The "World of Heroes" DC RPG Season III

Kyle watched the battle unfold.

The blood.

The carnage.

The betrayal.

The heartbreak.

He knew all of these things, knew them all too well. The brutality had been part of his life since the day he took the ring. It didn't bug him sp much any more. He rolled with the hits and iced his wounds at the end of the day. No biggie.

But betrayal? Heartache? He could never forget them, he could never push them from his mind.

Alex. Poor Alex, shoved unmercifuly in that refrigerator, her beautiful body bent and broken.

Jade. She left him without a second thought while he tried to put his life back together, tried to find meaning.

Even Earth. The people, the people he was supposed to protect. They had let him down...

...or, had he left them down. Had he gone off before giving them a second chance, before trying to fix what was broken. He had an oath to live by. Brightest day and blackest night. Take the good with the bad.

And things were bad. Sparky and X had stabbed them in the back. The fiesty little blond looked as if she were dead, and Wonder Woman wasn't in any better shape. Bats seemed to have his hand full as well.

Kyle could have stepped in at any of these places. But he found himself looking up.

Hal.

The greatest there was. For all of his shortcomings, for all of his failures and fears, Kyle knew he had lived up to the Green Lantern oath. He knew he was a hero, that he should be proud, He wasn;t some alley rat who stummbled ass-backwards into some cool rings. He wasn't some two bit hot shot looking for cheap thrills. He had come full cirlce. And he knew because Hal had told him so. Hal never looked down on him, never felt bitter. He stood by his side. He believed in Kyle. He never stood in front of him. He never played the headstrong leader. He had picked Kyle, out of thousands of Green Lanterns, to come back with him to Earth, to fight beside him and save a planet. He stood beside Kyle. Now it was Kyle's turn. No more self doubts, no more pity parties. He had come back to Earth, and he had gotten the answers he was looking for.

He was home.

The ring charged up, and Kyle floated into the air.

"Us against the apocalypse, Hal. I like our odds."

Deathstroke.

Wonderful.

Batman is going to have his hands full.

I chargs at Red X, knocking him to the ground. I then take the gun out of my pocket and put it to X's head.

"You seem like a reasonable man. I am not a reasonable man, so bear with me. I don't like people who sell out their planet. I am quite willing to blow what little you have in the way of brains right out of your head. So, it would be in your best interest to stay still. Sound reasonable?"

X garbbed the gun, then twisted it from Questions hand, then hit him around the face with the back of his other hand.

Mickey LaRonte had thought life was good. He was a successful Gotham businessman, one of the few to remain in business during this Unity crisis. He ran a restaurant for a criminal clientle - from thugs to gangsters to the occasional supervillain. He'd been a criminal himself in his younger days, until Lex Luthor had helped him set this place up to return a favour. So yes, life had been good for Mickey LaRonte. Until today.

Today, he was slumped against the wall of his restaurant, a bullet in his gut. A formidable pool of bloof had already gathered around him. And the man who'd shot him? He was still here, sitting at the piano, playing and singing a tune.

"Always, look on, the briiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight si-ide of life! Do-do, do-do-do-do-do-do! HA HA!"

The Joker played another couple of chords on the piano, then spun round on the stool to face LaRonte.

"You know, Mickey, the least I was expecting was an applause," he said, "It's a tough crowd tonight."
The Joker looked around at all the people slumped at the tables in the restaurant. They were all dead, morbid grins plastered on their faces. The Joker stood up, patting the dead pianist on the back.

"Play it again, Sam! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The Joker crouched down over the mortally wounded LaRonte. With Harley waiting back at the hideout, they were the only two people in the building still alive. Or were they?

"You are going to die, Mickey," The Joker explained, "That bullet through your gut? It'll kill you, without a doubt. But not for a long time. It could take hours, maybe even a couple of days, if you're unlucky. And you'll in agony, the whole time, the pain getting worse and worse until you finally shuffle your mortal coil. Not a pleasant way to go, my good man."

The Joker leaned in closer to LaRonte, whispering in his ear.

