The Walking Dead The Walking Dead Season 5, Episode 3 "Four Walls and a Roof" Discussion Thread

I explained this before, but the fact is that people still self-segregate. If a zombie apocalypse happened today, you'd see clusters of Asian Americans, clusters of African Americans, etc.

Which reminds me, Rosita is only the second Latin, after Martinez, we've seen since the episode "Wildfire." One who gets dialogue, anyway.

And we've gotten only one fat person, "Fat Tony." :cwink:

In a world where running is a requirement several times a day and food is scarce, fat people are going to be few and far between.

Good thing we choose to suspend disbelief and enjoy the show. In a world like that, a guy like "Fat Tony" would be a liability.

Im glad you guys brought up how dumb the black characters quota joke is. It was funny wau back when with t dog but come on already, were in season 5.

It also as Heretic pointed out a realistic adaptation of group dynamics. We started with a predominately white group. That group had a few black people in it and presumably some hispanic and other asians besides Glenn but mostly white. Other groups we did not see presumably were mostly black, mostly hispanic and whatever other ethnicities you want to think up.

This is true of now. Sometimes it is enforced internally, sometimes externally but people tend to stick to "their own kind" and avoid other social groups. It's not even necessarily by race. Skin color just happens to be the easiest one to identify.

As time goes on groups thin out, they take in stragglers. Our group is now nominally white majority. Another group might be nominally black with a mix of whites, hispanics and whoever else they ran into.

We even saw a hispanic group in Atlanta, season one. They were defending the elderly people. I doubt they are the same composition now as they were then if that group still exists. Few groups can afford to be selective in the skin color of their members. The ones who are probably didn't make it very far.

At this point in survival you have to watch out for personality traits over whether someone fits your preferred social order. Taking in a cannibal when your group is not into eating other people won't be a good match as people start to mysteriously disappear while that cannibal suddenly puts on 20 pounds and has a smoke shack not too far from camp. Joining a group of psychotics with death wishes when you are sane and like to live would not be good either.

I’m glad Rick kept his word and took out Gareth with that machete with the red handle, which was a very satisfying moment.
I loved that too. The way we was gripping the handle the whole time and then you see the red wrapped around. Soo goodl

I don’t know how I feel about Maggie and Glenn taking off to WA with Abe. And so much for “anything Rick says goes” eh Glenn.
It seems that they will play with the idea of Maggie being angry at Glen for making that kind of decision without at least consulting his wife about it. I think Glen probably realized that both groups would be endangered and sticking together was the best way to handle the hunters.

And Maggie seems to be easy going about traveling to WA without showing any interest if Beth’s alive or not. Has she accepted the possibility that Beth might be dead? Seems out of character. She was willing to travel the ends of the earth to find Glenn but not her own little sister that Daryl told her was kidnapped after he last saw her.
They don't know where she is though and Beth was abducted where Glenn could have been with the groups that escaped from the prison. At least with Glen, she had a general idea. Here, Daryl followed as much as he could.

One thing did bug me. So this pastor hid in his church while a whole lot of people were trying to get in there, presumably frantically, and none of them get in. But one Termite with a knife gets through the door in a second?
Rick's group set them up.

it's my fault for being in the UK
The ****?

then going into a blow-by-blow account of every plot spoiler from the episode and for next week's teaser, assuming I hadn't yet seen it and she'd had the pleasure of ruining the whole episode for me.
What an *******.

But yeah, this is a pattern now. That's two weeks in a row that, mere hours after the airing of the episode, The Walking Dead have posted, as a bold headline, that episode's ending. Now, I'm not a fool. I don't trawl the Facebook page for TV shows or read their comments threads when I'm avoiding spoilers. But these were popping up on my feed! I follow quite a few US TV shows on Facebook to get up-to-date news, but most of them (including TDW, until now) have had the etiquette to at least wait a few days before posting episode spoilers as headlines on their pages.
I don't have fb, but that would get on my nerves too since I usually record shows and watch them a few days later.

Anyway, I liked this episode. I wonder if they will encounter the walkers at the school. They showed the glass cracking, so either it was done as a way to trick the viewer into thinking the group was making a dumb decision or it's something they'll likely face. My biggest gripe with the episode was that Bob's wound was way too big for no one to notice he wasn't hurt or bit.

always hate looking a the internet if I didn't watch a show the previous night. You have to really work hard to NOT spoil anything.

Oh myyyy...

This shows hilariously ridiculous. Ever since someone pointed out how black characters get replaced on this show I notice it all the time. As soon as the priest showed up last episode, I was like I guess this means we're losing one of the other black characters. One episode later we do.

That was true in seasons past but the show has gotten to the point now where the people of color are actually developed characters and not just a token minority to be rotated out. I feel the show deserves some credit for doing that, particularly for the back half season 4 which really took the time to flesh out all the characters.

@Sawyer
That's an interesting and somewhat disturbing parallel with the gifs of the Gov. and Rick.

Btw, that tense moment when Abe and Rick almost "duked it out" over whose group keeps that bus was another highlight, imo. Haven't seen Rick nearly butt heads with another alpha male since Shane.

I thought it was touching the moment just before Abe, Rosita, Eugene, Tara, Maggie, and Glenn took off to WA on that bus. How Abe left the door open a few seconds longer before he closed it and took off. Seemed like he was giving Rick another opportunity to leave with them at that moment instead of later. Just by the look on Abe's face I could tell he didn't want to leave without Rick and the rest of his group but he felt Eugene's life was at the least risk on that bus headed to WA than at that church.

Loved the 'tainted meat' moment to open the episode. I like seeing Rick and Abraham butt heads. The scene where they slaughter the hunters was brutal although they deserved it. Michonne gets her sword back! RIP Bob Stookey. I liked seeing Tyreese step up for Sasha at the end. While I don't like seeing the group separated again the stories are generally better when they're not in a big group. Looking forward to finally seeing what happened to Beth next week.
