Homecoming The Zendaya is possibly someone, maybe thread - Part 2

But the mere fact that she has to go through a transformation to become that either at the end of the movie or at some point in the trilogy is uninteresting and cliched. The pay off isn't enough, because the arc isn't wanted in the first place. It would've been better if they just made her look that way to start with.

agreed.

judging by those pics above, she is perfectly capable of pulling off the right look and sass and style for MJ, race change issue aside.

but no, we're not getting that. or we have to wait to get that. which is stupid because MJ does NOT need an MJ Begins story arc.

her transformation from ugly sarcastic gloom duckling to playful flirty alpha hot alpha party girl is NOT the transformation fans of the character want to see.

Speak for yourself. I'm not going to dismiss it entirely without seeing it first.

Some Zendaya, just because... :)

I still really hope she's Mary Jane, or even Felicia Hardy. It would be a waste if they kept her looking the way she did in the trailer, or made her a new character. Regardless, I think she is clearly the love interest for the trilogy.
I could totally get behind this take if she looked like THAT. What they seem to be doing is a reverse of what was in the comics.

and if they wanted to go for more studious Ultimate comics MJ, they could have gone for a look like this:

Here, Zendaya is more "conservative" and "unassuming" looking ( but she's still pretty ) and they still could have gone with the "shy, nerdy girl into bombshell" transformation.

so, they'd be combining elements from both Ultimate comics MJ and classic 616/SSM MJ. basically, like Gwen in SSM - nerd to hot.

I'd accept that more than the hot mess look and weirdo/outcast personality they're doing now.

even in new "lineup" picture where we see Anjourie looking a lot like Gwen and that black bar going across, Zendaya's character looks like she is looking away from the camera.

that gives off that weirdo/outcast/rebel vibe - like the girl from Breakfast Club they seem to be modeling her after.

Zendaya is not my kind of girl, but she has looks.

That's kind of "She's All That" look to me. The hot nerd. But it does work. It's a shame in the trailer she looks like she just rolled out of bed and slept her in clothes and is no fan of makeup because she doesn't look :hmr: - inducing as those glamor pics above.

I hope they don't go with Ultimate!MJ in the movies.

If you think about it, aren't 90% of the MCU love interest geeks/CEO?
Bruce Banner, Hope, Jane Foster, Pepper Pots...The love main interests need to be more fun.

The first time MJ swung with Spidey and while I think it just gonna be an easter egg in Homecoming, it makes me hope they are going to make 616!MJ in the future movies.

Well good for you. But that's not MJ.
Agreed - if this is the direction they go down, and I'd say it's very likely, well...yeah. It would be a curious creative decision and one I would not support.

Wouldn't it be wiser to wait and see how and if they're doing it before making up your mind?

Waiting to see "if" they are doing is one thing. Waiting to see "how" they are doing it is an entirely other. I wouldn't care how they are doing it at all, because there is no way involving any sort of transformation that I would find acceptable. And we already know the starting point as we've seen that from the trailers and set pics, so it's not like you could argue that maybe it won't be that drastic a transformation.

What if she's just an original character? I think that's a good possibility.

Yeah, but with all the "evidence" we've heard so far, it's all 50/50 at this point.

I just wished they would just up and tell us who she actually is because it's getting tiresome at this point.

I'm at this point where I don't really care. I like everything else that I'm seeing in this movie, and if Zendaya ending up as Mary Jane, it wouldn't ruin it for me. I wouldn't be thrilled, but I wouldn't dislike the movie or the franchise.

I never cared for Rachel in Nolan's Batman trilogy, but it never ruined it for me. I just accepted her as she was and went along with it because everything else is really great.

Well, to be fair, Rachel was a completely original character made up for the Nolan movies.

Zendaya's character is still a mystery, and if she does turn out to be a MJ and they do the you-know-what trope, a good portion of the fanbase would be incredibly disappointed, especially if everything else in Homecoming is done well.

You meant to say Michelle Watson, dude. :o

We ought to have had three Captain America movies of puny polio-stricken Steve Rogers, just waiting for the pay off of when he'd finally become Super Soldier Steve Rogers at the end of the third movie. :o

Even one whole movie like that would've been bad.

I know Rachel was an original character. But I'm just saying that Z as MJ wouldn't be a deal breaker. There are so many other things I care about in the Spider-Man series, and I might just end up liking her character anyway.

for me, it's not just about Z possibly being MJ and the direction they seem to be taking her. it's also about the seemingly wholesale changes they are making to pretty much everyone in the HS cast.

And since the HS scene will be an important part of the series this time around, that's kind of a big deal when practically NONE of the characters look or feel like the characters I want to see.

If Zendaya is indeed MJ, she looks and acts nothing like how I want MJ to be.

Tony's Flash may still be a rival/jerk to Peter, but he basically looks and acts nothing like how I want Flash to be.

If Anjourie is indeed Betty Brant, but looks like a deadringer for Gwen with the personality of Sally, then who the hell is she?

Ned is basically Ganke.

Liz feels like a substitute for Raimi's MJ.

I don't recognize any of these characters based on what I'm familiar with. Only Peter is recognizable, but there are some changes with him, too.

Maybe this is the double edge sword of adapting a well known property like Spider-Man.

Prior MCU films involved characters I only knew superficially ( and some even less than that like Guardians ). As a result, I just accepted what Marvel gave me. I didn't nitpick or criticize every detail because I was not familiar with the characters and the respective properties.

With Spider-Man, it's much different. I grew up reading Spidey in comics, playing Spidey games, watching Spidey cartoons, and seeing the Raimi films. I have familiarity and affection for the characters. So, I am way more critical when it comes to these characters.

Changes to Liz or Ned don't really bother me as much - I can accept those. Changes to Flash and MJ bother me more, with changes to MJ bothering me the most. Same if they made major changes to Gwen or Harry. These are the top tier characters in the Spidey mythos.

The problem with Homecoming is that they aren't just making small changes here and there or changing one or two characters. No, they are practically changing the entire HS cast with major changes to some characters.

^ Eh...I can agree about the other characters being different, but Liz is basically Liz. It's Raimi's MJ that subbed for Liz in the first place.

I really don't think Zendaya is Mary Jane anymore. I wouldn't mind her playing this new character Michelle, but if she's being set up to be the main love interest of the MCU Spider-man films (which I suspect she is), i'm going to be incredibly disappointed.