"Where is Lex Luthor? I know he stays here sometimes, when he's masterminding some underhanded activites in Gotham. I know there's a secret room in this building. Tell me where it is, Mickey, and I'll end your suffering, make the pain go away."

With a trembling hand, LaRonte pointed to the back wall, with a candle-holder jutting out. The Joker walked over to the wall, and turned the candle-holder, opening a hidden door. It led down a stairway, into some secret rooms down below. A meeting room and a bedroom. So this was what Luthor got from this restaurant. Luthor never gave anyone something for nothing.

Someone had been in here recently - the bedsheets were dishevelled. But nobody was here now. And the lack of any clothes or belongings suggested that whoever had been here wasn't coming back. The Joker had tracked Luthor out of Metropolis and back to Gotham City. And the trail had brought him here. Luthor's instinct for survival was clearly intact, if he'd got out of Unity-central to the comparitvely safe haven of Gotham. The Joker may have missed Luthor this time, but he was getting closer.

The Joker walked back up the stairs, the secret passage closing behind him as he re-entered the restaurant.

"Thanks for the help, Mickey," chuckled The Joker, walking past him.

"W-wait," LaRonte whimpered, with even speaking causing unbearable pain, "You said...you said you were going to kill me."

"Did I?" asked The Joker, batting his eyelids, "Oh yes, so I did. But you see, I was joking. Hence the name. But here's what I'll do..."

The Joker grabbed a notepad and pen from the counter, and brought it over to LaRonte.

"You've got plenty of time on your hands before you inevitably die. So, why don't you write a little poem about how cruel and unfair life is. Turn that pain into something creative. Or you could try slitting your own throat with the pen, see if you bleed out faster. Decisions, decisions! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

The Joker swaggered out of the restaurant. That was fun, but not very productive. Lex Luthor was still out there. And The Joker was going to find him.

Imra heard Parasite's comment.

Reaching her hand back she ripped Garths sleeve and pulled it back.
Energy crackling around her the fake metallic peeled off of it, revealing flesh.

*** Was it for this?*** she yelled in his head, her mind reeling.

"This isn't happening..It can't it's Garth...."

Imra could feel his compliance; however he didn't feel her fear.
The Unity had taken a hold on him.

She started digging her mind into his; physically she stood still her eyes glowing with pink lights danced around her and Garth. Her mind deep in his, the Unity battered at her mentally. Trying to get her as she fought to release Garth. His limp ‘body’ pinned to the wall, his arm shining with bright lights.

Grabbing whatever she could of him she tried to free the rest. She could feel her own self slipping.

She didn't have enough time. Making the decision she pulled with all her will.
Prying the essence and mind of Garth from the Unity's grasp.
Light encircled her encircled her, bright and vibrant it twisted it’s self around her.

What do you hope to gain? She heard the unmistakable ‘voice’ of the Unity.

His free will. Let him go.

Why? He’s betrayed you, what use could you possibly have for him?

It isn’t about ‘use.’

What is it about then?

Imra glared into the brightness. She could feel it pushing her for an answer.

I love him

The brightness recoiled slightly before she felt it tighten.

Indeed You do know what love get’s you don’t you? Pain at their hurt, fear for their life, hate for their chances. Betrayal. He didn’t tell you did he? There is no openess in him. How could you ever trust him?
Not really a life for a girl like you is it? One who thrives on trust.

There was silence, Imra stopped struggling.

Leave him….

Imra let lose, pink energy pierced the light driving it back.
NO! Those tricks might work on the others but not on me.

Humans aren’t infallable, they can’t be heroes all the time. I love him and I’m not leaving him for you!

Imra held onto Garth tighter.
She gasped as she felt herself slip away she struggled to hold onto everything.
The world around her went black with one small opening of light above her. Gathering Garth’s mind she flew towards it, herself in one hand and Garth in the other.
It was gaining, she’d just reached it. Their minds holding her back.
She strained, before opening her hand letting one fall inot the darkness. With what was left of herself she pushed Garth’s towards the light.

