The "World of Heroes" DC RPG Season VIII

I can't breathe, all oxygen cut off by the noose around my neck. Black Hand pulls me in closer and closer, until his rancid breath is pounding down on my face.

"You first."

*PCHUUUUK!*

The rope construct falters and fades away, and I'm left face-to-face with Black Hand. What hits me is how confused he looks, how - after all his talk about the glory of death - he can't believe this is actually happening to him. The green stake construct sticks out through his back, blood dripping from the end. I put it straight through his heart.

"I'm sorry."

Black Hand lets go. He feels anti-life leave his body. He looks at Jordan, his eyes have changed from red to black, the black aura around him has disappeared. He falls to the ground in a heap.

Something grabs his hand.

"William? It's time."
*****
"alas, poor yorick," the chalk white hands grasped the Robotman's detached head, "i knew him well." The man giggles. There is a intense light and a flash. A bubble appears before the jester of Oolong Island. The latch opens and out steps Brainiac 5 and the Atom.

"It all leads to this, Professor Palmer. I was sent here to put an end to the Black Lantern. I have been chased through time by Darkseid's Time Priests. I'm the only one who knows. It was too dangerous to ever record my findings."

"My God," the Atom finally recognizes the clown, "My god...the Joker, he's killed the Doom Patrol...." the Atom leaps at him and makes contact. The "Joker" falls to the ground, laughing.

"i'm sorry do I know you? no, i think you have me mistaken for someone else. i'm just a tourist. i left home, i think i might have killed home."

"Shut up, you monster."

"please, flattery will get you no where. now little pixie, I'm not this joker and i did not murder this Doom Patrol, although i do admire the work hahahaha. besides, there is only one body. the rest of team is not on this plane of existence anymore haha. here reality bends around the lantern. things come from other worlds. reality is weak." The truth was there was no bodies besides the head of Cliff Steele. the Atom noticed that the Joker did not look like their Joker.

"Who are you?"

"hehehe, I'm the cosmic trickster, little pixie. I'm always looking for ways to mess with barbatos's mojo. ha! Perhaps, ragnarok next! i don't come from here. my earth is somewhere out there. i came here to visit."

"Palmer, we don't have time!"

"Why are you here."

"oh for a wedding! the alchemy marriage. something blue, something green, something, yellow, something violet, something...something hahahahha"

"I believe I see your friends. Aquaman! Green lantern! Um Pink Lantern? I see that Black Hand is dead? Yes, that's good and all but that won't stop the Black Lantern from detonating the other Lanterns. We must..." The Black Lanterns had descended knocking Brainiac out of commission.

"remember, palmer, the fool always speaks the truth." The clown faded leaving only a smile which shortly disappeared. The Atom reached a realization.

" Hal! Guy! Get them all! I know how to stop it. Get the other corps here!

The mutated Holly Robinson hovers in the air, piercing her claws against Harley's cheeks. Letting out a shriek, she blasts away Katherine Kane, encasing her in a solid, pink, crystal case.

Selina Kyle checked the pulse of her young companion, Stephanie Brown. Letting out a wild growl, Selina blasted the street around her, enraged at the comatose state Stephanie had been shot in to. Releasing her two fingers of the young girl's neck, she turned to look up at the sky, her teammates failing to fight the new Star Sapphire Corp recruit. "Soon she will become engulfed in the Star Sapphire Force...then we will see who has the least breath,"

"Come on Holly...if you're in there, it's me, Harley, STAR SAPPHIRE"

That was weird...very weird. The female thought to herself for a few seconds, before an unexpected blow to the stomach caused her to hurl towards Arisia, the battling Green Lantern Corps Member. The two hovering females collided, soaring back down to the dumpsters below. Innocent victims ran, screaming of fear and terror. "What the hell happened up there!?"

As the Female Furies gathered together and lowered themselves to the level of the fallen Lanterns, they each had smirks creeping up upon their faces. Katherine Kane, however, had passed out in the destructing crystal. "That happened,"

"Who are these chicks?" With no time for Harley to reply, Lana Lang struck Arisia across the face, generating heavy electricity from the tips of her solid, metal, fingers. Watching as her new companion was thrown in to the darker ends of the streets, and pursued by the crazed Lana Lang, Harley jetted off in to the skies, blasting towards a Black Lantern.

Come On, Harley! Time to set Plan C in to action! You can do this, you're a STAR SAPPHIRE.Wait, what? Even in my thoughts now? Her quick paced thoughts helped Harley carefully swipe the Black Lantern across the chest, leaving a trail of energy blasts behind her.

The blasts stunned the male Black Lantern for a few seconds, giving her a chance to consume it in an all-powerful crystal case. Once trapped, Harley ceased the opportunity, waiting for Holly Robinson and Selina Kyle to come closer. Wait for it...Wait...Wait....

NOW!

