Blackwashing does exist. People are just too afraid to talk about it because they're afraid that people will think that they are racist if they speak out against it.

Zendaya was never gonna be any variation of Michele Gonzales tho... Idk why people are so adamant for a black biracial to play a Latina character or any variation of that latina character that most fans don't even like...
I know right.

Emma Stone just played an Asian person. White washing is the real and by far biggest problem. Comics are lily white because of when they were created. Adding diversity is not the same as Hollywood's love affair with white washing.

In a future biopic of Emma Stone, it would be funny if she's played by an Asian person because Emma so obviously looks Asian. :oldrazz:

'Cause that's OK because she's a "smaller-tier" character but a biracial actress playing a traditionally White more mainstream character is a no-no, I guess. :nuhu: :oldrazz:

it is easier to get away with changing lesser known, lower tier characters. more so than changing major, iconic, well known characters.

that's why I'm not so bothered if they want to change up Sally or Liz.

but MJ, Gwen, or Harry? that's off limits. to me at least.

however, if you have a character named Michele Gonzalez, you kind of almost have to cast an actress of a certain ethnic type.......lol.

so, no, I wouldn't want Zendaya playing Michele Gonzalez either. I would want a Hispanic or bi-racial Hispanic to play the character.

same with people saying Zendaya playing White Tiger or whoever that character is. No, White Tiger is Hispanic. Zendaya is not.

I don't like white washing either. I'm especially pissed when they whitewash Asian characters, because I'm half-Asian and I want to see more Asians in major, leading roles.

but the answer to that shouldn't be to do it in reverse. and certainly not what they are seemingly doing in Homecoming where they are essentially "wholesale" changing the entire HS supporting cast for the sake of diversity.

I wouldn't want Peter or MJ to be Asian; and I'd be just as outraged if they did cast an Asian actress for the role of MJ.

I'd rather they develop Cindy Moon into a character so she can have her own Silk spin-off film. I'd love to see a Cassandra Cain Batgirl film.

Focus on building up ethnic heroes themselves instead of "replacing" existing characters.

as long as the Asian actress can accurately capture the spirit and essence of Emma Stone. :o

There are really only two things I care about here:

1. That she is a good actress who can play the part well.
2. The character being played is actually MJ, aka the smoking hot, ultra-desirable, hard drinking, party girl type.

Give me those two things and I'll be happy with the portrayal. If the actress is terrible or if the characterization is completely different than the traditional MJ, I won't be.

well........doesn't seem like we are getting #2. may have to wait for a "transformation" into said character first. :o

We'll see how things go. If things go south, I'll be the first one to complain about it, but until then, I think Marvel has earned the benefit of a doubt. Especially after they managed to make Ant-Man (who I never liked before the film) not suck.

We are, not every girl right away turns into a party girl at some point i mean she is only in high school. She will probably be the accurate comic version of the character once she gets to college.

Let's not forget that at this point, MJ (like Peter) would probably be a 15 year old teen. There's no way Marvel will portray a 15 year old girl as either ultra desirable or a hard drinker. LOL

At this point in time, she's still just a kid.

To me, to most important thing is getting her personality right. First and foremost, MJ needs to be an extremely fun character (a potential scene stealer), who the audience (along with Peter) can easily fall in love with.

Yeah, I feel like her look and party-girl mantra could come later if need be. I understand fans wanting it now but you don't want a 10th grade MJ being a 'bombshell', do you?

Not literally, but the same type of attitude. Something like her portrayal from the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon would be ideal. The fun, sassy, popular girl.

Even if her name is not actually Mary Jane but just her initials are MJ, which stands for Michelle Johnson or something else?

I think more people know the character as Mary Jane than simply MJ.

Would you be happy if DD didn't stand for Daredevil but something else like Dumb Dumber?

I just don't associate fun and sassy, with ultra desirable and hard drinking. LOL. Portraying a 15 year old girl as being ultra desirable seems kind of creepy.

At that point it wouldn't even be the same character anymore.

Ultra-desirable to her peers in the movie. Not to adults.

She should be the girl that all the other guys in school are after.

Which is already what Zendaya's character is seeming to be. Even if she were sassy and everything you describe but her name isn't actually Mary Jane but Michelle Johnson and she doesn't look like her, then can she be said to be the same character?

Would people say that Angelica Jones was actually Mary Jane in Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends?

I know she was modelled on Mary Jane, and she was practically her in everything but name, but do people still consider her Mary Jane or Angelica Jones/ Firestar?

Just think when Matthew Lintz was actually considered as one of the candidates for Peter Parker. He looked about 10. Just imagine what kind of MJ we would've gotten then.

Yeah, mostly because she being kept would've fixed some issues from TASM2 (but not all, obviously).

For example, Aunt May needs Peter to get her car from the shop for her work and that's the last we hear of it. With the MJ stuff, we see Peter go to retrieve it and get it but it breaks down to where he meets MJ on a motorcycle who offers him a ride due to car troubles.

She'd also meet Gwen in the film and be Peter's next door neighbor. Also, her abusive home life is touched on and Spider-Man even confronts her father, too. She worked as a waitress during the Rhino/Spidey battle and they kept one scene of her in (where her back is to the camera as she watches Rhino cause destruction from inside the coffee shop).

I wish her hair would've been redder but she could've passed as MJ. Alas.... :csad:

What if they had Michelle Gonzalez's father be Hispanic and her mother black? Or vice-a-versa?

this. SSM MJ perfectly captured the spirit and essence of the character while still being appropriate for the HS setting. She was the beautiful, playful, sassy, flirty, popular alpha girl on the show. She was classic MJ from the comics done in HS.

that's the route they should have followed in Homecoming. Instead, they apparently took inspiration from SSM Gwen, because that's the direction they seem to be taking Z's MJ ( and to an even more extreme level than SSM Gwen ).

SSM MJ is the perfect template to use for HS MJ. SSM as a whole is also the perfect template to base the new film series on.

How would people feel if Zendaya played MJ in a fat suit for most of the movie and she's the obese ugly duckling basketcase who decides to lose weight. Then when she's shed the pounds for the homecoming dance she surprises Peter and everyone else and gives the famous jackpot line.
Would people be okay with this character arc which shows her before she became the MJ everyone knew.
