Wouldn't Jason be in reference to Jason Ionello?

http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Jason_Ionello_(Earth-616)

Especially since there was another character on the list called Tiny (referencing Sean "Tiny" McKeever).

interesting.

never heard of this character before, and maybe this "Jason" character is meant as a reference, same with that other reference you mentioned.

but, as with everything else with this film, you can't really assume anything, cuz I honestly have no idea what they are planning anymore.......lol.

I can expect that if that Jason in the comics picked on Peter, then inverse Jason in Homecoming will be one of Peter's best buds. :o

So i'm readin' PBP and Knight's heart-to-heart posts and i'm just like:

cry.gif~c200

here. have a Kleenex.

Which takes away another dynamic that worked: Peter hitting on the older woman but ending up on a date with her. Now, if Peter is older than Betty, not only is it now Peter robbing the cradle so to speak but also Betty is supposed to be the gateway for Peter into the Daily Bugle. Which again, makes me fear that the Bugle will be a school newspaper or possibly online news/blog columns. :csad:

Betty is Peter's age in the 616 universe. (In a letters page, Stan actually said she was younger). She dropped out of high school and got a job at the Bugle. Most adaptations make her older because that kind of scenario isn't as likely to happen in this day and age.

I'm wondering if they'll explore a romance between Peter and Betty in this series. I don't think they will. For now, it just seems to be Liz and Michelle/MJ.

Ah ok. Good. :)

It would be nice to see Betty give more screentime and dues than she did in the Raimi films but yeah they probably want another Peter with Mary Jane or someone GA knows by name or seen in previous films. :(

I really don't care whether Betty is older or younger or same age as Peter. I care a bit more if you take her out of the Bugle crowd and place her in HS with Peter - but even that doesn't bother me in and of itself.

what I DO have a problem with if you put Betty in HS, but then make her blonde and act cliquish and snobbish and more like Sally Avril and nothing like Betty.

if you are going to use the character, but make her look and act nothing like the character, then why bother using the character in the 1st place??

Yeah, Betty needs her signature brown locks. Otherwise, might as well call her Sally or Gwen.

I posted this is the general discussion board too but it also belongs here. Zendaya has all the makings of a perfect MJ...shouldn't the writing try to exploit that?

Agree. Like I said in the other thread, if it is their intention to make Zendaya the MJ of the MCU, then I would want:

  • Her name to be Mary Jane Watson, not Michelle Johnson or whatever.
  • She becomes the alpha party girl, or however Gunn described her
  • Zendaya looks like she is capable of looking (not frumpy)
  • She gets her signature red hair

If they can pull this off, then I'll be okay with it.

Edit: sorry, I said it on this thread, but on the previous "part" of the thread. Getting confused which thread is which

This video alone definitely qualifies her as being more than suitable for the role.

She can work a runway and is pretty, yes, but her filmography let alone her acting experience isn't much and the way they have her character at the moment (whoever she really is) doesn't scream MJ to me.

IMO, Anngourie Rice would've been a perfect MJ but they cast her as Betty. So, STILL to this day, I do not understand why they couldn't have found a redheaded actress who has done a lot of work either in film, TV, or both for the part over possibly Zendaya.

can't speak to her acting, cuz I haven't seen anything she's been in, but her name was brought up frequently here as a possible candidate.

Katherine-McNamara-Hairstyles.jpg

in terms of beauty and looks alone, she would have been perfect. she also seems to have a good personality, too, based on what little I've seen of her in interviews and such.

and this is her filmography:

P.S. And remember, they cast Angourie to play Betty but make her look and act like Sally!! Yay!!

How would Rice be perfect to you? At the end of the day if the writing and portrayal they're going for with the character doesn't align with your expectations, as you've mentioned, then on principle alone there's no such actress "perfect" for MJ.

Zendaya can act imo, she's beautiful, sexy, confident and is very charismatic; qualities that make her a perfect candidate in general for the character of MJ. However, how she's written is the determining factor.

agreed. that's why this goes beyond race for me.

if they had cast a white girl ( with red hair, too ) like the actress I posted above, and they gave her the exact same style and look as Z's MJ, and the exact same personality and story arc as Z's MJ, I would be JUST AS MAD!!

and that's why when people try to make this casting "controversy" solely about race, they are missing the point. the real concerns, for me at least, are with how the character is being written in this movie. and not just this character, but the other characters as well, and indeed the movie as a whole.

the actors and actresses aren't the problem. it's the overall "vision" of the film that now has me concerned, given all of the changes they have made and the directions they seem to want to take these characters in.

Yeah I know. I've seen some of you guys losing your rag about the possible "she's all that"makeover angle the film could be going for. Time will tell I suppose.

Well, in a way they are, if they are cast in the wrong roles. Imagine if Tom Holland had been cast as Ganke or Kenny Kong. Is he a good actor? Yes. But he wouldn't have been right for the role.

Does the guy cast as Ned Leeds seem right for that role? But if he went through something as simple as a name change it would make things different.

yeah. but that's the fault of the director, casting, creative or whoever's in charge of casting.

it's not the fault of the actors or actresses themselves - that's the point I was trying to make. The actors don't cast themselves in the role. someone else casted them in the role.

If that fashion runway vid was a scene from the movie, I'd have no problem believing that is MJ.

I've only seen some clips here and there of Zendaya so I'm not the best judge of her acting ability but it really does come down to how the character is written.

Garfield is a tremendous actor imo. But due to lackluster writing and handling of the character of Peter, even Garfield couldn't save it. Not all bad but it's very divisive amongst fans--many calling him unlikeable or even unrelatable and those claims are not without merit.

Put the best actress available into the role of MJ and you'll get the same outcome if the writing sucks.

According to the Wrap, there is actually a She's All That remake in the works.

It's called Speder-Man: Homecoming. :o

But seriously, there is one apparently.
