I don't think Slott's being "desperate" for sales... the book sells well on its own merit... I think he's just using new technology to promote his stories... and since this is the "infancy" of such technology, it's just comes across as "weird" and/or "different"... especially to us old timers...

Personally, I have no idea how twitter even works... except that people say things, and other people apparently care enough to hear what these people are saying...

I know what you mean. But, I must give Slott credit for using the latest social media to promote a comic.As a writer, I'm told that I must get a Facebook account, Twitter and a few more just to cover my bases, so Slott is doing what is now the way to go for writers, artists, athletes, etc.Marvel was very big among college students back in the 60's and 70's, back then it was word of mouth and social gatherings(parties,clubs,etc.) Now Marvel is using social media.It's the Digital Age of comics and comic book promotion.

It's also a case of "crying wolf." If you claim every six months that an issue will CHANGE EVERYTHING, then when you do actually believe an issue might (as Slott may believe about #20) no one believes you anymore.

Plus I would imagine, depending upon the writer, they would rather control how the upcoming story arcs are being revealed.Obviously, Marvel doesn't mind Slotts' cyber interactions with his readers.

Hi Dan. Nice to see you on the board again.

As I said previously, I really enjoyed your recent Raft story. I think Superior has breathed new life into the Spidey books (and I'm sorry about the dig at your dialogue ).

I did say the hype comes about every six months, and Superior's only been going on for that long. But I distinctly remember events getting regularly hyped as game-changers or as "things will never be the same in the Spider-verse", etc. I recall that happening for Grim Hunt, Spider-Island, Big Time and others. Then of course you promised the "internet would crack in half" with ASM#700. And then there was this, just a few months ago, which I guess is what you were asking for in your post. I think it fits the "crying wolf" request:

But no one was really angry. I was a bit angry it wasn't a two-parter. I thought the fight felt a little rushed. But I wasn't sad about saying goodbye to Ghost Spidey.

(In an interview with Newsarama, you also promised a massive status quo change with #14 and while I welcome status quo changes, I feel like none are truly lasting since they seem to occur every few months now)

Anyway, keep up the good work. Despite hating hype in general (not just in comics, but for video-games, TV shows, anything), you have piqued my interest for Superior #20 and I'll pick it up.

Wasn't it said in an interview that it wasn't Slott's idea to have Ghost Pete for a while before they get rid of him? If so that's a pretty interesting tidbit given that some people seem to really like that particular issue.

I wonder what brings Miguel to our timeline. It'll probably create cracks in time since AoUltron apparently borked things up with all the alt time lines pretty significantly, so this might reintroduce 2099 characters or have some universal instability (isolated time shifts?) becoming the status quo.

I dont think Spider-Man 2099 is so amazingly popular. He has more of a cult following.

He is by no means insanely popular but most people seem to still prefer him over Spider-Slott.

I edited my post prior to your response. What I meant to say was that it seems like most fans would prefer him. Obviously I have no way of knowing that unless I go out there and ask every single person but it is what I have observed.

From my personal experience, not too many people like Superior. Every website I went on too either gave it negative or mixed reviews (and rightfully so IMO). I even hear that Slott is increasingly getting threats because of it.

Can't say I've seen an outpouring for 2099 over Superior much myself.

Speaking of 2099 Spider-man. I wouldn't mind seeing him receive a costume upgrade. I mean we've already seen two new costumes under Superior for normal Spidey. I think it would be interesting to see what they could do with 2099.

Did this kind of backlash happen when they killed Superman? I know it didn't with Batman because it was the Almighty Morrison who can do no wrong whatever but this isn't the first time a major character has died. I just can't remember death threats over any of the previous ones.

A side story: Back when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was writing the Sherlock Holmes stories, they were published in newspapers as serials. When Doyle killed off Prof Moriarity, the reader backlash was so great that he was forced to find a way to bring him back.

Some things never change.