Balling her hand into a fist, Harley exploded the powerful force field, unleashing the Black Lantern. Using her newfound telekinetic powers, she swung the raging Black Lantern in to the incoming females. It's full blasts hit their bodies instantly, causing Holly to shriek in pain and horror. Her unconcious body dropped to the ground, causing a ripple effect in the street. "Just you and me now, Star Sapphire!"

If my (albeit brief) stint as "Kid Lantern" taught me anything it's how to use a Power Ring.

"You asked for it!"
I said as I held forth my ring, trying to form a construct of a fist...

...and short of a little blue spark, nothing happened.

Oh right. This one doesn't run on willpower...

Jay begins to laugh at my lack of control over the ring, but then I use that to my advantage. As I hoped for my ring to work, the fist construct began to finally appear, and I sped at Jay fast enough to send Jay flying, the blue fist construct breaking upon the impact.

"Hahaha. A ring's no help if you can't get it wo-oh crap."

Everything becomes a blue blur as I feel myself smashed through more than a few walls. Finally I find myself laying amongst some fallen bricks.

"I'm going to say...ouch."

I see the telltale signs of a blue streak rushing towards me. "Fine, you wanna get rough? Let's get rough."

The wall of bricks becomes my own personal arsenal as I launch them at Wally.

Black Lanterns turn to dust around us as I command my corps to work with the others. The red lanterns are still a chaotic variable, but their gruesome commander seems to have at least some control over them.

And yet, even with the mass slaughter we're able to issue now that we're finally working together, it seems to make little difference in the grand scheme of things. The sky is still black, only illuminated by brief flashes of color. Some of which, still fade as their owners are lost.

"Nothing like trying to ice skate uphill, is there?" Wildcat asks.

"I think I know what you mean."
Wildcat, the blue lantern known as Saint Walker, and the leader of the red lanterns, have become an effective fighting force. I've lost count of the number of black lanterns we've wiped from existence, of course I made sure to have my ring keep track of the number.

"We must continue to press on. We will win out in the end as long as we do not give up."

"Would you just shut up!" Atrocitus yells as he rips a black lantern in two.

"Don't pay any attention to Mr. Grumpy, Saint. No one's talking about giving up."

Wildcat traps a lantern in a bubble, and I drive a massive spike through it. "Save your energy for the dark lanterns, Atrocitus. They'll be plenty of time to deal with each other after we save the universe."

"Don't think that time won't come, Sinestro." The sheer vile in the way he says my name makes me wonder if we can get by with only three colors...

"Come on, guys and dolls! Let's fight the good fight!"

Forming the construct of a lasso, The Joker scooped up a couple of innocent bystanders by the legs, and started using them to bludgeon the Black Lanterns to pulp.

"Had to be done," I tell Hal as I help Aquaman up to his feet. I look over Hand's dead body and kick it for good measure. "Come on, Hal. We took out the head, but the body is still out there kicking our ass. We need to take it to the other Black Lanterns out there."

"Forget about the Black Lanterns... we need to take out the source of their power."

I point at the massive Black Lantern Power Battery that stands before us.

"I don't know if our combined power will be enough, though. We might need more colors..."

The boy's slight frame came through the storefront window in a rain of glass and blood, his weight slamming against shelves of cheap electronics before bouncing off the immovable cabinet and landing on the filthy tile of the inner city pawn store. The stereos and small television on the shelves rattled, falling down around and on top of the child in further torment and humiliation. Pushing himself off the ground Damian coughed as he choked on his own blood, which ran freely from down his face and a nose that was almost definitely broken.

In the window loomed the large frame of the zombie Azrael.

First Jason Todd, now Jean Paul Valley. Both returned from the grave. Was this a Batman Family Reunion or what? It certainly was appropriately far enough in the '****ed up' category as to qualify. No one associated with Bruce Wayne did anything normal.

Propelling himself forward, Damian barely dodged the massive black scythe the grazed across the tile and slammed into the shelf - cutting the metal framing neatly in two. Springing up from a handstand, the boy landed on his feet and flipped to the side as one half of the cabinet came sailing through the air to strike the wall right behind him. The frame just clipped him, but the grazing blow was enough to lift the child up and send him sailing further into the store. Striking the tile a second time, Damian skidded along the floor until a magazine stand and his own head were gracious enough to stop the momentum.

It was entirely possible that the son of the Bat had just wet his pants, except that there were a number of significantly larger problems looming for Damian to stop and think about how frightened he was at the moment. He couldn't kill this thing. He couldn't fight Jean Paul Valley on even terms without a power ring, let alone with one. And at the rate that things were going, Damian couldn't take too much more of this. Time to go back to basics. Stealth. Evasion. Manipulate the environment.

