I don't think that is necessary but Zemo needs to appear if there is a sequel.

How are you gonna explain why this new team is called "Thunderbolts" without sounding contrived, though? Was Zemo also on Yelena's childhood baseball team?

Well I am not asking for a faithful Thunderbolts movie with no asterisk to happen. Though I'm sure, any good creative could come up with a good reason to use Thunderbolts again. There's plenty of comic book titles that recycle the same name.

Well I assume the comment is about making a future movie about a team that officially brands themselves as "The Thunderbolts", unlike in this movie where it was mainly just Red Guardian's nickname for the unofficial group until they officially branded themselves as "The New Avengers".

But there isn't really any in-universe reason for that to happen organically. The MCU kinda goes out of its way to make "Thunderbolts" into a throwaway nickname. Any re-use of the Thunderbolts name would basically have to be a completely unrelated team that uses the name by pure coincidence.

Regardless of what they get casually rebranded as in the ending. Nothing stops the team to go back to their roots and call themselves Thunderbolts again, either. Or for Valentina to steal the name for a future team.

It's weird to see people so obsessed with the concept of the title instead of focusing on the movie itself.

They are probably better off doing a different movie, than make "Thunderbolts" an actual franchise. The new title gives me the impression, that Feige doesn't want this to be an ongoing movie franchise like GOTG.

I mean, they are called the Thunderbolts because Thunderbolt Ross is the guy who created the team originally. But the MCU version of Ross is now a disgraced ex-President who is now in prison after turning into a red Hulk. So them keeping that name doesn't really make any sense.

Going of the post credits scene, I could maybe see them adopting the Dark Avengers moniker down the line if they decide to differentiate themselves from Sam's Avengers team. Especially if the team were to revert back to more of black ops thing.

I can see them going back to Thunderbolts as a homage to the Red Guardian if/when he gets killed off or break away from Val.

No, they are called Thunderbolts because that's the name Zemo came up with. Ross had nothing to do with the team until the 2013 run.

The team they had for the team is quite small, for a lot of them to stay in the very long run of the MCU. Maybe we would see 1 to 3 in Avengers 7/8, but the group aren't composed of super popular Marvel characters.

Box office wise, I don't really see Disney being that encouraged for a sequel, when all things are said and done. This and Brave New World have the same budget of 180 million, well according to Disney.

They're in the next Avengers movie, and Marvel clearly has future plans for them, regardless of the personal preferences of people on this forum.

The movie has an uphill battle to begin with (since audiences don't trust the studio the way they used to) and no nostalgia to coast on, but word of mouth is great and I'm sure that Feige and Co. will take note of that.
