The Walking Dead "The Walking Dead" General Stuff & Thaaaangs Thread - - - Part 12

Negan is one of TWD's most popular characters in the comics, and has been anticipated by fans to be on this show ever since his inception in the comics. The Governor was toned down for this show. We didn't see him make out with his zombie daughter;

wd010.jpg

We didn't see him rape Michonne repeatedly. We didn't see him cut off Rick's hand etc. The TV show's Governor was still great, but make no mistake he was toned down from his comic book version. Negan on the other hand has been lifted from the comic book page to the screen in all his swaggering ruthless glory and he's awesome.

Still wish he had taken Rick's hand, but I feel like the other two cuts were for the best.

All I can think of to keep Sasha around is if she assists the Oceanside community b/c that colony wants to stay hidden from everyone. It'll be easier for Green's schedule b/c that's the colony that seems to get the least focus anyway. They could temporarily write her off like that. However, I honestly believe that Sasha's days are numbered.:csad:
Give her Michonne's comic disappearing act?

they did tease a bit of rape with Gov and Maggie and that is all that needed to happen on that front.

Oooh! Oooh! Let me!

1. Negan is a dumb characte who doesn't translate to the screen. I've given Jeffrey Dean Morgan a lot of flak, but I'm not sure any actor can make "pee pee pants city" and "easy, peasy, lemon squeezy" not sound dumb. Like the Governor, Negan should probably have been toned down for the show. As it is now, he's like a villain thought up by a bunch of studio execs, taking the worst instincts from the 90's. "You like the Governor! Well buckle your seatbelt, 'cause Negan's in town! He's edgy! He's in your face!" He's like the Poochy of the Walking Dead. Don't be surprised if the next time we see him he's riding a skateboard down a hill, wearing sunglasses while bashing in a walker's head

2. A lot of people think Jeffrey Dean Morgan was miscast. Some because he's not particularly physically intimidating, others because they just find him to be annoying. For me, I think his performance is too one note and predictable, with little nuance. Now I know some of you like him, but I don't know how you could disagree with this assessment. I mean, you know he's going to whistle, and lean back, and emphasize every...other...word! You know he'll have that one moment where he's really serious and lowers his voice, and you think something might happen, and then he breaks into that s#it eating grin of his. I find it pretty hard to find him scary since he telegraphs everything, and I can anticipate what he's going to do next

3. Because he's so over the top, his acting stands out as being particularly jarring, since everyone else acting opposite him is giving much more restrained performances. It's like he walked in from a completely different show
.

I'm sorry, but I simply don't see the elements that you find so objectionable. Negan has shown himself to be theatrical, but that's not a hindrance to the show. In fact, it's been an invigorating injection. His modus operandi reminds me of The Joker and Violator/Clown from Spawn. It's only superficially whimsical because the motivation is every bit as sinister as the world characters like those inhabit. The character aspects like the whistling and smiling, which you might find jarring personally, actually become an effective part of the predatory mystique. Not only does Negan toy with peoples' lives, he manipulates their emotions. He's not just a villain out of necessity; he revels in it. That's why he's such a brilliant character.

Art Vandalay, I disagree with most everything you say... But... You are spot on about Negan's physical presence... in the comics he seems to be a much bigger guy, muscular, etc... JDM just isn't muscular. His performance is spot on comic wise, but his look isn't quite there.
.

This is the only valid criticism of TV Negan. Comic Negan strikes me as the all-state Defensive Tackle who could cleanly overpower the O-Lineman in front of him, but he still chooses to poke an eye, take out a knee, or administer a groin punch simply because he takes pleasure in it. When the societal parameters were removed, he bloomed from *****ebag to full-fledged monster.

JDM won't ever capture this part of the character. When he takes his jacket off, he looks like an old man. I won't dispute that. However, he's more than made up that with the malignant confidence that he's projected. He's instilled terror into the Saviors and made them, for the most part, extensions of himself. That's more intimidating than physical power. In addition, JDM sold Negan's ability with Lucille in the premiere despite his thin frame.

I beg to differ...

This season gave us the best song of all time.

I often listen to that when I'm doing cardio. It was utilized masterfully on the show. I rewatched "The Cell" a couple of days ago, and seeing something so benign inflict so much psychological damage on Daryl fit perfectly with Negan's cheery but brutal personality.

Regarding his physical presence, I guess it is what it is. But this is where I think it might have helped had they rewritten Negan. They show us all these guys, some of which look pretty tough and scary, literally bowing down to Negan who is treated as this sort of king/god. I still think that would work more if Negan himself was physically powerful looking. I keep hearing people say Negan is charismatic, but so far, everything we've seen of him involves him taunting his own people and sleeping with some of the wives of his followers. If he's some brilliant tactician we haven't seen it yet. So, it's tough to believe no one has killed him yet. I could see it if he was the biggest, most powerful person in the room, but he clearly isn't.

The thing is, they might have had a perfect Negan, but they cast him in the wrong part. Owen Harn, the guy from the Terminus container.