The boy could hear the zombie large frame moving through the store, size and confidence causing the man's steps to betray his movements. Silently, Damian slid through the aisles. That black ring seemed to give the zombies an intuitive ability to find people, so the boy doubted he'd be able to rely on his ninja training for very long.

He was in a pawn store. An old brick storefront in downtown Gotham. What could he use here to fight something like an undead monstrosity? The building was dated. The electrical wiring would probably be grandfathered under occupational and building safety code standards developed decades after its construction. Heat. Probably natural gas.

Gliding through the shadows, the boy was mindful to the fact that Azrael seemed drawn to where he was. The man storming through the store in a beeline for the boy's location. Damian kept a large number of obstacles between them, causing Valley to either detour around, over, or waste time by punching through them. It was only slowing the zombie down, but it was buying time for Damian to think on his feet while trying to line the zombie up where he wanted him.

Sliding into a storage room in the back of the pawn store, Damian put his back to a electrical panel. Azrael would pass by the opposite side of the wall, making his most likely move to punch through it. If he didn't, and went around to the door, then this was going to be a short-lived career in the family business because there wasn't going to be anywhere for Damian to go at this point.

So he waited. Wall. Or door. Which option was Valley going to take?

I point at the massive Black Lantern Power Battery that stands before us.

"I don't know if our combined power will be enough, though. We might need more colors..."

"Your wish is my command...."

I spark up my ring and broadcast a signal to all Lanterns of every color.

"Guy Gardner of the Star Sapphire Corps coming to you. We may have our differences, looks, beliefs, what have you, but we're all united in our fight against these Black Lanterns. They're life-sucking slaves to Darkseid, and they need to be stopped now. It's time to put all the petty bull**** aside and come together as one, all colors united together to bring the fight to these bastards. I'm transmitting coordinates to the location of the Black Lantern battery. Get your ass down here on the double, we got a universe to save."

Gods help us. Gardner is calling the shots now? No wonder the universe is in the state it is.

I speak into my ring. "All available Sinestro Corps members in the area report to me." But I hear no response. No Corpsmen are free. I can't say I'm surprised.

If we abandon the fight to join with Gardner, we risk putting the population of the Earth in immediate danger. If we don't...the outcome could be the same.

"...Hells."

I dive down through the sky, masses of light and dark exploding before me as I swerve around the battle. A battle we're slowly losing.

"Wildcat!" I shout.

"I can hear ya! I'm fighting for my life, not deaf." he says as he, Walker, and Atrocitus team up to eliminate another wave of enemies.

"I'm leaving you in temporary control of my Corps until if and when I need them."

"...you're doing what now?"

"Walker, Atrocitus. You're with me."

"I am?"

"Go die in a fi-"

"You're giving me what now?!"

"Didn't any of you hear Gardner's call?"

"Yeah, but we're kinda busy."

"Which is why I'm leaving my Corps with you."

"Wait, but-"

"I can't trust any Sinestro Corps members to fight with the rest of you. I need someone to keep them in line."

"And that's me?! What about the red lanterns?"

"Killing black lanterns is quenching their bloodlust, for the moment. They can spare me. If I decide to go. Which I haven't."

"You're stubborn fool. Fine, I'll claim the glory for myself."

"Wait? What?"

I ignore Atrocitus, turning back to Wildcat. Concentrating, I create a new yellow ring. "Here."

"Hey, wait now. I don't know about this."

"What glory?! The glory of slaughtering these black lanterns shall be mine!"

"Blast it, take the damned ring." I force it on his hand.

Ted Grant.
You have the ability to instill great fear.
Welcome to the Sinestro Corps.

Warning.
The presence of fear detected.
Initiating countermeasures.

"AAAAERRRHHGGGHH!!!" Grant screams, his uniform shifting between green-yellow-green-yellow-and back again.

"Um..." Atrocitus says, clearly at a loss of words for probably the first time. "What's going on?"

I look at Grant curiously as his will and fear fight for control. "He'll figure it out. Let's go." I launch into the distance. Atrocitus and Saint Walker look at each other, then at Ted.

"Go. I'll be-ung-fine."

Atrocitus shrugs. "I was going anyway. I was just curious to see if you were going to explode." Atrocitus launches towards the west.

"Let me help, Ted."

"No thanks kid. Don't know what the blue stuff will do to me right now. Just help the others. I have a feeling they're gonna need it..."

A Black Lantern.

...A really big Black Lantern.

Things make a little more sense now.

I land behind the two men as they stare at the large object filling the area with a deep sense of emptiness.

"Can't you humans ever stay out of trouble?"

The light is painful. He hears Desaad scream, his parademons back away from the light, and the black light will not effect it. Darkseid, though, remains. His stoic face refuses to express hate, anger...fear.

"Impossible." He turns his attention toward the heavenly figure descending.

"No, impossible. No one has ever escape the life trap." He is outside Darkseid's sphere of influence. He can bend reality to his pleasing. He has ruin the universe with his malice but they will not give in. The sky lights up in a hellish red, the enemy has been found and the sun rejoices.

