Thor 4: What Taika Waititi Needs To Do Differently To Ragnarok

Even though i'm a massive Ragnarok fan, i do agree there's plenty of margin for improvement because Ragnarok isn't a perfect movie and there's plenty of margin for improvement. I do agree with some of the points they make in the article. I also think Taika Waititi has learned quite a lot since by working in Ragnarok. Big budget movies aren't easy tasks. He now has acquired experience and important knowledge that will likely help him to deliver an ever better product with T4.

Now looking at some points made in the article:

- TAIKA WAITITI NEEDS TO BRING EMOTION TO THOR 4
I do agree that TW dropped the ball in this area. Ragnarok missed a bit of poignancy, the focus on the comedy over shined the emotional beats which is a shame because that's a balance that TW normally delivers. In this respect i hope T4 is more of an improvement, give the story real pathos, let those moments breathe and sink in.

- DON'T LET THE COMEDY OVERWHELM THOR 4'S STORY
I loved most of the comedy in Ragnarok but i do agree that there needs to be a balance. And the humor should be organically woven into the story of the movie. Focus on developing an interesting, fun and engaging story and the pepper it with humor throughout.

THOR 4 HAS TO BUILD ON PAST MCU MOVIES (& FIT THE FUTURE)
Ragnarok is the base for where Thor is now in his journey. That has to be taken into consideration, so has the events from IW and AEG... There needs to be a smooth transition and not an abrupt departure from established material. It's one way of smartly using the layers of Thor's arc and history to further boost his journey with a sense of depth and purpose, something that isn't achieved when things/ideas are constantly discarded... A solid through line works in favor of the story and character.

I'm very happy that TW is also writing T4. He will then have a better and stronger grasp on what the story should be about, the emotional beats, arcs... TW now has also the advantage of picking it up with his established version of Thor after Ragnarok, IW and AEG. Last but not least if i was Marvel and Taika i would actually ask to have Jason Aaron as a collaborator on T4 because he knows his Thor stuff and could really be a very strong addition to the team.
For my money, Ragnarok is one of, if not the most genuinely emotional films in all the MCU. Thor's talk with Odin during his battle with Hela is pure.

Definitely excited for a Thor 4. But confused as well.
So we're having a story with Thor, Valkyrie and Jane Foster Thor? I want more Thor, not necessarily JFT... I could be persuaded depending on the story and angle but i'm curious to see what the plan is. I saw some mention of Jason Aaron which made me happy and excited though.

Well certainly wasn't expecting this! Or Portman to ever return! I'm excited.

Definitely some massive news.
I'm guessing some of the movie will happen on Earth because Valkyrie and Jane Foster but then Thor is flying with the Guardians... So does he eventually come back? Or we'll have 2 parallel stories somewhat like in Ragnarok... that eventually merge into one.

Taika Waititi will return to direct Thor 4 aka Thor: Love and Thunder
During Marvel’s Cinematic Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Taika Waititi took the stage to announce that Thor 4 will officially be called, Thor: Love and Thunder. He was joined on-stage by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. When talking about her character Valkyrie’s role as ruler of New Asgard in the film, Thompson said, “first she needs to find her queen.”

Waititi explained that he’s pulling from a comics storyline called The Mighty Thor, written by Jason Aaron, for the film’s story. “It introduces a female Thor for the first time,” Waititi said, before bringing out Natalie Portman, who’s been absent from the Thor series since the second movie outside of her brief re-appearance in Endgame. Portman took the stage with the rest of the Love and Thunder cast with Mjolnir in hand.

The reaction to this news is surprisingly calm - I love it! Give me Valkyrie and Jane Foster as a power couple, and I’m good to go!!! Tessa announced onstage that Valkyrie needs a Queen to rule alongside her in this new film.

Natalie Portman Will Play Female Thor in ‘Thor Love and Thunder’ – Deadline
Valkyrie will be “re-investing in her people” and rebuilding Asgard said Thompson. “The love I feel for him is thunder,” said Thompson.

Waititi was reading one story line by Jason Aron called The Mighty Thor which is what the fourthquel will be based on. “That story line is incredible is full emotion, love and thunder and introduces for the first time female Thor,” said Waititi. Thompson and Hemsworth haven’t seen the script yet.