Looked like Negan (when the episode aired, everyone wondered if it was him), has a deep voice, and much like Jeff Kober, he's an actor who seams authentically scary and intimidating. I've seen some of his work online, and he's a more than credible actor. It would have been cool to see another unknown make a star turn. But for some reason, maybe because Negan's arc will last for at least another season, they wanted a more well known actor.

I have some mixed feelings about how The Governor was handled in the show. For instance, I was fine with them cutting all of the stuff involving The Governor repeatedly raping Michonne, but I was puzzled about why they still had Michonne go on this "revenge obsession" in the show. Didn't make much sense.

Also, I think a big reason as to why the show "tamed" the Governor is because the show was surprisingly a LOT less violent than it is now. The Walking Dead is a very violent show now all around; it's not just zombie guts anymore ... And I think the series had to "earn" the violence they can show now over the past several years, if you ask me.

I like how the show hasn't held back any punches with Negan, though. The biggest difference between TWD's two biggest baddies was kept intact in the show. I always thought that The Governor was a psycho obsessed with trying to keep his world under control, and that Negan is a psycho who has fully embraced this post-walker world for what it is.

He sent four men to hunt her down. Even though she was able to fend them off, she was shot in the leg in the middle of a forest full of walkers.

couple of things are starting to make the show less enjoyable:

- it's been a few years since the first episode and since the world stopped functioning normally, yet there still seems to be enough fuel to constantly drive different vehicles. there is only so much you can scavage.
- same goes for electricity. where are they getting it from
- in episode 7 of season 7 there is a watch on the wall, battery powered. how many batteries can one scavange.
- same goes for car parts which die from wear and tear. there is no production so things like batteries should all be running out.
- it should be more of a back to medievil survival where there are no bullets, cars, lights. back to primal survival.
- one moment its dangerous to wander around and other times people are just walking in wilderness as if its a normal situation without any danger present.
- the way the cdc guy explained how zombies work, they should be decaying just as fast as a dead human would in normal situation, so after so many years, the amount of zombies should should be declying and they should be more decomposed.

Between season 1 and 5 was probably less than 2 years total.

The first half of season 6 pretty much took place on the same day. Then a 2 month or so time jump and another short period of time until the season 6 finale. The season 7 premiere picks up the second 6 ends.

So every season isn't a new year and the timeline hasn't really reached 2 years yet or, if it has, just barely.

I believe there is one thing that keeps them from outright stating just how many days have passed:

In the comics, it becomes more like what you're going for after their war with Negan. They take a non-specific time jump, but likely 2 years. Different communities trading, horseback, Eugene is the only source of bullets, all that jazz.

It seems that Alexandria only uses cars for short runs, and I've always assumed that they've stockpiled gasoline from the plethora of abandoned vehicles that we see along the road each week. Negan's compound is vast and complex, so I've always wondered if he's got people refining his own petroleum?

Most of the vehicles look rough at this point (although some fans have caught some newer models that shouldn't be on the show) and we saw Dale's RV need parts almost from the start of the show. Rick's group has scavenged some parts and since Eugene is always building something, I assumed that he was capable of making at least some replacement parts.

You've got a point about the batteries. I guess there are a few rechargers at work, but it's probably just something the writers have glossed over.

The Walking Dead: Andrew Lincoln says 'the thrill of the fight' is back when the show returns

Entertainment Weekly said:
Get ready for another hard turn on The Walking Dead. The first half of season 7 saw the will of Rick Grimes and Co. completely broken by Negan. It was dark. It was depressing. But it is over. That’s because, by the end of the midseason finale, Rick had seen enough.

After watching Aaron get beat up and Spencer have his guts spilled out next to a pool table, Rick was back and ready to fight the big baddie. And that means we have a whole new Rick Grimes and a whole new show to look forward to when things pick back up on Feb. 12. “It’s probably the opposite of what you just witnessed,” says Andrew Lincoln of the tonal shift for the back half of the season. “Certainly from Rick’s point of view. You see a man in action again with some of the members of his closest family.”

Hearing that the battle is about to be joined is no doubt music to the ears of fans, as are these other comments Lincoln made to EW about what to expect from his character coming up. “There’s a lot more levity, if you can believe that, than you’ve ever seen before in Mr. Grimes,” says Lincoln. “There’s sort of a freedom in him, a feeling that comes from losing everything, and also the thrill of the fight. It’s the thrill of the fight again. He’s back in. All I’m saying is that the band is back together.”

Lincoln also says he personally had a blast filming the second half of season 7, now that he no longer has to cower in fear of Negan on a weekly basis. “There are several episodes that I loved being involved in and it certainly feels very much more like a show that I knew and recognized in the back eight,” he says. “I loved the episodes that I was in.”

More importantly, he predicts fans will be happy with what they see. “It’s The Magnificent Seven in the back half. Rather, the magnificent eight episodes. Wait till [episode] 16. I promise you, there is one beat in 16, I dropped my script and started punching the air and did a little jig.”