"Very well, Superman. If I must I will ruin you by my own hands. Face the power of a true god!"

"Not going to happen, Darkseid," I say, as I look up at the sky. "A red sun would have worked just a few minutes ago, when the solar energy in my cells was the source of my powers."

Darkseid lashes out with a fist, which I catch in the palm of my hand. He is immensely powerful...but so am I. The ground quakes with the impact, the energy in each shift of our muscles sending further tremors in all directions.

"I'm connected directly to the Source Wall now. The power of Creation itself is what's giving me my strength. You may try to bend the universe to your will, but the universe is fighting back....through me."

I return a fist in kind, catching the dictator in the jaw with a shattering blow.

"All of reality denies you, Darkseid, but you refuse to listen. Consider this your wake-up call."

As Darkseid recovers, I let loose with a blast of Heat-Vision hotter than the heart of a supernova.

"You've got the hordes of Apokolips on your side, and a Corps of Black Lanterns along with them. Right now the universe is lit up with the lights of Willpower, of Fear, of Hope and Rage and Love and Greed and Compassion, and all the things that make life. They'll fight your forces on every front and win. But as far as I'm concerned, right here, right now?"

A collection of golden points of light appear in the sky, figures igniting the air as they enter the Earth's atmosphere.

"It's just you, against just me...."

The figures draw closer, sweeping Parademons aside like leaves.

"Can't you humans ever stay out of trouble?"

No, it can't be him...

But of course it is. Of course he wouldn't be dead. He never is. He has to keep coming back...

"Sinestro."

Then it clicks, it all falls into place. The uniform Sinestro is wearing, the timing of this group emerging, the rings they're wearing.

"The Parallax Corps. You're the leader."

Sinestro gives a curt nod. And now I know. Now I know who sent Kryb to my home. Now I know who is truly responsible for my son's death.

I feel like I'm going to throw up. I want to kill him, right now, in front of all these representatives of the assembled corps. Kill him for all he's done. But I can't. No matter how much I want to, there's too much at stake. The fate of the very universe depends on us working together... for now. But once this Black Lantern is destroyed. Then...

"This is their Central Power Battery," I choke out, barel containing my trembling hand as I point towards it, "We all need to focus our light into it."

I fire a concentrated beam of emerald light into the heart of the Central Power Battery, waiting for the others to join in.

The wall of bricks becomes my own personal arsenal as I launch them at Wally.

At lightspeed I hoped and formed a bright blue bubble around me to deflect the superspeeding bricks, but the impact was causing my construct to falter.

Power levels at 48%... 36%... 21%

"Damn it..."

But just then, a blast of green knocked Jay off his feet.

"Need a hand there, Wally?"

Kyle Rayner. Late to the party as always...

"What took you?"

"Went a couple rounds with Joker. Sucker's got a yellow ring now. And I see Black Canary's not the only one sporting blue this fashion season."

"What can I say? Blue is the new red..." I joked.

Then Kyle's ring started glowing and charging up at a speed that would even make a Flash's head spin, and he didn't even say his oath.

Power levels at 125%... 150%... 200%

"What's going on with this thing?"

"I think my blue ring is charging yours."

"Sweet. Saves time with the whole oath thing..."

"Speaking of... Mind keeping him busy? Gotta recharge." I say holding up my almost depleted ring.

"You got it."

Kyle then flew over to Jay as he was getting back up, and formed an energy armor around his body for protection.

"I don't wanna hurt you, Mr. Garrick. But as your friend Alan could probably tell you, I'm not above hitting the elderly..."

Feeling the grip of Selina Kyle tighten around her neck, Harley's attention is pulled towards the calling of Guy Gardener, and the rest of the lanterns swarming off to face the Centeral Power Battery. "I don't have time for this!" Harley growls, weilding a sharp weapon from her ring and stabbing it straight through Selina's stomach.

She finally regains the focus she needs, hovering up in to the air, pulling the wounded Selina with her. "No more holding back!"

Her fist swiftly swings across Selina's face, creating a sharp 'cracking' sound within her nose. Selina gurgles in pain, before Harley projects a forceful ring around the slave of Darkseid's neck. The ring glows like a halo, yet causes the opposite effects. She leaves the female to drop to the floor and blasts up in to the skies.

"Well done, you have weilded the ring well..."
Arisia is the first to greet Harley in the darkened skies, before they exchange sharp looks at eachother and nood in agreement. Their arms align forward together and their rings glow harmoniously.

Powerful blasts project themselves from the rings of the females, hitting the core of the Power Battery.

I fire a ray of violet light at the battery. My beam is soon joined by beams from other corps. All around us members flock and fire their rings at the battery. All the different colors merge and begin forming a white beam of energy.