The only outward sign of the struggle she showed was a slight furrowing of her brow and a small tear on her cheek.
Suddenly her eyes cleared revealing wide blue eyes, before she gave a faint gasp and collapsed to the ground.

It was like something out of a dream for Garth, as he watched Imra and the Unity battle it out in the confines of his mind. He was nothing more than an observer...a confused observer. He could not help any side in this struggle, and, truth be told, Garth was somewhat glad for it. His mind was so jumbled, he wouldn't know who to help. The Unity, who had restored his arm and amped his powers, and who was also trying to bring true peace to the world...or Imra Ardeen, the woman he loved with all his heart and soul, and fellow Legionnaire.

Legionnaire.

It seemed so long ago. He, along with Imra and Rokk Krinn (Cosmic Boy), had been the founding members of the Legion of Superheroes years ago. They had been through so much together with the Legion, through the good times and the bad. To be a member of the Legion meant more than being part of a team. It meant being part of a family.

And Garth had betrayed that family.

He felt Imra take his hand and then they were off. Streaking towards a small window of white hot light, as the world around them turned into nothingness. They wouldn't make it, Garth realized. The Unity would not let her escape with him that easily. But, then she did something Garth did not expect. She let go of him, and gave him a push towards the light.
As Garth fell into the white light, he looked back, a look of dread on his face, as Imra was engulfed in the black.
"No!" he shouted futilely. He tried to somehow go back for her, but it was too late. She had entered his mind, and battled the Unity for him...and now, because of him, she was lost.

Snapping awake from the dream like state, he quickly looked towards Imra as she collapsed to the floor.
"Imra!"
Garth ran towards her fallen form, wrapping her in his arms and holding her tight. Tears flowed freely from his eyes as he held the unconscious form of his true love in his arms.
"Come on, babe, wake up! Snap out of it! You're stronger than this Imra! WAKE UP!"

Despite Garth's attempts to wake her, he got no reply.

The feelings of guilt crept up in Garth again. It was all his fault. Imra had tried to save him, and it cost her everything. And, in the struggle, he finally saw the Unity for what it was...a manipulative creature with a desire to do no more than control all things. The feelings of guilt began to make way for something else. Revenge. As Garth held Imra, his eyes, red from the tears, narrowed, and his jaw firmed. He was going to make the Unity pay for what it has done today. Someway...somehow, he would make it pay...

Well.

I should have seen that coming.

I lunge at Red X. While doing so, I take the grappling gun out of my other pocket and fire it at his chest. I felt body armor when I tackled him, so this shouldn't kill him.

Just hurt.

I land on the ground.

Hard.

Alright. This kid is good. Time to show him that you're no slouch either.

I get up, loosen my tie, and take of my hat. I run at him. As I get close, I take my jacket of in one swift motion anmd whip it his face. Then, while he's distracted, I punch him in the stomach.

The Parasite grinned watching the chaos unfold hundreds of feet underneath of him as he floated in the infinite. He looked back up and met Hal's eyes.

"Whatsamatter Jordan? You killed a bunch'a other GL's, but you're having trouble handling a simple janitor?"

Suddenly Rudy zoomed towards Hal and punched him in the stomach, then kneed him in the face.

"Come on, Shamus. Let's rock."

Kyle flinched at that. It hurt even him. That was a definite hit below the belt, but that's how slime operated

Suddenly Rudy zoomed towards Hal and punched him in the stomach, then kneed him in the face.

"Come on, Shamus. Let's rock."

"Hey raisin-face!" Kyle constructed an ax and shield, swinging for the Parasite. "You wanna rock? Then let the master teach you."

Corny, yes, but far be it from Kyle to be at a loss for words.

Rudy turned towards Kyle and smiled as the axe swung at him. Just as the weapon was about to strike the Parasite, he brought his hand upward and caught it by the very tip of the blade.

"Hey kid, here's a tip..."

Like ice, the axe began to crack and shatter in Rudy's hand. To add insult to injury, the shards of solid green energy left over from the axe began to disolve and soak into the Parasite's skin.