What’s happened to Thor posts Endgame? “He’s heading to the 7-11 for a little Netflix subscription and at this point he might be on the couch, who knows,” said Hemsworth.

I really, *really* hope Waitit knows what he's doing. Because more Natalie Portman is *not* what I would otherwise expect to be a good thing for the franchise. She's hated being a part of it. Either he's got the magic touch to mend fences and inspire her to do her A game, or else Jane is going to be a giant lead weight around the neck of this movie.

Just by reading some of Taika words i think i can already see where this might be going with Jane Foster.
The whole emotion, love and thunder... Well if this is the route then its truly a touching idea.

Wow, Thor s just a complete joke right now. I guess there are no plans to ever make him King of Asgard again.

So Vision, Cap, and now Jane can lift Thor's old hammer.

It's such a shame that he was not killed off in EG since it would have spared him of this fate.

And given how weird Taika can be, I hope he doesnt do stupid things like showing orgies or going full deadpool when it comes to raunchy scenes in this since you can bet that a lit of parent wont take their kids to watch that in theaters.

Couldnt they have made this film without bringing back Chris? I mean it's pretty clear that Jane-Thor and Valkerie will be the real leads. Why bring back Chris only to further tarnish his character?

I think Natalie Portman is happy to jump back on board because of Taika. And he can really pull out the best in her with likely a more dramatic and badass angle to the portrayal of Jane Foster.

And by the way Jane Foster Thor eventually dies in the comic.

Also the movie that precedes Thor: L&T is Doctor Strange 2.
So i'm guessing there's going to be some sort of lead up from one movie to the other.

So for Thor: L&T we have confirmed, Thor, Valkyrie, Jane Foster... I'm guessing Korg and Miek too. And then taking into account the rumors and the comic itself we could be getting BRB since everyone is basically clamoring for it, Mangog who's story became connected in a big way with Jane Foster Thor...

Wouldnt be surprised if she got hooked again after seeing Ragnarok since that did breathe some new life in the franchise (back then at least).

I doubt that she will die here like in the comics.

If anything, she may become Thor's new replacement in the MCU. Hell, people always joked about it but she may even go bi and become Valkeries new queen of Asgard.

At this point, nothing is off the table. Well making a good film with Chris Thor at the forefront is but everything else isnt.lol

IMO female Thor is the only way to continue the franchise, I thought Chris would continue the role but he may not want to do it full time. Not sure Portman would want to either. Hoping for the best since Taika did well in Thor 3. I hope we get some Beta Ray Bill.

Honestly, Jane was never a compelling or super popular character from the start so I have no idea on why they even bothered to bring her back. Beta Ray Bill and Balder should have been introduced instead of bringing her back as the new Thor.

This would have been the ideal time to bring back sif and establish her as the true leading lady in Thor's life. I don't get on how DC is capable of properly portraying Mera's importance and role in Aquaman's life but Marvel can't do the same with Sif.

If Jaimie Alexander isn't available to reprise the character then recast her.

As disappointed as I was with Thor's portrayal in EG, I had some small hope that he would be redeemed in his fourth outing. Clearly, that won't be the case since I feel like this film will be the Marvel equivalent of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" meets "Supergirl".

I don't expect anything else than CH continuing as Thor for years to come.
At least that's my wish for the character. I see this Jane Foster angle as a poignant story to be told but i don't really want to see Thor gone and i don't think he will be either.

The title basically spells the it... At least in my eyes. At it's core it's probably a love story.

I wasn't happy with how Thor was handled in Endgame, particularly the epilogue. Valkyrie being appointed queen was, frankly, absurd. Thor abdicating the responsibility of looking after his people to go clowning around with the GotG was a bad twist to the character.

I'm hoping Taika doesn't jump the shark here by stripping Thor of his powers and giving them to Jane.

But do people really want to see Chris reprise his role as Thor for several more years if he's only going to be portrayed as a lesser version of the actual character and where he's presented as more of a joke?

If EG is only a taste of what we can expect to see out of his character for the entire next phase of the MCU then I would rather not see him at all. I don't need to see him portrayed as a useless fat joke just so that they can make Jane-Thor and Valkerie look like bigger badasses.

And seeing as how they can't really milk anything more out of the Thor and Jane romance and how Valkerie isn't into Thor, then the only potential leading love story that's left is one between Jane and Valkerie.
