Following the Checkmate/Outsiders crossover that started this month of May and end in July's #49, Batman will return to his team of The Outsiders in August. His goal? To reinvent the group that has been on the fringe of the DC Universe.

Revealed in Wizard Entertainment Magazine that hit story today (5/9/07), a weekly series of Outsiders one-shots will shape the new team's identity as some will stick with the retooling, and others won't. This also means that those who leave will leave room for heavier hitters.

Judd Winick (who has been on the book for a long time), penciler Matthew Clark and inker Art Thibert will roll out the changes.

"After One Year Later, Batman had far too much going on to lead a team. So we figured that over the course of this year, the story that we've been telling in Outsiders have been building to Batman coming back" said Winick.

Batman does have ideas to keep a squad in shape:

NUMBER ONE: HAVE A GOOD WINGMAN
"It'll be the first long-term reunion of Batman & Nightwing. For a long time, the two have been constantly at odds with one another. I'd like to resolve that a bit. They make a terrific team and they're better together." Winick reveals.

Because Batman is such a sour-pussed taskmaster, part of Dick Grayson's job will be to smooth over his bedside manner.

"Nightwing acts as a good conduit between Batman and the rest of the team. Batman tells you one thing and Nightwing is there to translate. Batman's in the head of the office, Nightwing's the VP who takes care of business. It's going to make for a very interesting dynamic."

NUMBER TWO: BRING IN THE HEAVY ARTILLERY
Some current members of the Outsiders will become persona non grata in the coming overhaul. "We're going to redo the lineup, which we haven't done a whole lot." explains Winick. Batman to beef up the roll call in order to tackle more formidable threats. "I think he believes that they can actually ally accomplish a lot more if they push themselves a bit further, widen their scope." said Winick. So, will we see other Batman associates from a certain justice-minded team? "I'm not talking about that," Winick laughs. "Some of the original [Outsiders] members are not going to be pleased about [the shake-up]. There may be a feeling that they'll become second string. Some bigger boys and girls are going to be on the team. Our other players will feel a little sidelined."

NUMBER THREE: RECRUIT SOLDIERS
"Batman has two priorities. [He wants someone] who will get the job done, and someone who will follow orders. You can't do that, you ain't gonna suit up for the Dark Knight," Winick says about his philosophy on the new team. "He's a living weapon who deals out vengeance. He's not someone who inspires."

In other words, don't expect the Dark Knight to break out the cheerleader pom-poms and coddle the more disenfranchised team members. "He doesn't see a team of folks who need to be motivated. He sees a job to do, and they're gonna go do it. He needs them to be smart and he needs them to be tough. He doesn't tolerate fools. He wants soldiers."

NUMBER FOUR: FOCUS ON THE MISSION
With Batman on the team, the Outsiders will be devoted to what Winick calls a "major problem" stemming from Countdown. "Batman will become obsessed with it. Folks are making trouble, and he needs to find out who these people are. It's not one ongoing mission, but a series. This is one big detective story." The New Outsiders crew won't be distracted by some of the entanglements of previous incarnations, so long as Bats reigns over every move.

NUMBER FIVE: GET DOWN IN THE DIRT
"The Outsiders have to have a little bit of dirt on their hands. They plan to go and take care of the small stuff that could turn into big stuff. They deal with problems that the JLA's hands are "too big to reach,'" Winick says, referring to the exchange between Nightwing and Superman at the end of the "The Good Fight" arc is #37."Superman's hands are just too big to reach around. He can't possibly get in there [and get dirty]." While the JLA feels bound by international laws, will we see a more covert Outsiders team striking at the corrupt with their own brand of justice? It's more than possible, considering their challenges ahead.

Tim will tell whether Batman's leadership skills will be a welcome addition. "He's someone who is soberly focused and knows how to get things done so well that you can't help but want to be a part of that. You're inspired by his focus and passion," says Winick. The writer also believes the Outsiders have yet to be pushed to the limit. "The Outsiders have had some rough times. Many people felt that had gone too far, but Batman doesn't believe they're gone too far."

