Warsy about GOTG. It was more so Red Dwarf than SW. There was no sense of adventure, or space opera. It was a sitcom in out of space. The aesthetics of TSS was definitely different from GOTG tho. But tonally was still in the wheelhouse of the first GOTG. Fwiw I love grindhouse films.

The one similarity i’ll concede to is Gunn’s humor. Which was hit or miss. Gunn brought over some of that MCU off script-ad libby humor that is prevalent in all their films now. Admittedly it took me a but to adjust to that because im not used to that in DC films lol

Yeah GOTG is not Star Wars...it was a film trying to be Star Wars but was, as Madam-Shogun said, a sitcom. The whole thing was one big trope...you could even feel where the laugh track was supposed to be. It is why I have never been able to watch it a second time and never cared that I didn't see the second one. And the GOTG parts ruined the last two Avengers films...

From everything Gunn said about this he was basically following Ostrander's vision of The Dirty Dozen with villains. That is not going to be kid friendly.

I don't dislike the Guardians films, but they were never films I watched and went "this is a top 10 cbm". I enjoyed the first one, and didn't care for the second. TSS, for some reason, I enjoyed more than both of those. Maybe it's that Gunn was able to fully be himself here. I think I've only seen the guardians movies twice, while I've watched TSS 3 times so far.

While the middle dragged ass with that HQ Courting stuff the book ends of movie were excellent 2nd favorite DC movue behind man of steel easily

1. THE Suicide Squad 5/5
2. Shazam! 5/5
3. Birds of Prey 3.5/5
4. Man of Steel 2.5/5
5. Suicide Squad 2/5
6. Justice League: The Snyder Cut 2/5
7. Aquaman 2/5
8. Wonder Woman 2/5
9. Wonder Woman 1984 1.5/5
10. Justice League 1/5
11. Batman Verses Superman Colon Dawn of Justice 0.5/5

I wanted Elba to be Bronze Tiger as well. However, I think the reason he was Bloodsport is they wanted him to start out as more of an unrepentent "villain" to get him to be a more noble, altruistic character later on.
