The Writer's thread (Authors, Screenwriters, playwrights, etc.)) - Part 1

So this thread died. :p

Anyone ever tried using Fiverr for any type of promotion? I'm trying a few different ones right now.

I'm still slowly... very slowly... chugging along on the editing of my eBook.

Not much else to discuss at the moment. :csad:

I just don't know what I'm going to do... which is weird to explain.

When you get in the mood, writing is crazy fast. Editing is not.

I've taken time off editing (Too much really) to work on various other bits in the same universe of my main series because I hate editing so much.

ive written a couple things in my head, but never put anything down. i should

Writing is fun and happens like magic. Editing is like a bloody day job and takes years!

I've only used fiverr to get artwork for my book done. One really good experience, and one not so much.

I find that I have trouble sticking with one idea for long. Any advise for getting more focused to a single story?

I'm losing my mind...

When I'm in story mode, I get into editing...

When I get into editing mode, I go into story... I can't stay focused on the task I've chosen.

The story itself is on a document, finally, it's just adding/trimming/changing things... storywise, and editing...

I'm totally lost on what to do as far as the book cover... I remember what I said earlier, and, probably not as far as myself doing it...

I just finished an outline for a short story (2-3 pages max) of my main character of my book series attending what is basically a Halloween Mardi Gras with his GF and it's presided over by an Irish trickster spirit that casts illusions.

I included the backstory about it being in Ireland for centuries and needing fear to survive so it scared people but grew weak due to the religion changes over the centuries. It accidentally killed some old folks in the Eighties and a Super team was sent to find out what killed them. They find it and eventually one of them convinces it to come back to America where it later started doing massive events on Halloween with illusions of monsters and such as it goes down the street.

The crowd can get in on it too as the spirits illusions ca be affected by strong wills. If it sends a swarm of spiders at you, imagine them wearing clown shoes and watch them trip over each other. If it sends a fire breathing giant, imagine it deflating like those inflatable waving arm guys at the car dealerships.

I got the idea while listening to this.

If my health issues get in the way, I'll go the stock image route, buy the rights to use an image or images, and edit to my content.

This looks like the route I'll be taking, I found an image I'd like to use... and so on, and so on.

ETA:
I'll just update this one instead of posting... does anyone use any type of editing/grammar apps or software for their works? I've been trying Grammarly and it seems fairly accurate so far. Some things are more of preference... and some things... I have one character speaking Spanish, a few others speaking Korean lingo, and another speaking text, emoji, and gamer speak which it loves to flag as errors.

For another set of fresh eyes, what do you guys do? That's the one thing I don't have.

And the image I found, I think it's a good image to represent the antagonist of the piece.

So... finally on the last couple chapters... as far as the character, story, etc. revisions have gone. The only thing right now that will be completely new is what was the Tag from my script into the eBook, which I'll get to next week.

And then it's into the eternity that will be the editing... how long do you guys try to take for the editing?

I think I'm happy with how everything has turned out.

I have some good writing news to share. I got hired on to do a top-to-bottom rewrite of a feature length script that's going into production in August. I don't have a ton of time to get the script polished and ready to rock, but I like a challenge and finally getting paid to write feels amazing.

Congrats, Matt! Good luck! Experience of the lifetime to me.

The story itself, from script to document. I finished last week.

Today, I spent hyperlinking my Table of Contents and a few links to my site and social media in my about me section.

For the next month, I'll spend editing for grammar, typos, and such... while also designing the book cover and then from there...

I don't know, I'd still like to find another editor, another set of eyes to take a glance before I release... not for content, mostly for grammar and typos...

You have to commit 100%. When I run into a scenario where I am losing interest, I have to remember why I was passionate about that project in the first place and find that spark to keep going.

Awesome, well done mate!!

I just finished the first draft of a 'short' story based in the universe I'm doing my book series in. It's about fifty pages in the Word document and it's all about the supervillain father of the protagonist of my books. It starts when he's 15 and just developing his powers up until near the end where we first meet him at the second book.

It details his life growing up, his descent into villainy, meeting his wife, raising their son together and all the **** that happens after that.

I wrote my first novel and it was released in 2016. I was planning to write the sequel and release it last year but my Parents healthy declined and I had to move them 3 times in one year and then my mom passed in November. I am working out the details but I just need to sit down and write the next book. It was meant to be a trilogy but I need to get moving or I will never finish them.

The only thing setting me back is my own issues, I guess. I'm still going along with my schedule, but in the back of my head, I feel like I'm sabotaging myself.

I love, and I'm proud of my story, but will anyone else? That's what I keep telling myself.

I'm also re-editing my first book released back in 2016 and will upload it to new distributors.

I think being a best selling author would be a great career, and I also think that everybody should write at least 1 novel in their lives (a la Bilbo Baggins).

My process when writing is to begin with the title, and I suppose I have the same problems as Hellion. I am such a dysfunctional person that I do not really devote to much time to one thing if it requires a lot of effort.

Hello all, My name is Matthew, I'm new here. I am an aspiring author currently working on a novel that is set in a world where people started to develop super powers/special abilities. I came to these forums to find some inspiration on super heroes from the forums and suggestions of other books/comics/movies that people have enjoyed. So let men now if you have any good suggestions!

Quick morality question: I'm writing a short story (2-3 pages) about a guy being hired to speak to an accused murderer currently being held by the police. The guy (Mike) shows up and proceeds to speak to the killer about the murders he's accused of committing and while the guy never comes out and says he did them, he's doing everything but saying it due to his mannerisms, way of talking and how smug he is about the lack of solid evidence. The cops have almost enough to make charges stick but not quite enough as the killer had been careful.

So it leads to Mike eventually telling the guy that he isn't with the cops and he's been brought in on the case by one of the parents of the murder victims. He was just there to assess guilt and let the parent know if he was guilty or not. From how the guy acted and did everything but confess, Mike is sure it's him when used in conjunction with the evidence already against him.

After verifying it all and making sure that the guy was the killer, he opens the door and in enters the parent who is a supervillain. The parent has no use for laws in general and because his daughter was murdered (among several others) he wanted to kill the guy because the media said he might not be charged due to lack of evidence. The cops were all knocked out thanks to gas in the ventilation system of the precinct so they can't help anyone. Mike leaves the two of them alone in the interrogation room and does his best to ignore the screaming.

So the question is: Since the guy was guilty of multiple murders, felt no remorse about it and was potentially going to get off without punishment, was Mike in the right to help someone take revenge on him? I'm not asking in the legal sense since I'm pretty sure there's several felonies just in Mike getting in to talk to the guy.

It's a short story based in the same universe my books are in and I'm writing them to get a better idea of how the main character would deal with certain issues as he's a supervillain consultant but still not a 'bad guy' in the Doctor Doom/Darkseid sense. He's more like the Punisher as he has a certain ruthlessness and is willing to break all kinds of rules/laws if they don't suit him as long as it lets him work towards his end goals.

Also, hi Matt.

I found that hiring a professional editor made my story much better. I would say concentrate on writing and then find someone you trust to handle the editing. I noticed that you indicated that you were doing both at the same time and I found that bogged me down. For your consideration.
