Just got caught up on eps 5, 6 and 7. Really enjoyed all 3. It was especially good seeing them expand on the back story and go into the history of the Eye of Thunderra and stuff. Nice to see the inclusion of dogs, monkeys and vultures and even, sharks, although the elephtants seemed a bit random. Really liked the little sammophlange bit as well, that was a cool, little nod.
At first I thought it was a bit.. "higgeldy-piggeldy" with the series' portrayal of technology - one moment it seemed to be a myth then the next they're not shocked by it or know it's name and stuff. But it's starting to make sense... The cats had access to technology and when they crashed on Third Earth, they obviously had to start from scratch and that's why we see them at an almost medievil type society. It's pretty cool how it's starting to all fall into place.
My guess is that after they had crash landed they started to build settlements together but they soon started fighting over the stones until, finally, the species went their seperate ways. The lizards seem to have kept the tech, maybe the dogs, monkeys and vultures each took a stone and the lizards were left with the tech.
So, it seems to me, they have followed and then expanded upon the basic premise/idea from the original series, of the Cats and then the Mutants (lizards, jackals/dogs, monkeys and vultures) coming to Third Earth from another planet. I wonder if there is a point in the story where they come back and reveal what happens after the crash of the pyramid, if they show any native species on Third Earth. Presumably the fish characters from the Ramlak ep and the Petlars, among others not introduced yet, will be native but they had monkeys on Mumm-Ra's pyramid ship, so, presumably there won't be any native apes on Third Earth.
One thing I have noticed is there seems to be more variation in the Cat species than the other animals. There was a lot of generic looking background cats in the first episode but we have lions, tigers, panthers, cheeters, kittens.... Whereas the other species seem to all look fairly the same with no sort of characteristics or 'sub-species'. The lizards also have some differences. I guess this is mostly due to there not being any episodes that have focused on the other species as yet but I think it would be a bit of a flaw if it wasn't addressed in some capacity at some point... I mean, for example, when we finally meet Monkian, they wouldn't have to have lots of different monkey characters but they could show chimps, gorillas, orangutans within his army.
I'm sure the dogs will pop up again (dogs of war anyone?) as I'm sure most species will at some point but one thing I wonder regarding the dogs is if the race will encompass all Canis type family members ie dogs, wolves, jackals etc or if the dogs will simply be one race, seperate from the Jackals. It's just a little thought I had 'cos in the Legacy episode I'm sure I heard the dog slaves also reffered to as jackals..