Yay, the darkening and utterly jerkifying of Batman has started once more. Wasn't the whole friggin' point of OYL and Crisis and 52 to step away from these kinds of developments.

Luckily, I dropped Outsiders a few weeks back and I won't be coming back till Winick's off it.

so Outsiders must be expereinceing Low sales, because thats the only reason they need to *****fy Nightwing, and bring Batman back in [who you would think would be busy with the League, and portectign Gotham].

Aww man, I guess I'm the only person who thinks this is awesome...

I don't get Batman leading a team. His mission is Gotham. Helping out on occasion with the League or Outsiders makes more sense to me. Or Bats comes in, shakes up the lineup and gets them going in the right direction, then leaves it to Nightwing.

I could get into it.

It would be better in Batman played a role that Norman Osborne does in Thunderbolts than going out there actually on the field.

I think it's a bad idea and will only hurt the character of Nightwing. I kinda wish they had killed him during IC now.

They should kill Dick at the end of Countdown and bring Conner back. That would kick at least 17 and a half kinds of ass.

Im not sure, Dick is a classic golden/silver-age character, while Conner is a 90s so called "Dark age" Bryne superman era character. They could of killed Dick in IC, but decided to off conner instead, it comes down to I guess silver age classics, over "Bryne era Junk". Since the DC creative staff loves the silver-age, I don't see them bringing back a 90s character to soon.

No more dead Batman sidekicks. :down (unless it's killing Jason again, that's fine :o )

Just write good stories.

No, it has to be done. Dick needs to die.

I thought Dick grew... into his own character. I'm iffy about this. Very iffy.

They should've killed Dick in IC. He's been utter **** ever since.

Fortunately, they came to their senses. Not everyone in the world is happy and smiley all the time. I'm still getting over his saying "chum" in that Nightwing Annual. The type of guy who assumes a creepy leather secret identity to fight crime for the rest of his life because of a childhood trauma...not the type of cat who's gonna run around hugging everyone and clowning around Booster Gold style. And he doesn't say "chum." Leave that to Adam West and The Tick.

Seriously, you're gonna miss the one Winick book that HASN'T dealt with AIDS? Seriously, "no one with AIDS" is the new "someone with AIDS," man.

I don't get Batman leading a team.
Do you also not get DC history? The Outsiders originated as a Batman-led team, his answer to what he saw as an ineffectually neutral Justice League. The real point of the last few years of DCU continuity has been to take super-dark Image/Marvel bull**** to its utter breakpoint, and then do a 110-degree turn, revisiting the heroes-are-heroes mindset of the Silver Age, with some Modern Age realism and drama. That's what they're doing here.

Not if his mission is Gotham. Yes, Gotham will always be most important to him, but he understands the interconnected nature of the world. If helping with a covert, under-the-table strike force will help neutralize his enemies before they get to Gotham, I imagine he can see himself working on that project.

At first I thought that was the direction they were going in, but when they refer to it as his "first long-term reunion," looks like the long haul. You can't call a few issues the "first long-term reunion." Because they've hung out for a few issues before (Cataclysm, War Games, etc.)

Everything doesn't have to be happy and smiley. The whole thing was about finding balance. He doesn't have to be the paranoid enormous jerk anymore. The constant darkifying of that part of Bats is what ruined him for most of the last few years. He doesn't have to go around hugging people left and right, but he should be a little more open. The use of "chum" was just a nice homage to that period, nothing more.

He was utter **** before. You know why? A consistent string of writers that don't know how to write him. The initial Dixon run was amazing. Dick doesn't need to die just because his title sucks. How many top tier characters at DC had books that were utter crap at some point or another? Pretty much all of them.

The Dream Team:
1. The Question
2. Booster Gold
3. Dial H for Hero
4. Starman (Jack Knight)
5. Blue Beetle
6. Guy Gardner
7. Ambush Bug