"We got ourselves a regular Rainbow Rodeo on our hands."

Its a funny thing, waiting. Any second now either an undead space zombie is going to put its hand through a wall to try and kill me, or come crashing through a door to try and kill me. Oddly enough, I'm totally okay with the former. If he decides to go with Door Number 2, I'm more than a little screwed with my back to a wall. So yeah, waiting for the grim reaper's drugged out psycho cousin to come punching through the wall to kill me... all good.

At the same time, waiting allows me to put some things into perspective. For starters, I miss my father. Not that I'll admit to that, but there it is. And that I would want the chance to tell Tim Drake how much of a ***** he is just one more time before I die. And maybe my mother as well. And my grandfather. And Alfred. And - okay, so maybe there are a whole lot of whiny *****es in my life.

Stephanie Brown? Nah. Maybe one more fat joke though.

That's it. I've decided that if I live through this, I will devote everyday to making sure that the people who are either *****es or fat - or fat *****es - are made aware of this fact. Daily. Really, its a calling in life that I'm able to see these things in people and help them improve by impressing upon them their utter worthlessness. Not that they'll ever get better, but they should at least be cognaizant of the fact that they're worthless.

The good lord above (or the dark one below) must have heard me, because its at that moment that the armored fist of the undead Jean Paul Valley smashed through the wall. The blades on the knuckles sheer through the power box and cables, sending at least 240 volts into him. With that superzombie resistance they've demonstrated its nothing that he can't shake off. And indeed, Valley is pulling apart the tangle of wires as he steps through the barrier between us. The exposed wires spark and arc as they rub against each other and the metal of his suit.

Which is where the second part of my plan comes in. There's a gas-fed water heater and a furnace in the corner. I blew out the pilot light out on the furnace when I came in. Leaping away from the wall, I bring my heel down on the feed line. Yeah, the pipe could spark and make this a really bad day but it's already been that and I have a space superzombie in the closet with me. In for a penny, in for a pound right?

There's a loud hiss of gas as the line snaps from the joint, feeding the gas straight into the room. At this point, I'm doing my best Flash impersonation. Dashing out of the closet, I slam into a cabinet as my feet skid on the floor tile before I get enough traction to make for the exit. I'm already seeing the play by play in my head.

The sparks from the wires ignite the gas. The flames shoot up into the resevoir within the furnace that's been building up and...

B O O M!

It sounds like a single explosion, but it's actually a daisy chain as the furnace blows, and the pressure compresses the gas inside the water heater, which then also blows, which then creates enough of a pressure difference that the flames shoot into the gas line and blow out the pipes. The entire back of the store is blown out, the force picking me up and pitching me out of the pawn shop in a fireball. Did I mention how glad I was that the cape was made of nomex?

I land in a jiu-jitsu roll that spreads the force of the impact and protects my spine. I swear its the first time tonight I've actually managed to fall correctly and not get laid out on my ass. Probably pretty dramatic stuff. Shot out of store front in a ball of flame, manage to flip up from the roll into a three-point crouch, and there's smoke rising off my suit.

Who am I? I'm the son of the goddamn Batman, that's who I am.

Standing, I look back to the store which is now completely engulfed. Do I think that undead, Power Ranger, ring zombie, whatever Jean Paul Valley is totally gone? No. But I bet it takes him a hell of a lot longer than five seconds to pull his body back together after that one.

Guy adds his violet light. The Blue Lantern adds his blue light. Atrocitus adds his red light. Larfleeze adds his orange light. Sinestro adds his yellow light. And it all combines with my green light. We're missing one of the colors of the rainbow, but it seems like this will be enough. The Black Lantern Central Power Battery starts to tremble, and all around us the Black Lanterns writhe and shriek in pain as if something is being ripped from inside of them.

"It's working! Keep at it!"

Arkham Asylum,

The world has gone to hell. Arkham seems like the safest place in the world for once. The monsters, aliens, and gods seem to ignore this place. Dr. Jeremiah Arkham walked through the corridors trying to keep back his smile. Reality is dying on the outside and time has fallen apart. Arkham Asylum was the sanest place in the universe.

"And how are you today, Mr. Owens?" Mr. Carl Owens was one of the rare cases where the patient didn't get into a colorful costume and decide to use Gotham as their playground. In fact Arkham was not really sure why he was here. He did show up months ago but those months were foggiest at best. Owens was an invalid. Confine to a wheelchair and completely unaware where he was and who he was.

"Beware, the emptiness shape like a god."

"What?"

The Asylum had disappeared. Dr. Arkham was now in a world of fire, ash, sulfur, and soot. He stood in the graveyard of Apokolips. Mr. Owens had disappear. Before him was a figure that looked like a man sitting in a chair that was also one of the greatest machines in the cosmos. One that doubled as a god. A heavenly light burned off of him.

"..."

