The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending - Part 1

The movie ain't getting 18 million off of a 6.39 million Friday, try 16ish, maybe 17ish Lower than ****ing Speed Racer boys.

You wanna know why I'm not at the theater right now? Because the theater I am going to decided that they wanted to put the one morning show in ****ing 3D and I hate 3D and no ****ing way am I spending 3D cash on Jupiter Ascending. Afternoon it is.
:lmao:

I do give the film credit for genuinely being a little weird. I just wish the Wachowskis didn't allow every little idea into the film. The film needed focus, the right lead actors and a scarier big bad.

Also Channing Tatum on magical skates isn't a cool idea, it's goofy and terrible. It's 2015, not 1985.

When I was an itty bitty Spidey I sooo wanted a BTTF Hoverboard. That hoverboard is awesome.

This movie was AWESOME. :wow:
Seriously, 9/10 for me - and on repeat viewings when I own it, it might get higher.

I will say though, I'm convinced that you're either a Wachowski person or you're not, and if you are, this movie is a geek-fest to the nth degree and it's totally up your alley. If you hated The Matrix Sequels, if you hated Speed Racer, if you hated Cloud Atlas, this is absolutely NOT for you. But, personally being a huge fan of all those movies, I loved every single minute of Jupiter Ascending.

So, it really comes down to this: If you don't like the Post-1999 films that the Wachowskis have offered, avoid this like the plague. But, for MY money, I was in total heaven from start to finish. I absolutely loved it.

It's a similar situation I've had with Blackhat - you're either a Michael Mann person or you're not, and since I am, that movie is a masterpiece to me.

Welp, looks like they might as well have released this last summer. It probably would have made a bit more money. And they would have saved a bit on marketing.

:o

What if you just like good movies? :oldrazz:

So, those who've seen it: is it true that a flirting scene includes the line "my bowels aren't royalty"?

That's a trolling post so I don't find that it's worth answering seriously. But I'll include this smiley: :yay:
I think it is pretty bizarre to say you need to be a Wachowskis or Mann "person" to like their films. That would imply you either like them all, or you don't. What about us to like some of their films but not others? What if you are one of those people who actually take a movie for what it is, and not just love it because of the name on the tin?

This is one of those movies that was gonna killed by everyone no matter when it got released. I think for the wachowskis if this bombs its ethier another matrix movie or game over.

I get how someone can be a "Wachowski person" post-The Matrix, but I don't get how someone can be a "Mann person". The dude has a solid resume other than one or two films. Miami Vice wasn't even a bad movie.

Right. I don't like every film by every director I think is decent. This all or nothing fanboyism annoys the **** out of me.

Michael Bay is my perfect example. I don't like the vast majority of his work, but I adore "Pain and Gain" and have always liked "The Rock".

Yes, yes it is.

What a mess of a movie. I can't say I'm disappointed as that is exactly what I expected.

I was actually down with this movie for a little bit. It was silly and heightened but everything through and including chase through the streets of Chicago really worked for me.

From there though its just an endless line of people explaining to Jupiter exactly who they are and what their intents are.

Jupiter is written to aggressively do nothing. At any opportunity that she is given to be an active agent in her own story, she chooses to do nothing. They even have a moment in which they try to play off of that and finally have her make a decision but she just re-damselizes her self.

Other than the aforementioned Chicago chase, the action in this movie is pretty bad, which is disheartening to see from the Wachowskis. The editing of this film makes no sense, as if in several scenes someone suddenly hit a skip ahead button on a DVD.

There is one fight scene that starts and then without warning just cuts to the end of the fight.

Channing Tatum I actually thought did an okay job with what he was given. I don't think at all that he was "miscast". Kunis though cannot carry this movie. Its not all her fault as she's not given much good to work with but she still seems to flounder.

This movie and its trailers lay out one its own essential problems. Jupiter herself says "I'm not special. I haven't done anything." to which Sean Bean (who has jackall to do in this movie btw) replies "Its not what you do. Its what you are." Constantly they emphasize that Jupiter doesn't have to do anything except merely exist in order to be special. Even Luke skywalker had useful skills and had to train to achieve his destiny.

There are some interesting designs but a lot of it comes off as either rehashes of ships from the matrix or costumes and locations from The Phantom Menace. All in all this movie owes a great debt to movies from 1999.

Welp, let's start here:

Did you like Miami Vice?
Did you like Public Enemies?
Did you like The Matrix Reloaded?
Did you like The Matrix Revolutions?
Did you like Speed Racer?
Did you like Cloud Atlas?

Just for the sake of argument, if you said "Yes" to ALL of these, I can't personally see how there's a chance in hell that you DIDN'T immensely enjoy Blackhat and Jupiter Ascending.

Now, my point is that Mann is not the same director now. He's a different director than he was from Heat, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans, etc.

The Wachowskis are absolutely NOT the same directors post-1999 from Bound and The Matrix.

So, if you liked their newer films, where they don't seem to be as popular and influential as they used to be, and are going for a different approach that is definitely not liked by the majority of film goers, you'll probably LIKE Blackhat and Jupiter Ascending, because it's more of that style.

It's the same with Shyamalan. If you liked everything up until 2004, you probably hate his guts. That's because he's NOT the same director now.

Is this really that hard to understand? You can't see that these directors have evolved, possibly for the worst in the eyes of many movie-goers? So you either like it or you don't. You're not getting Heat or Bound anymore.

I say watch it. Might as well finish the series. Also if nothing else, the finale showdown between Neo and Smith is pretty good.

Thank you for recommending I go through with this, I think I've just heard the best line of this trilogy.

Cookies need love like everything does.

:funny:

The Chicago chase is certainly evocative of the imagery in Speed Racer. Never again is Jupiter Ascending that fun or as well put together however.

I see people talking about 3d. Was this movie even released in 3d?

It has been so long since I watched Revolutions all the way through, I honestly can't remember that line. I now must look for it. :woot:

I hope you get as much amusement out of it as I did. :funny:

I agree that Jupiter is a rather thin character but that's where charismatic movie star skills come in. Kunis unfortunately doesn't have that it factor, she doesn't hold your interest enough as an actress. I could see say Emma Stone absolutely keeping your attention and killing it in the film but Kunis is not that kind of actress. She's the girlfriend and the best friend.

I like Reloaded, I love Speed Racer, and I like Public Enemies. Don't like the others. Why? Because they are bad films imo. Reloaded isn't a good film either imo, but it has the right amount of fun for me to enjoy it quite a bit.

Directors devolving into worst filmmakers does happen quite a bit. Not everyone can be Scorsese. But I still take each film on its own.