And we will leave with that image of Andrew Lincoln doing a jig to get you through the rest of the day. You’re welcome.

The Walking Dead First Look: Rick and Maggie Appeal to Gregory to 'Rise Up'

When AMC’s The Walking Dead returns for the second half of Season 7 (Sunday, Feb. 12, 9/8c), Rick, Maggie and a whole lot of other folks will be ready to “rise up” against Negan. But what our heroes are likely to find even more difficult than defeating the formidable Saviors will be convincing the most lily-livered of their potential allies — in other words, Gregory — to march into battle alongside them.

I hope someone decapitates Gregory. I can't stand that a**hole.

They're doing a good job adapting the character. He was equally obnoxious in the comics.

I've not taken to Negan like I did the Governor. Found him much more intriguing while still wanting him to get his. I just find this smirking sophomoric Negan to be annoying more than anything. I need to see him use Lucille and actually do some damage cause right now it's a lot of bluster and hot air and we see big dudes scared of him but I'm not seeing why they are. He was vicious in the premier but hasn't really done anything since.

Wonderfully put.

Governor is gonna be hard to top, and they can try all they want with Negan but it'll take a bit, for sure.

My favorite episodes of the season thus far have been episodes where Negan wasn't as big a factor or not featured at all. The Cell was such a darn good episode and it really made me like Dwight -- more than I already did from the comic.

I also agree with those that are either mixed or negative on Negan. Think his over-the-top nature hasn't exactly translated all that well and the producers obsession with him is actually hindering the show in a way.

Just kill Gregory now to get it over with. He cannot be trusted, and when push comes to shove, he will betray you. Hilltop already sees Maggie as their new leader.

The Walking Dead releases new intel and photos

Entertainment Weekly said:
The Walking Dead does not return for the second half of season 7 until Sunday, Feb. 12, but AMC has released some new images as well as an official synopsis for the next eight episodes.

As for the images, we have a very sweaty Rick Grimes surveying the highway, as well as a group shot in Gregory’s mansion at the Hilltop, and Rick leading the gang through a field.

Here’s what AMC has released as far as new intel:

The first half of Season 7 saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the group broken by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), forced to fall under his will and brutally convinced to live under his rules. The second half of the season will focus on preparing for war and gathering the supplies and numbers to take Negan down once and for all.

Rick’s group will find out yet again that the world isn’t what they thought it was. It’s much bigger than anything they’ve seen so far. While they have a singular purpose – to defeat Negan – it won’t come easy. More importantly, victory will require more than Alexandria. They need the numbers of the Kingdom and the Hilltop, but, similar to how Rick felt, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) do not want bloodshed. To convince them otherwise will take more than speeches. The lengths Rick and the group will have to go to in order to find weapons, food and new fighters is nothing short of remarkable.

We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places. We’ll see Rick and the group tested in ways we’ve never seen before. We’ll see treachery from people we trust. Rick is confident as he will see his group and many others band together with the common goal of taking down Negan. But no amount of planning will prepare the group for all-out war with Negan and his army.

The “All Out War” arc is among the most popular in The Walking Dead comics, and it looks like said war between Rick and Negan could be on the horizon.

The Walking Dead: Exclusive photo teases new character and location

Entertainment Weekly said:
Alexandria. The Hilltop. The Kingdom. Possibly even Oceanside. Some, if not all, of these communities will be banding together to take on Negan in the second half of The Walking Dead’s season 7. But is there yet another group that could join the fray?

AMC’s official synopsis for 7B said, “We’ll meet new survivors in incredible places,” and we have your exclusive first look at one of those survivors and one of those places right here. In this new photo (see the full image below), we see Rick conversing with a woman — at least it looks like a woman, judging from the back — in what appears to be a junkyard setting.

Who is she? What is the deal with her group, which you can see looking semi-menacing behind Rick? Is this junkyard their home or just an intimidating meeting spot to deal with strangers like Mr. Grimes? Also, are these people related to the mysterious stranger in the boots spying on Alexandria at the end of the midseason finale? So many questions!

Predictably, showrunner Scott M. Gimple will answer precisely none of them. But he will give us this: “I’m just going to say that Rick is going to meet this person and/or persons pretty quickly,” says Gimple. “The answers are just around the heap. I cannot wait for people to meet this character and to see this actor. There is some formidable fun coming up.”

Formidable fun? We’ll take it! While fun is not a word often bandied about on The Walking Dead, Andrew Lincoln already told us that the tone of the second half of season 7 will be dramatically different and that “the thrill of the fight” is back. How this person and group will fit into that fight remains to be seen.

They're probably connected to that stranger with the boots stalking Rick and Aaron. Their location, which looks like a junkyard, is probably where this moment happens.

Honestly this whole mysterious stranger and group is another obstacle to pad out Season 7. Just so AOW could cover the entirety of Season 8.

Also the character portraits for 7b have been released. Unfortunately, the majority of 'em are recycled with minor tweaks from the 7a character portraits. Also lacking portraits of Ezekiel and Jesus' character.

Prepare for February 12
