I just read the first arc of Carey's X-Men, and it was nice to see Banshee's death has not been forgotten. Rogue, specifically places blame on Mystique for slicing his throat and "paving his road towards death" or somesuch.

In my opinion, he was never better than when Lobdell was writing him in Generation X.