"Fear not mortal. This is knowledge."
Metron touched his forehead. Images flash before his eyes.

"You were possess by a parasitic pain organism. A insect that remade himself into a god." Desaad that was his name. The dead god that crawled in his mind. In Metron hand was a fly, "part of his concept lingered behind when he left you." He crushed it.

"The dark gods destroyed our bodies but they were not able to destroy the concept. They were not able to destroy what we were. That was Anti-Life's goal. Although, it has failed. Forces in this universe have resisted Anti-Life. With that spark it has keep the New Gods alive. Using the mortal Black Hand and the power of the Black Lantern they were able to lock down our...you would call them souls or spirits to your asylum, a place of oppression. You will not remember this meeting, Dr. Arkham but you two will."

"Who are you talking to?" Dr Arkham who believed he finally lost it for the 800th time. Metron motioned toward the Atom and Brainiac. Half the space their were in was Oolong Island being besieged by Lantern light, the other was the asylum.

"I am afraid it will be the only way to keep your mind, doctor. But Ray Palmer and Brainiac spread the word. The gods return. Before I take leave, Jeremiah, you must release Prisoner number 54729." In a flash everything was back to normal. Mr. Owens was no more. Soon, Arkham didn't even remember Carl Owens. He went to a prison door and open it. A giant man burst from the door. A feeling of determination, rage, something unstoppable was coming for his father.

"...all of me."

"Even with the power of infinite universe, Superman, you are no less naive. Nothing you will ever do will change the constant of the new universe. All is Darkseid." A robot Superman and a green skinned one try to restrain Darkseid but throws them off which sends them rocketing through buildings.

"Fear, love, avarice, rage are all Darkseid. Hope and compassion ceases to be when I send them into falling into the hells of my creation. Nothing can measure against my willpower. You are the Superman but you are still nothing more than man! Now mortal, die!" Darkseid grabs on to Superman before he can pull him off he hurls him through a building. Darkseid uses his eye beams to cut through and let it fall toward the fallen Superman.

Freeze guns, chattering death, cream pie bombs, mind control hats...where was it. The man in red tore apart the evidence room. A museum dedicated to the hobbies of the deadly and mad.

Father...Your reign of oppersion ends now. You believe us to be dead. You believe that you are unstoppable, you are wrong. They fight on. They fight odds that are impossible but they refuse to falter. I refuse to stop until you are defeated. He picks up his helmet.

"Know this father! Orion rides again!"

I pour everything I have into our combined energies. I spare a glance at Jordan. "Feels good to be working together again." I get nothing in response. Not surprisingly.

The Lantern trembles under our might. Trembles, but does nothing more. "Why is this not working?!"

"Nok Tor lorek nok?"

We all look at the new voice. We can't help it. What language can the rings not translate? What slinger uses a staff? And what Corps wears...indigo?

"I want that staff!"

We all roll our eyes.

"Well, are you going to help us or not?"

The woman casually looks us all over, as if the fate of the universe wasn't actually at stake. Then she examines the Black Lantern. Looking up, and up, and up. Until she's staring at the writhing mass of dark and bright bodies in the sky.

"Ter lantern ker lo Abin Sur."

My eyes go wide. "What?"

She turns to face the Black Lantern.

"What was that about Abin Sur!"

But she ignores me, and adds her indigo power to our own.

I concentrate at the task at hand again. "Don't think this isn't over."

The city was in a panic, but the situation was much under control now than what it was earlier. The bulk of the zombies and demon-thingies appeared to have been drawn away. The different lights that had earlier buzzed across the sky now seem concentrated on a pulsing bright light out on the horizon. The boy assumed that his father was out there, on that horizon, because he sure as hell wasn't in Gotham. Which was a damn shame, because Gotham sure as hell could use a Batman right now.

None of the usual suspects seemed to be out. No Drake. No Bimbo 'Thunderpants' Brown. Hell, if Barbara ****ing Gordon was shaking her ass with her nightly girlfriends it sure wasn't making a difference.

Its a damn shame, because if only some other hero were here then perhaps the death toll wouldn't be so high. Damian knew his father's 'golden rule'. He knew the ethos behind the Batman. He knew why his father was the man that he was. But Damian wasn't Bruce Wayne. Through blackest night, Damian looked within himself and found that he's lost any sympathy for the criminals that he stalked. He'd lost the will to seek redemption for himself or even to express remorse for anything other than the two year old he'd seen gunned down by gang violence. The small timers and wannabes were tied up for Gotham's finest - when the GCPD had the time to come pick them up. The rest went into that good night as a trail of blood which stretched from downtown to the Suicide Slums.