"...try not to use weapons made of energy against the energy abosorbing guy."

With that, the Parasite winked at Kyle and slugged him in the face with Amazonian strength.

I rush at Parasite. What else is there to do?

"Kid, the sun was the only thing that has ever killed me."

I tackle Parasite.

"And you're not even close to that power."

The power ring wasn't going to work. No shields, no weapons, no tricks.

No problem.

Kyle watched as Hal tackled the Parasite. Taking a running start, he barrled down into a baseball slide, the heel of his boot connecting with Parasite's temple.

After a lengthy discussion, I take Wally in my arms and fly us both out the window, over New York City and to the North Pole.

My house is in shambles. Costumed people were everywhere, either fighting, arguing or tending to thier, or others, wounds. I move quickly, too fast to be seen by most people, (I don't slow on Wally's account like I would for anyone else, if anyone could survive the supersonic speed I moved with, the Flash could) and place Wally in the Fortress's infirmary, hoping that it wasn't as damaged as the rest of the place seemed to be.

Then I joined the chaos, floating casually into the room, my arms crossed over my chest, I look to Deathstroke, the only obvious villain here (though the gaping hole in the ceiling indicated Parasite's presence), and give him a stern look.

"Just what exactly has been going on here?"

SuperFerret said:

"Sorry about the house party boy scout," he pulled out his sword holding it in one hand, blood still dripping from the alien creatures he had killed making his way through the tesseract. "I'll make sure to clean up before mommy and daddy get home."

As I carry Gardner with me, I notice the signal...lack of signal...change. It's on the move. The speedster is moving...through the air?

That's when I see him. Superman. He's carrying someone. And the way the interference is changing, I would say it is the speedster. I follow behind, making sure I'm close enough to keep Gardner's powers down. Wouldn't want an agent of Unity making trouble now that we found what we are looking for...if he is an agent...which I think he is...I think...

And when we arrive at this world's polar cap...well...apparantly we have missed a good deal of the fun...

The fighting continued on around Garth, but he was oblivious to it all. To him there was nothing else in the universe, save for he and Imra.
He had been misled by the Unity. He had thought it was a force for good, for peace. He was wrong. And his mistake had cost Imra her mind. He didn't know what happened to her, but he knew someone that could figure it out.

Gently scooping Imra up in his arms and holding her tight, Garth rose into the air. Pushing his flight right to it's limits, he made with all haste to Happy Harbor.

---------------------------

Minutes later, Garth touched down inside the Legion’s makeshift HQ while in the 21st century.
Brainiac 5 didn’t even notice his arrival as he was off in his own little world, studying information on his omnicom.

“Brainy!”

“Gah! Grife, what I wouldn’t give for a private...”, Brainy was about to chastise Garth for startling him and interrupting his work, but stopped when he saw Imra,“What happened to her?”

“It’s a long story, but she was attacked mentally. She’s...she gone, Brainy”, Garth said with a tear, “her mind is gone.”

“Well, this trip certainly keeps getting better. Place her on the table”, said Brainiac as he motioned to a nearby table.
“I’ll run some tests when I can, but---”

“When you can!?” said Garth with a sharpness in his tone.

“Garth”, said Brainy in a calm, reserved voice after seeing the hurt in his friend's eyes, “Arguing won’t solve anything here, and I still have to work on getting us home. Our best chance to save her might be to get her back to our own time as quickly as possible. If I had access to my lab and my equipment, I could easily figure out what’s wrong with her and come up with a quick remedy.”

Seeing Garth’s expression didn’t change any, Brainy continued before Live Wire could sound off any more, “BUT, I will make sure she is stable and that she receives the best possible care while we remain stuck in this primitive time period.”

Garth said nothing, he simply sighed deeply and looked down into Imra’s eyes. Those beautiful, blue eyes. Garth remembered the first time he saw her. When he traveled to Earth in search of his lost brother, Mekt, Garth, along with Imra and Rokk, had saved the life of the tycoon behind the Stargate technology, R.J. Brande, from an assassination attempt. After it was over, he finally got his first good look at the beautiful SP officer, and her alluring blue eyes. He had lost himself in those eyes that day.
They were so full of life, but now...now they were blank. Dead.

