The X-men POWERS Discussion Thread

It was not necessary, she was there for an emotional battle with the cure, not the pysical one with mags.
But she wasn't even on the battle with the cure. She simply took it. There was no struggle, no conflict. If at least she had an important part on the emotional core of the movie, I'd be happy. But that didn't happen. She was missing during 3/4 of the entire picture. And the scenes she got were for the most part rubbish, which once again, shows the lazy writing job.

And she could be used, greatly, on the final battle. Especially seeing how many random mutants she could absorb. And ,just in case, the "how will she touch the enemy?" talk is old... Rogue has spent years at the school. It's not a stretch to think she can handle a little hand-to-hand combat. It would not be out of character to see her punch a mutant and taking his powers.

But then we get into the whole "Anna wasn't available" talk. And I say: she was never a part of the final battle, as Zak said, in any of the scripts, even before Margaret appeared. Which shows they never intended her to go to the final battle...

Well put, flavio.

Though on the other end, I think Beast was portrayed very well - loved the introduction, hints to his past as a former student, the only thing they could have made tighter (besides his old uniform :p) was his relationship with Storm, and the affect the cure had on him. One scene, and his whole view seemed to dissolve out of the film, and nothing else was mentioned of it.

Yeah, I loved Beast. I think his relationship with Storm was well made. I always thought he should be Storm's best friend, and hoped he could bring a little more for her...Kelsey Grammer did an awesome job as an entirely controversial figure (I know we had this before with Nightcralwer, but maybe because of this, I thought it would be harder to achieve the same complexity level on Beast. To me, it was one of the good points of the movie.)

In terms of the best power displays I think the best of the trilogy were Magneto's escape from his plastic prison in X2 aswell as his convoy interception in X3, Nightcrawler's Whitehouse attack in X2, Dark Phoenix vs. Xavier in X3, Storm's tornado gauntlet in X2, Jean/Phoenix holding back the wall of water in Alkali in X2 and Cyclops vs. Jean in X2.

Nice Rogue discussion. Agreed with Flavio in his points. She definetly was wasted. And she isn't just an emotional character. Rogue is a x-men since X2, like some have said, so as a member of the team, she become in an action character too, because he is a character from the comics, about a group of mutants with powers, named X-men, so in X3, she should have had her active part in the action, because is the third film of a franchise and she hadn't had a good part in the action before.

And apart from that, what do you think about my last post? I saw none commented anything about it. I was talking about the lack of a few conversations about the use of the powers, and how they feel with them.

Eventually, I would have liked to have seen more from Rogue (well, all of the X-Men really... but I understand that is costly).

The only power display I was ever really disappointed with is Phoenix/Dark Phoenix. :csad: :cmad:

It was different to what we thought we'd get but I think the end result was pretty cool visually and it fit in with the realistic tone of the trilogy. At the end of the day Jean/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix has telekenetic powers so the strength/upgrade of her telekenetic ability was demonstrated nicely in X3.

I admit it would have been nice to have seen the firebird at least once in the movie, when she rose from Alkali Lake being the most obvious opportunity.

I just would have liked to have seen anything readily identifiable with Phoenix. Other than that, I can't complain too much about power usage.

I agree with those. Except I liked virtually all of Magneto's power displays. And I loved Storm's electrical fury after rising from the elevator shaft in X1, and her power displays in X3. Only Storm moment I am not that keen on is the arctic windstorm inside Cerebro in X2, which somehow doesn't work for me. They never explain why she is immune to Jason's mind control (because he is concentrating in Xavier? because she has the same immunity to mental attack as in the novelisation and the comics?) and the windstorm scene is a bit feeble and not very dynamic.

Weakest power display was Rogue metalling up in the Danger Room in X3. It happened too quickly... but it had to happen quickly to work against a missile... and they did it to give her a power moment for the fans.. but it failed. If they wanted a power scene, it should have been something else.

Yes, Rogue should have been the one who touchs Peter, because she is who uses her power, not the others. I almost hate that moment, not the momment, but how they did it.

It happened too quickly. But it would have to happen that quickly with a fast, unexpected attack like a missile. It only proved that she can be pretty useless in a combat situation. She needed to borrow Colossus's power earlier in that sequence, in case something happened, so she could then use it. Also, he suffered no harm at all, which didn't make sense.

Cyrusbales is right that she had an emotional role rather than an action role. I know fans wanted more action, and she wanted more action, but it wasn't easy to do it within the set-up of the story. You'd need to give someone else the emotional storyline from the beginning. Or at least change the way her powers worked.

I was truly disgusted with the lack of powers or thought behind them in the first two movies. The scene in the Statue was gross. I can't believe Singer had Logan do EVERYTHING.

It would have been a good time to see Scott pull a leadership move, or to see Jean NOT be scared, or ...I dunno see Storm be scared of uhh closed in spaces. A fight or flight response would have been nice. If not a control of different gases, plasma energy, heat or cold mastery...something besides a rain cloud or nothing at all.

Rogue actually got to use her powers as part of a tactile strategy often.

Nope, we see Logan poking at stuff, alot.

Comparing all the films there are only a few moments where I felt any justice was done for any of the characters powers: X1-Storm in the Jet, X3-Jean and Xavier, X1 Wall Freezing. It just seems like they never allowed the characters abilities to grow up. You'd think by their age and training that the battles would practically be severe and with the power-range in just Storm and Jean Grey alone any enemy will go down.

Maybe they do it so they have somewhere to go, but I think it would just be terribly hard to keep up with every aspect of every power, but it could be done.

Id like to see more done with Iceman and Storm just because their AOE would be amazing to watch from afar or to be inside a storm.

I didn't say she was handled way, her purpose in the movies is the emotional one, with acceptance and the cure etc, however in X3 it was handled terribly, like pretty much everything else. The danger room was just stupid, rogue being there was pointless, it's not a comic book, it's a film which had 3 dimensional character(before X3), not just a basic 2D action flick etc where everyone fights etc.

yes, X3 had a bit of that, specially with Colossus. He is there to fight only, that's a big mistake. We didn't hear any word about how he is, some little moment about his personality, nothing!