The window shattered from seven stories above the pavement. The large thug's scream piercing the night air as the shadow framed in the windowsill stoically watched the meatbag splatter on the sidewalk below. "Man was an alto. Who'd have guessed?" the boy muttered, as he casually tossed up a cellphone and caught it behind his back before flipping the mobile open. A gift from the deceased, one that Damian had picked from off his belt before he'd taken the plunge. Hesitating for a moment, the son of the Bat dialed out a number and put the phone against the side of his head as he leaned up against a blood splattered wall.

Inside the room were three other bodies, several automatic weapons which the self-proclaimed drug lords had never even had time to touch, and a half pound of cocaine sitting out on the coffee table.

A familiar voice answered. "Wayne residence."

"Is father home?"

"Master Damian, are you all right?"

The boy rolled his eyes at the butler's tone. "Like anyone gives a ****."

"Master Damian..."

"Is my father there or not?"

"Master Bruce is out presently."

"Tt," Damian chirped, though it was more or less the answer he'd expected. "I'd sure like to know where," the boy remarked candidly. Probably the first honest thing he'd said to Alfred.

"Are you coming home, Master Damian?"

"You can tell my father to come pick me up," Damian answered. That would tie things up nicely. The boy trusted that Alfred would deliver the message. If or when his father showed up, and assuming that father even wanted him around, then the Batman could come and find Damian. For his part, Damian was too ****ing tired to keep trying to chase after the shadow of the Bat.

"You are all right, then?"

"Yeah, whatever," Damian quipped coldly, terminating the conversation when he snapped the cellphone shut and tossed it out the window so that it could go join its former owner.

Alone in a room full of bodies, part of him felt disappointed. After Jason Todd and Jean Paul Valley - an undead Jean Paul Valley with a power ring - fighting crime just didn't have any of the same challenge. It was boring. He needed something fun to do. Like punching in Tim Drake's face.

Damn. He was missing the Drake now? God, how desperate could he get?

Nightwing punched the tallest parademon in the face hard, jumping on his body and forcing him to the ground. He punched him twice more in the face, then jumped up, aiming a kick at the soldier running up behind him. His weapons had been broken or forced out of his hands, and he was getting tired. His gloves had been torn fromt he force of the punches, and he was fairly sure that he had broken most of his fingers. He spat blood onto the ground, grabbed the helmet of another parademon off of its head, headbutting it viciously.

"I think we could really do with this fight being over soon," Dick growled.

I pick myself up off the ground. "Two things, kid. One: I'm not old. Two:..." I point my hands at the green punk and blast with with enough voltage to make Superman's hair stand up.

"The lightening bolt's not just for decoration anymore."

I dash under Rayner and slam into Wally before he can do whatever he was gonna do.

"This ring's a real pain in the ass. Let's say we get rid of it."
I grab Wally's hand tightly in mine until I hear bones snap.

"Let go before I rip all your fingers off! ...wait...I'm actually good with that."

With every light working in unison, something strange happens. The beams all unite into one single beam, turning white. The light is blinding, I actually have to shield my eyes. The Black Lantern Central Power Battery starts to crack and crumble under this onslaught, until finally it collapses.

With it gone, it feels like the parting of clouds, like a weight has been lifted off the air. All around us, Black Lanterns start reverting into their original form, the power of Anti-Life draining away from the universe.

"We did it. Life prevails again."

"Even with everything falling apart around you, you still won't listen," I say, throwing off thousands of tons of rubble as I emerge from the ruined building. That wouldn't have been much of a problem for me even before I became what I am now. "You've lost on every front."

I focus my cosmically-enhanced telescopic senses, now able to project my vision across enormous gulfs of space, and watch the destruction of the Black Lantern Battery in real-time.

"My friends have just broken the source of the Black Lanterns' power, and erasing the damage that Anti-Life has done all across the universe. Just like always, you've underestimated the strength that we 'mere mortals' have. We not only defied you, we've not only fought you.....now we've beaten you."

The swarm of Supermen begins to gather around Darkseid, closing in on the mad god.

"You may hold yourself up by your anger and your lust for power, but there are things far more powerful than even Anti-Life itself. Things that you've simply ignored."

Darkseid unleashes a blast of his Omega Beams, which I let hit me again. With the power of the Source itself running through me, the Omega Effect is canceled out.

"Truth. You've lived too long in self-delusion, hearing and seeing only what you want instead of learning the way things really are. Truth can be covered, it can be shrugged off or twisted into lies, but in the end, the truth is an absolute, and it cannot be changed."

The other Supermen begin to whirl around him, creating a powerful vortex to pin him in place.

"Justice. It's the cornerstone of civilization itself, that raises us beyond the simple savagery of the strong preying on the weak. Upholding right and punishing wrong. And eventually, it catches up with everyone. It can be delayed or diverted, but it can't be avoided."

Within the swirling hurricane winds generated by the swarm of Supermen, ribbons of red light blast into Darkseid; the burning gaze of them letting loose with their Heat Vision.