Garth leaned in and kissed her on the forehead, “I’m sorry, Imra. I’m so, so sorry.”

Garth prepared to depart, to go take the fight to the Unity, but stopped and turned to Brainy before leaving, “Take care of her, Brainy.”

“Don’t worry, Garth. She’s in the best hands on the planet. If there is any change in her condition, I will contact you immediately.”

Garth nodded his head to his friend and fellow Legionnaire, and took off. He was heading back to the fortress. First, he had to make things right with the other heroes. He would need their help in fighting this thing, and they would need his. Besides, he owned it to them and to himself--and especially Imra--to explain things immediately. It was his duty, and Garth was not one to shy away from anything, especially responsibility.

Feeling Jordan drive himself into his back and pushing them both for almost a hundred feet further into the void, Rudy looked over his shoulder and swung his massive arm at Hal, but surprisingly not dislodging him.

"Hey midget! Get off!"

While he was paying attention to Hal and had his head turned away from Kyle, the younger GL had decided to sneak up on him.

"Ugh!"

Rudy rolled his head to clear his vision and noticed that Kyle's kick had freed him from Jordan's grasp. Grinning at his luck, the Parasite looked at Rayner and aimed his now green-glowing hand at the kid.

"Hey Junior, I think you lost this."

The emerald axe that Rudy had absorbed from Kyle suddenly rematerialized in the Parasite's hand. Fully functional and intact.

"Here; lemme give it back to ya."

Rudy flew at Kyle and brought the axe down on his shoulder hard enough to shatter the weapon and knock the Green Lantern away from him, the blow sounding like a thunder crack.

OOC: I didn't want to have Rudy kill Kyle, so for your own benefit I ignored the "no shields" remark. With a shield, at least Parasite's draining it instead of the shield's wearer, which would be almost instantly fatal to an unsealed human just by being close to him.

"God dammit!" I yell, seeing the blow to Kyle. I ring up a huge flashlight. And then I flash it in Parasite's eyes. We'll see what happens, and if my plan works...

My blood boils as I recognize the fluid dripping from his blade, and now that species is truly extinct and unrecoverable, but I restrain myself. Bruce is nearby and obviously ready to take Deathstroke himself.

"Where are your partners, Slade? Tell me where the Parasite is, and I'll leave you to Batman alone. Otherwise, I'll have to show you how my Pa showed me to take care of burglars unlucky enough to enter my home."

To add to my menacing words, I flash my eyes red, but do not release any heat, yet.

"What the fu--? GAAHH!"

The Parasite had to shield his eyes as he was blinded.

"Forget the pain. Don't worry about the blood. It'll heal. Just keep him off balance. Wear him down."

Kyle watched as Hal blinded the Parasite. Waiting for the right moment, Kyle lunged forward and hit Rudy across the knees with the best chop block he could muster.

Everything happens quickly.

Superman confronts Deathstroke in his own...super...way.

The X and Question start fighting. Damn traitors.

Jordan and Rayner take on the Parasite and their battle leads them into an empty zone.

I can't just float here. I must do something. I look down at Gardner. Do I risk releasing a possible agent of Unity? Even if the speedster should be keeping his power at bay?

I hear a yell come from Rayner's location. I have no choice.

I set Gardner down and take off for the sounds of battle...

Slade thinks for a second, "Damn that red-eye crap is intimidating."
Deathstroke doesn't fear death, but burning flesh sure hurts like hell.

"The Lanterns blasted him into your ceiling last I saw of him," then he turns back to Batman, "You hear that Wayne? He's going to leave you and me alone," he pulled the machine gun off his back loading a magazine of armor piercing bullets, "too bad your kevlar's no good with these little guys," he cocked back the weapon,"So dance punk!" Deathstroke started spraying the ground under Batman's feet with bullets.