"And the American Way. Two hundred years ago on this tiny little planet, a band of uncertain and under-equipped rebels openly defied the will of an empire. They were willing to fight and die for the belief that every man is in charge of his own destiny, and can accomplish incredible things when set free. It was a belief that changed the very course of history on this world. It can be mocked, it can be subverted and passed around and distorted in the hands of bureaucracy, but it can never be defeated."

I pass into the spinning maelstrom of alternate versions of myself, and stare Darkseid in the eye.

"I've had everything I needed to stand against you from the very beginning. The only difference now is that I can finally rid the universe of you for good."

The Supermen pick up speed, the world filling with a deafening roar of a thousand sonic booms as they rip through the air, gaining speed to rival even the Flashes.

"I'm not going to kill you, Darkseid. Destruction and revenge are your ways, not mine. Instead, I'm going to just ask--did you really think I brought the entire collective spectrum of my own existence here just so we could have a fist-fight?"

One by one, the streaks of color that are each a Superman moving at super-speed freezes in place: it's the visual equivalent of a sonic boom: an 'optic boom' generated as they reach the speed of light.

"This many beings moving at luminal velocity, generating this much power in one spot. It's going to drill a hole right through the fabric of space and time."

Beneath us, the ground begins to swirl and crack, before giving away to a bottomless void: the very literal nothing that exists outside the Multiverse.

"Reality has rejected you, Darkseid.....and I'm going to throw you out the door."

"And I'm going to make sure you never come back."

Orion. The Dog of War. The prodigal son of Darkseid, the one prophesied to slay him in battle, and a good friend of mine. Apparently Darkseid wasn't able to keep the other beings of the Fourth World from coming back.

"You knew it was always going to come to this, father. In the end, it was always going to be you and me. Superman just put it all together."

"Orion," I say, placing my hand on his shoulder, "You know if you go through this portal, you can't ever come back. You'll end up existing outside of existence, and once this door is closed, it can't be opened again. You don't have to do this."

Orion looks at Darkseid, then looks back at me and smiles.

"Mortal men have the ability to choose their fate. Gods do not."

With that, he charges toward his father, and they both go tumbling into the void.

With that, the vortex begins to collapse on itself, the other Supermen blinking out of this universe and back into their own. I've still got the power of the Source to patch things up, to keep the vortex from growing unstable and swallowing the rest of the universe with it.

I fly into the heart of the storm itself, spinning the opposite way to counteract it. But it's no use. I feel myself being pulled into the void as well.

Then there's a golden light.......

.......and I can see everything. All of time, all of space, all of possibility and probability laid out before me. And not only can I see it....I can reach out and touch it.

I am one with the Source.

"My God," I say to myself. "It's incredible."

Here and now, I've got it within my power to undo the damage done by Darkseid. But I can go so much further than that. I can alter the course of history and of the future in any way I want. I could prevent wars, stop extinctions.....save entire planets from destruction....

Everything, from the rise and fall of massive intergalactic nations, right down to the DNA structure of a single person in a single spot in time, can be altered if I want it.

With all of this power concentrated on me.....

Harley span round, watching as the skies above her opened up to the brand new world. Her vision was still recovering from the powerful white blast, but her pink eyes managed to catch sight of Selina Kyle. Her body lay limply on the floor, a heavy wound in her stomach, a pool of blood surrounding her. Her darkened skin and black outfit had gone, it was now just Selina Kyle, dressed in a black sweater and jeans. Harley then turned her attention to Katherine Kane, who slowly transformed back in to the Batwoman we all know. Harley slightly flicked her wrists, causing the crystal case to burst and release the unconcious Batwoman from the capsule.

Arisia was helping the others recovering the street, which left Harley time to scan the area some more. Lana Lang's solid metal skin shredded in to peices, revealing the once beautiful redhead she was. The female was helped by Arisia, finally getting up on her feet.

Far across the other side of the road, lay Stephanie Brown. The poor young girl lay in a coma, wounded by the damages Harley had done. Then, her attention finally caught Holly Robinson, one of her best friends. The road had cracked all around where she had landed, Holly releasing a few groans and moans.

CRRAAAACCK

Slowly, peice by peice, the road started to collapse around her. Harley took no time to waste, jetting low the grounds. "Holly! Hang on!"

As the ground gave way, she yanked her wrist, pulling her friend over her shoulder and soaring up in to the sky. Thinking fast and quick, Harley blasted a flat platform over the collapsing ground, creating a stable path to walk on. She finally lowered back down to the platform, laying Holly down and waiting for her to truly recover.

"Selina Kyle needs medical attention. She has been stabbed severly, and will need a Hysterectomy."

Arisia's calming voice soothed Harley's ears. Harley turned around slowly, staring down at her glowing ring. "I shall take her. Attend to the rest of them."

"Agreed," I say as I send another exploding batarang into the air and strike a parademon in the head.
